are looking to do some things on a smaller scale,” Ward says. “They don’t want to get involved in tilling and all the maintenance to put in the big gardens as we did back in the day. So container growing has been a big hit and it is easy to do.” When starting out, choose containers based on what you intend to grow, Ward recommends. For instance, heartier, bushy plants will likely require a larger container than culinary herbs, which grow just fine in a window box or small container. Some plants play well together, whereas others can be territorial or otherwise unruly and difficult to manage. To minimize the drama, always keep your produce together and herbs together, Ward recommends. A good rule of thumb when determining how much space you will need is to allow for an area of one foot by two feet per plant with spacing that allows containers to sit comfortably one foot apart and one foot from the wall, Ward recommends. Planting in containers can also make a differ- ence in planting depth, says Sarah Hanson, County Extension Director and master gardener with the Purdue Extension office in Johnson County. When choosing a container, note that most plants need a minimum of six to eight inches to root, Hanson says. “Some containers aren’t very deep or very big, so you may not be able to grow the same crops or you can but they won’t produce as well,” Hanson says. “Some of the kits you buy are well suited for straw- berries or lettuce, but not so much for tomatoes or watermelon that need more space.” Granted, growing watermelon and squashes i in a container is not impossible, but it can create more issues than not.
