» What’s trending in ... houseplants STORY BY AMY MAY | PHOTO BY adobestock Houseplants can bring life into a home as the days get shorter and we spend more time inside. Although some people worry they can’t care for the plants, Garry Ward, owner of McCammon’s Irish Market, plant nurseries with locations in Greenwood and Brownsburg, says there are sev- eral varieties of plants that can survive even the most neglectful owner. “The main concerns I get are ‘what’s the easiest plant?’ and ‘how do I not kill it?” Ward said. “There are several varieties that do really good and are easy to care for.” Dracaena is a genus of about 40 species of succulent shrubs and trees. The main similarities are that they are solitary plants with a single stem, trunk or cane. Some of them include ficus, goldfish, ivy, liriope, philoden- dron, dragon tree and sanseveria. “There are lots of different varieties. Most of them are low-light and don’t need much water,” Ward said. Aglaonema is a family of flowering plants in the arum family. They are native to the rainforests of southeast Asia — Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia. The most common houseplant of this family, which includes 25-30 varieties, is the Chinese evergreen, another plant that is easy to care for. Ward said a lot of people like the snake plant, an attractive plant that doesn’t need much attention. It has slightly prickly edges, which could deter cats from chewing on them. Plants not only look pretty; they also have health benefits. The aloe vera plant is a popular succulent. If you get a sunburn or a minor kitchen burn, Ward said to cut a piece off, split it down the middle and apply the gel inside directly on the burn. Greener plants, like peace lilies and fiddle leaf figs are espe- cially good for cleaning the air and giving off lots of oxygen. NASA research has shown that snake plants remove toxins such as formaldehyde and benzene. Other plants, like jasmine, laven- der, peppermint, chamomile and English ivy, are also known for their calming and stress-reducing effects, making them ideal for the bedroom. “They bring a sense of tranquility to the room,” Ward said. He also suggested trying a small palm tree in the house. “They are tropical and relaxing. You can come home, sit back, have a drink and get a sense of being on vacation.” Caring for most common houseplants is easy, he said. Typi- cally, they need water once a week. Get a moisture probe, which you stick directly in the soil, Ward said. Don’t overwater, which can slowly kill the plant and create a haven for fungus gnats. “Let it get good and dry and then give it a good drink once a week, about one or two cups.” Ward also recommended gently cleaning the plant’s leaves with a damp cloth or sponge about once a month. Too much dust will block the leave’s pores. He said the best source of information is the person at your local nursery, who can recommend plants based on how comfort- able you are caring for them. 6 HOME TRENDS MAGAZINE

Some other tips from the sleep center: Be consistent Since sleep cycles are ruled by our internal clocks (known as a “circa- dian clock”), it is good practice to keep the body on a schedule by going to bed and waking at the same time each day — yes, even on weekends. Don’t smoke Like coffee, nicotine is a stimulant. Smoking before retiring for the evening can hinder the body’s ability to relax and fall asleep. In- gesting nicotine before sleep can also impair the body’s ability to get restful sleep and make it more difficult to stay asleep and wake rested and ready to greet the day.
