R O A D T R I P S NATIONAL truth is, other than the placement of nearly 12 inches of tar and asphalt over the original granite paving stones, this place has barely changed in 200 years. And yet, it is the place where America would be changed forever. ROAD The 1/4 mile stretch of road in Addison is part of a 90-mile historic route running through southwest Pennsylvania, known as the National Road. From its modest beginnings as an Indian trail to becoming the primary pathway to the American West, the National Road has been the stage for some of most important events in US history. Revolutions - political, social, industrial and cultural - that would transform a nation from a vast, mostly uninhabited wilderness, into the powerful nation on earth.
