August, 2021 Dear Parents and Students: Welcome to the Middle School at the Hebrew Academy of Nassau County. In the coming school year, we will have many exciting programs as well as the fine tuning and building on the full and varied academic offerings at HANC. We are busy planning for the coming school year. Classes will begin on Wednesday, September 1st. Our goal is to provide a quality education in both Judaic and General Studies. Much of our success is due to our incredibly dedicated staff members who meet the needs of our students. In addition, our commitment to open communication facilitates the educational process and ensures the optimum level of achievement for each child. At HANC, students, teachers, administrators, and parents are joined in a chain of communication. We appreciate your involvement, and we truly depend on it. We, therefore, ask that you take the time to familiarize yourselves with our school’s policies and procedures as outlined in this handbook. Enjoy the rest of the summer! We look forward to seeing your children in September. Sincerely, Rabbi Elliot Hecht Principal Mrs. Jennifer Morey Assistant Principal 2

PROGRAMS & REGULATIONS The following rules and regulations have been established to enable you to understand clearly what is expected of your child as a student in a Yeshiva day school. Admission Cards Admission cards are sent under separate cover and must be returned on September 1st the first day of school. UPON ARRIVAL AT SCHOOL ON THE FIRST DAY, YOUR CHILD WILL BE ASSIGNED TO HIS OR HER CLASSROOM. Please remember your child will not be able to attend school if you did not obtain financial clearance from the administrative office. If you have any questions regarding admission cards, please call the administrative office at (516)565-5640. Attendance Comprehensive Attendance Policy Consistent attendance leads to academic success. Attendance is also crucial for keeping track of students and to be accountable to parents as to the location of their children during school hours. It is our objective to make the classes such that students want to attend which will lead to their success. Students who arrive after 8:00AM, must report to the Middle School office and have a valid note from a doctor or parent. Attendance is taken during first period. Random phone calls are made every day to absentees’ homes to check on their health and wellbeing. Attendance is taken by all teachers at the beginning of each scheduled class or study period throughout the course of the day. Attendance is also taken by all teachers during assemblies, class and school field trips, and retreats, etc. A daily report is given to the principals for their review. No student will be allowed to leave school for any reason in the middle of the school day without written consent of his/her parents and approval by the administration. In the event of a child becoming ill during the day, students must report to the Nurse’s Office before any arrangements can be made for an early departure. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCE IS A STUDENT TO LEAVE SCHOOL WITHOUT WRITTEN PERMISSION FROM AN ADMINISTRATOR. Extended vacations or vacations during school sessions should be limited. Students are responsible for all classwork, homework, and any exams missed during the time they are absent. If, in our judgment, the student has a record of excessive absences, a conference with parents will be necessary. Additionally, course credit may be denied and will be evaluated on a case-by- case basis. 6
A student it considered legally absent (excused) from school for the following reasons: sickness, death in the family, health treatment or other matters that are approved by the school. An absence is considered unexcused for all other reasons. A student who is not present in his/her classroom during the attendance check is late. A student is excused early (early dismissal) only when parental permission is given in advance in writing to the office. The attendance codes are: UA = Unexcused Absence EA = Excused Absence L = Late E = Early Dismissal Notification For this policy to be a success, it is imperative that all students and parents be aware of this policy, its purpose, procedures and the consequences of non-compliance. To ensure that students, parents, teachers and administrators are notified of and understand this policy, the following will occur: • The policy will be emailed to all students’ homes annually and posted on the school’s website. • The policy will be explained to students at their orientation assembly. • All teachers will be given a copy of this policy. • The Hebrew Academy of Nassau County Board of Education establishes the annual school calendar, taking into account both religious and secular holidays, as well as administrative and professional development days. • The BOE sends out a yearly calendar to the faculty and parent body, as well as updates when necessary. Notification to Parents Concerning Absence or Lateness • Day 2 – Administrator or school nurse will call home • 20 days - possible referral to home district and or to CPS. • Parents are informed of their child’s absence and tardiness on the report card. Parents wishing a more current record are free to call the School Office at any time. Parents may bring errors or questions to the attention of the School Office. Students who come late to school after 8AM or leave school early without a valid doctor’s note or reason will not be eligible for any after school activities or to take any exams that day. Students who are late three times per trimester without a valid reason will receive a detention. 7
