How the Petrochemical Industry addressed lighting in their new 2018 standards Dr Steve Lerman MD, MPH, FACOEM formerly ExxonMobil Medicine and Occupational Health Department Chairman of API ANSI Committee on RP755 Fatigue Risk Management Standards © 2018 CIRCADIAN Light
RP-755 Background • Developed in response a CSB recommendation after BP TX City’s 2005 incident • CSB concluded that worker fatigue likely played a role in the incident • Urged the API & USW to develop an ANSI standard to “to develop fatigue prevention guidelines that would, at a minimum, limit hours and days of work and address shift work” • API convened a committee, following ANSI Guidelines • Members included representatives from refining & chemical industries, the USW and experts in the area of fatigue management • RP-755; the first industry standard to utilize a comprehensive Fatigue Risk Management System (FRMS) approach was issued in 2010 © 2018 CIRCADIAN Light
Lighting in RP-755 • Called for the use of bright light to enhance alertness, using indirect lighting to minimize glare • IARC had recently issued a monograph calling shiftwork a “probable carcinogen” due to circadian disruption • Balancing this recent statement against the known risks of fatigue and the known alertness benefits of lighting, this recommendation was retained © 2018 CIRCADIAN Light
Lighting in RP-755 • Since then: • The connection between circadian disruption has been strengthened • Technology can now offer the fatigue-related benefits of bright light while minimizing circadian disruption • As a result, the second edition of RP-755, to be issued by YE 2018 will include: • “… light sources at night should be selected to minimize circadian system disruption” • RP-755 will be the first standard addressing the issue of circadian disruption due to work at night © 2018 CIRCADIAN Light

Accelerated ROI when Lights are for people, not buildings! FALSE LED ECONOMY Lumens per watt can reduce costs from 0.8% to 0.2% but at enormous productivity & health cost. Human Costs of Conventional Blue-Rich Energy Efficient LEDs far exceed any energy savings during evenings or nights $$ Chart from Economics of Biophilia © 2018 Circadian ZircLight Inc.
True & Fake circadian: Buyer Beware “Merely adjusting CCT, light intensity, or even SPD with time of day does not qualify a lighting system as “circadian” CCT color tuning products …should not be labelled “circadian” unless they have been demonstrated through properly designed clinical trials to be capable of optimizing the phase, amplitude and/or entrainment of the circadian system to promote human health and wellbeing.” Feb 2018: Illumination Engineering Society (IES) and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute LESA Workshop Report on Lighting Systems for Healthcare Environments © 2018 CIRCADIAN Light
Requirements for True Circadian Light • Prevent circadian disruption and health consequences • Removal of 440-490nm blue light at night • Providing blue-rich 440-490nm light during day • Sustain human alertness and performance • Provide sufficient illumination levels for work • Deliver white light with good color rendering © 2018 CIRCADIAN Light

Conclusion • Traditional lighting negatively impacts health, well-being and performance • Too little blue-rich light during the day • Too much blue-rich light at night • The solution is here today • Dynamic circadian lighting that provides high blue-content during the day and less than 2% blue-content at night • Adopted by over a dozen 24/7 operations and Fortune 500 companies • Circadian lighting provides your workforce with: • Improved performance: reduced fatigue, reduction in errors • Improved health: Decreased obesity (BMI), reduced diabetes risk • Avoid future liability risk of conventional lighting © 2018 CIRCADIAN Light
