window dressing Blinds can » change the room STORY BY MENARDS PHOTO FROM ADOBE STOCK Installing window blinds is one of the best ways to instantly change the look and feel of a room in your home. There are several reasons to install blinds instead of other options such as curtains. Easy to take care of One of the best things about window blinds is they are really easy to take care of. Most blinds just require a damp cloth on occasion to remove the dust. cally, an interior wall is removed to open the space, allowing airflow from one room to another. Windows bedeck three of the four walls, allowing in as much light as possible. Heating and cooling is not so much of an issue as the ambient home temperature helps keep the space on an even keel. Three season rooms have windows on three sides and don’t have artificial heating and cooling. Separated from the home’s main living area by an exterior door, small space heaters or an independent unit designed for heating and cooling are frequently used to maintain a welcoming temperature. “With a three season room, you will get three seasons out of it,” says Mike Dukate, owner of Dukate Fine Remodeling Inc., in Franklin. “A sunroom, you put in all glass and can sit there on the coldest day in the winter and enjoy; then using a ceiling fan for hot summer days.” Part of the design process is to make sure the placement of the addition optimizes space as well as scenery, Gettum says. If you are planning on spending a lot of time in the new space, you may want to put it on the east side of your home so you catch the morning rays and shade in the evening. Some homeowners want as much sunlight H as possible in their sunroom. If you are of like mind, you might consider adding skylights, which are becoming increasingly popular, Gettum says. “It’s been pretty typical and is certainly an Homeowners who want more outdoor living option to be considered,” he says. “There is space but don’t want to share the space with no better time to put a sky light in a sunroom mosquitoes and pests are looking at popular as when you are building it, it’s always more three season additions and sunrooms. expensive to retrofit it later.” Jason Gettum, co-owner and vice presi- Gettum does caution homeowners that dent of Gettum Associates in Greenwood, whatever additions are made should look says right now, room additions are certainly like they have always been there, not only for popular. quality of your life, and I think that is the most important thing.” People make additions to their homes like this because they want to feel like they are outside without being outside and that is the beauty of a sunroom, he adds. Another option is an aluminum room, Dukate says, which are straight forward. There is no design to it, and pricing is done on the spot. Covered and screened-in porches are another option. Like room additions, these enclosed spaces keep out mosquitoes. Ceiling fans are handy for covered porches as they not only offer airflow, but also help usher stray mosquitoes away, says Ron Rose, owner at Indiana Reality Pros in Greenwood. “If the porch is facing the right direction and the evening sun has already gone overhead, you have a nice place to enjoy the outdoors,” Rose says. If you are considering adding a new space, it’s important to get multiple bids from experienced professionals. Gettum encourages homeowners to seek input from multiple contractors, but says if there is a huge discrepancy in the bids, you had better ask why. Also, be leery of bid prices that are based solely on square footage. That approach does not work in remodeling, he says. “I would use square footage pricing for budget purposes only,” Gettum says. “It is not an accurate way of pricing a project.” So is the cost worth the time and payoff even if you may be selling your home in the near future? The short answer is yes. Sunrooms and three season rooms offer additional square footage for the home, Rose says. And, right now, the home buying market is struggling with inventory, he adds. “There is nothing to buy right now,” Rose says. “Being picky is not the buyers out there right now. People are focused on their needs list right now.” Those who opt for an addition should antici- pate some upkeep, Dukate says. There is no such thing as “no maintenance.” If you opt for an aluminum addition, there should be nothing to paint. However, periodic inspections are a good thing. Additions that are built onto the existing struc- ture that have siding, soffits and the like will have to be painted every so often, Dukate says. He said his clients are usually happy with their choice to expand their outdoor living space. “You either put a room on and you enclose it so much it’s just another room or you create a three season room so you enjoy the outdoors,” Dukate says. “I’ve had clients tell me when they put that room on they just end up living out there.” DAILY JOURNAL 11

— Clean your microwave: Put sliced lemons in a bowl and micro- wave it for five minutes. You should be able to wipe the inside of the microwave clean afterward, and be left with a lemony- fresh scent. — Add some shine to your hair: Add juice of one lemon to an 8-ounce glass of warm water, then use it to rinse your hair after shampooing to add a shine. But be careful — too much lemon juice and not enough water will lighten already light hair and add an orange tinge to darker hair. — De-stink your house: Throw a few lemon peels into the sink, then flip the switch to neutralize odors. You can also clean wooden cutting boards and utensils with lemon juice to reduce odors. Or soak a sponge in lemon juice and put it in your refrigerator for a few hours to absorb smells. — Look younger: Mix a tablespoon of plain yogurt, two tablespoons of ground oatmeal, a teaspoon of turmeric and a teaspoon of lemon juice, then apply to age spots for 30 minutes. Repeat weekly. — Banish the scum: Cut a lemon in half and dip it in kosher salt. Use it to scrub hard-wa- ter stains a soap scum from your shower door. — Clean your cutting boards: White plastic cutting boards look great — until someone cuts carrots or strawberries on them. Scrub your white plastic cutting board with half a lemon, then set it out in the sun for a few hours. — Make “buttermilk”: Don’t you just hate it when you’re halfway through a recipe and find you don’t have any buttermilk? Mix one tablespoon lemon juice into a cup of milk. The acid in the lemon juice will cause the milk to start to curdle after about five minutes, which means it’s ready for you to make pancakes. — Make your stainless steel sparkle: Mix the juice from one or two lemons with four or five table- spoons of hot water and use it to wipe down your stainless steel appliances. — Write secret letters: Remember that trick you learned back in first grade where you write a note in lemon juice then expose it to a heat source to reveal the message? It still works. Use white paper and a mild heat source — a lightbulb, a steamless iron or a candle — for best results. — Make a household cleaner: Fill a half-gallon container with lemon peels, then top it off with white vinegar. Store in a cool, dark place for two weeks, strain and you’ve got a grease-cutting cleaner with some antibacterial properties. — Make lemonade: You don’t really even need a recipe to make lemonade. Just mix lemon juice, water and sugar until you find the mix you like best. Note that Meyer lemons are sweeter than most, so you might not need as much sugar as you think (straight-up Meyer lemon juice is a little harsh, but it’s not bad when mixed with water and no sweetener at all). Try agave syrup or honey instead of sugar, or add a little mint. DAILY JOURNAL 15