Bell Schedules When the dismissal bell of a class sounds, students have 2 minutes to go immediately to their next class. Students should have all the materials with them for their classes. Students must be at their seats and ready to begin their classes on-time. Lateness will not be tolerated. In most cases, “hanging out” in the halls, visiting with friends, or walking friends to their lockers causes lateness to class. There is no time between classes for these activities. Students should be in their seats, and ready to work, when the bell rings. Do not stop in the main office, guidance office, or nurse’s office between classes without permission from your teacher. Lateness to class is disruptive to the educational process. Lateness to class will result in the following: Lateness to Class 1. 2 times – Student warning, parent notification, and deduction of points 2. 3rd and 4th time – Lunch detention 3. 5th time – 2-day lunch detention 4. 6th time – Parent conference with administrators Bulletin Boards School news, schedules and announcements are posted on the bulletin boards. Occasionally news is posted on the bulletin boards in the classrooms. For the most part, bulletin boards are reserved for class materials and students’ work. (Students are expected to read and be familiar with these notices.) STUDENTS ARE NOT PERMITTED TO POST ANY MATERIAL ON THESE BOARDS OR ANY WHERE ELSE IN THE BUILDING WITHOUT WRITTEN PERMISSION FROM ONE OF THE ADMINISTRATORS. EACH NOTICE MUST BE INITIALED BY ONE OF THE ADMINISTRATORS. Bus Behavior All basic rules of behavior as they apply in school also apply on the school bus. Respect and consideration should be shown to all passengers and the driver. BUS TRANSPORTATION MAY BE DENIED TO A STUDENT BY HIS/HER SCHOOL DISTRICT, EITHER TEMPORARILY OR PERMANENTLY, IF THE BEHAVIOR WARRANTS IT. Excuses for being late to morning Tefilah because the bus was late will be accepted in the short term. Students who arrive late because the bus arrived late must report to Mrs. Raofim in the downstairs office. A bus is late if it arrives after 7:55 A.M. If no report of the bus being late is recorded, the student is unexcused. It is the student’s responsibility to report any actions on the part of a bus driver which lead to the lateness of the bus or that could endanger the health and safety of the students. Additionally, parents should notify their local school district. 8

Dismissal Dismissal is at 4:42 PM Monday through Thursday and 1:45 PM on Friday. If a parent is picking up a child, it is the parent’s responsibility to be on time. Parents can park in the parking lot or along Oak Street. Parents must come into the building to pick up their children. We are concerned about the safety of our students. Please be sure to notify the office when your child is to go to a friend’s house after school. We ask that you send a written request whenever your child is to be dismissed to someone other than a parent. Bus companies do not permit children who are not assigned to their bus to board their vehicles. It is expected and assumed that someone is home to receive your child at drop off time. Should this not be the case, please notify the office before departure. The driver is not responsible for determining if someone is home. We appreciate your cooperation with all regulations concerning our commitment to the children’s safety. DRESS CODE REGULATIONS 2020-2021 PLEASE READ CAREFULLY Dress Code A copy of the full school dress code has been sent home under separate cover. A student who is well-groomed and neatly attired is more apt to behave and study better. In order to present a more conducive atmosphere for learning, the following Dress Code will be enforced. Emergency Home Contact Cards ACCIDENT AND/OR ILLNESS IN SCHOOL – The link to an Emergency Home Contact questionnaire will be emailed from the business office. This questionnaire must be completed and submitted as soon as possible. Please make sure that all information is accurate. Examinations Teachers are provided with a schedule of subjects by days of the week as a guideline for the administration of exams and announced quizzes to any given group of students. If a test or quiz is postponed to another day, the postponed exam may be an addition to any tests already scheduled for that day. A class with more than the allotted number of exams or quizzes on any specific day should first bring the issue to its teachers for resolution. If the issue is not resolved, a student from the class should report the issue to a principal as soon as possible, but no later than two school days prior to the scheduled exams. Please contact Mrs. Morey with any questions about the test schedule. Students absent on the day of an exam are required to make up the missed exam on the day of their return or on an alternate day as determined by the teacher. A grade of zero will be given for any missed exams not taken. Excuse from Physical Education Class State law requires all pupils in grades 7 and 8 to attend and participate in physical education. Therefore, if a child is to be temporarily excluded from any physical activity, a written note from a doctor must be given stating the reason for the temporary exclusion. If we do not receive a written request, the child will take part in outdoor recess and/or physical education classes as usual. 13
