SPECIAL | FIREFIGHTING FIREFIGHTING | SPECIAL F ire – it has ever been fascinating, lively and agile, destructive and still irreplaceable. An absolute danger once out of control. And to prevent the fire from getting out of control we had again a basic training in firefighting at out headoffice in Hamburg. BASIC-TRAINING – The aim was to learn how to act in case of an emergency and how to handle the common firefighting equipment. Everybody surely knows that a fire-extinguisher is helpful, but do you really know how to handle it or have you ever used it? Not me and as such it was a very interesting training. FIREFIGHTING Guided by a professional firefighter and teacher for safety trainings we all started in a group of about 18 persons at 9.30 o’clock with a powerpoint presentation showing the danger of fire, the different causes of fire and how deal with them. And don’t forget the necessity of emergency exits, they always have to be kept easy accessible! After a short break we walked outside to start with the practical parts. It was demonstrated how to react if your waste basket is on fire, if the fuse box is ablaze or – the most dangerous situation at home – if your pots or pans look alike a bonfire. DO NOT ADD WATER!!! Trying to kill the flames of boiling oil with simple water will end in a 3 meter darting flame and hell lot of trouble. Better use a class F extinguisher which is suitable for large burning oils risks which are often found in kitchens in the form of deep fat fryers, frying pans, etc. There are different types of fire-extinguishers available for the various kinds of fire sources and it is very good know….. THEY ALL CAN SAVE LIVES! „And it burns, burns, burns….. the ring of CI-Team fire“ or „Fire…..I’ll take you to burn“ have been very popular songs inspired by fire. 12 HOMEPORT PD 01/19 HOMEPORT PD 01/19 13
