Logistics without Borders Barcelona Malmö (Spain) (Sweden) Pniewy Swindon (Poland) (UK) European network The European network of Honda Motor Europe Logistics includes 6 foreign branches that are centrally coordinated and managed from Ghent. The branches were set up to optimise the integration of the parts business in Europe, but nowadays include several Honda logistics operations. Organisationally the branches are identical. Yet each HMEL has its own specialisation and responsibility, HMEL-UK mainly fulfils a procurement function. The Honda philosophy is one of glocalization. Honda has, in other words, chosen, from a global approach, to manufacture close to the sales market and to integrate maximally in the local culture. The beginning of 2014 marked the creation of HMEL: Honda Europe in Ghent, Verona Vienna Honda Belgium Factory in Aalst and the 6 foreign branches have been amalgamated to (Italy) (Austria) become the new Honda Motor Europe Logistics NV. HMEL Car Logistics Car Logistics The first thing you notice when visiting Honda Motor Europe Logistics is the huge car park. With a surface area of 450,000 m2 and a storage capacity of 17,000 cars, you simply cannot ignore it. Cars are delivered to Ghent by ship from the factories in Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States. Truck and train to Ghent bring cars from the United Kingdom. Cars from the United States are disembarked in Zeebrugge and transported by truck to Ghent. In Honda Motor Europe Logistics they undergo an intensive ‘pre-delivery inspection’ (PDI) and the desired options are also fitted. Nothing is left to chance, so that only cars that meet the strictest Honda quality standards are allowed to leave the company to realise a customer’s dream. Every effort is made to ensure that the cars reach their final destination in less than three days: Germany, the Benelux, Austria, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia or Hungary. Honda is at present the second largest Japanese car manufacturer and is doing really well lying sixth in the world rankings. Beside the traditional success factors such as technology, ergonomics and design, we also want to excel in terms of safety and environment. In terms of the logistics of cars that in part is reflected in the maximum use of recyclable protective material for transportation. HMEL Motorcycles First of all Dreams Motorcycles, the boy’s dream of many. From 50 to 1,800 cc, built in Japan, the US, Italy, China, India and Thailand: more than 30,000 units find their way to Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany and Austria. Honda is and remains the undeniable number one when it comes to motorcycles. Besides import and storage in the large, almost 14,000 m2 warehouse, a lot of attention is paid to the management of the logistics process. Strict quality control and the search to restrict the logistical damage have led among other things to the introduction of ‘returnable crates’. Thanks to this reusable packaging the motorcycles are now protected and cost less to transport to their destination. But also the delivery deadline is also gaining in importance. Therefore environment and safety do not solely influence the manner of designing and manufacturing, but also leave their mark on the logistics process. Honda offers the complete range: lawnmowers, ride-on mowers, strimmers, tillers, cultivators, generators,… The distribution of all Power Equipment is centralised in Ghent, where there is 14,500 m2 of warehousing. No fewer than 220,000 units find a new owner. Honda is thus the standard in this market segment. Marine The much desired Honda ‘outboard engines’ come directly from Japan. Honda supplies the world’s largest assortment of four-stroke outboard engines, with a power rating from 2 to 250 hp. This fine specimen of pure power occupies a niche in the market but is still good for almost 2,500 m2 in warehousing. More than 14,000 demanding customers all over Europe annually decide to buy a Honda outboard engine. HMEL European Engines Center Industrial Engines Honda’s industrial engines were first offered to Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) halfway through the 1990s. Since then there has been a steady increase. For this too, the decision was made to have a central sales organisation close to the sales market and with direct communications to Honda Research & Development in Japan. There are many advantages: a close partnership between Honda and its clients ensured a better focus on the needs of the market and in addition allowed us a wider perspective on ‘the market behind the market’, i.e. the needs of the European customer. While the far-reaching service has guaranteed the functionality and environmental-friendliness of our products, our associates have constantly paid attention to managing the delivery times, safety and correctness. Factors that make the difference for our industrial partners and for Honda. Honda’s engines are built into numerous products in sectors such as: Engines • Industry & construction • Agriculture & horticulture • Generators & welding equipment • Lawn & garden • Entertainment sector (karting) 20 21