Extra-Curricular Activities, Teams and Events Book Club Debating Team - competition on inter-school levels Jewish Affairs Committee Layl Iyun - focused on specific areas of Jewish awareness Photography Committee Publications - Middle School Yearbook Retreats - at various times during the year Scrabble (inter-school competition) Sports Teams (Inter-Yeshiva League Competition): Basketball (separate boys and girls) Hockey Soccer (separate boys and girls) Coding Club Torah Bowl (Inter-Yeshiva League Competition - separate boys and girls leagues) Field Trips Educational field trips help promote learning through experience and enhance the child’s understanding of academic subjects. Notification will be sent home prior to any trip. The field trips are an integral part of our curriculum. A general trip permission slip is being sent home under separate cover. Please sign it and return it with your child to the Middle School office. Field trips have always been a source of pride and pleasure for our school and we are often complimented on the behavior of our students. Please encourage this positive behavior in your child so that we have another year with these experiences. Field trips are a privilege. Students whose behavior has been unacceptable may be excluded from participating in field trips. Fighting A student engaged in any physical altercation will be immediately disciplined. A parent conference will be required. Suspension and/or expulsion from school are possible consequences. Harassment Any form of harassment including behaviors, comments or suggestions to other students or teachers will not be tolerated. A parent conference may be required. A student who is found in violation of the code of behavior may be suspended or expelled. Homework Homework assignments are given for the following reasons: To promote good work and study habits in children. To reinforce class lessons. To provide a way for a teacher to assess student understanding To provide a sharing of learning experiences between parent and child To allow for communication between the parent and teacher 14
Success is often achieved by students who do their homework. Please help your child succeed by providing him/her with a quiet place for doing homework and setting a time when the child is expected to do homework. Please encourage your child to plan ahead with regard to long-term assignments, projects or exams. This will avoid last minute work. Assignments are posted on Blackbaud. It is the child’s responsibility to complete homework assignments. Parents should support the child in completing his or her assignments. Parents should not do the assignments. If a parent has a question with regard to an assignment, the parent should address the question to the teacher. Parents should contact the school in order to leave a message for the teacher. All teachers also have email addresses which will be distributed at the beginning of the school year. Intra/Inter-School Teams A team member is representative of the Yeshiva. Therefore eligibility for participations requires: A) Behavior reflecting his/her yeshiva background; B) A minimum academic average of 75 both in Limudei Kodesh and General Studies classes, and no grades that are incomplete or failing; and C) An approved medical card issued by our nurse prior to any try-out session for athletic teams. Students who violate these rules will not be allowed to be a member of the team. Students who are absent for all or part of a day will not be allowed to participate in any activity after school. Violation of this rule may result in removal from the team. Students whose behavior is not acceptable, according to our rules, will be removed from all intra/inter-school activities. Kashrut As most other Day Schools, HANC has a student body whose families do not all follow identical standards of religious practice. Our school, however, maintains fixed standards of observance with regard to Kashrut and Sabbath. School parties: NO home baked or homemade products may be brought into the school. Only products with reliable Kashrut supervision are acceptable. Neighborhood bakeries must also have the appropriate supervision. Open packages may not be sent in for distribution, even with an appropriate Hashgacha. The following symbols represent reliable Kashrut Supervisory Agencies: OU OK KOF-K STAR-K CRC A simple “K” or “K-Pareve” is not acceptable since these symbols do not necessarily indicate certification by a reliable Kashrut organization. “K” is a non-registered trademark which anyone may use. 15
Library HANC’s Library is open to students on Monday – Thursday from 10:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. and on Friday from 10:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M. The librarians are available to assist you with research projects and to locate materials from books, audio and visual materials, and the internet. The Library is a place of quiet study. Students violating Library rules will not be allowed to use the facilities for a period of time as determined by a Principal. Lockers All students are expected to respect the belongings of their fellow students. Any evidence of a student defacing or taking items from another student’s locker will result in disciplinary action. A student must use only his/her assigned locker. Lockers should be cleaned out regularly. The administration reserves the right to inspect lockers at any time. Students may go to their lockers upon arrival, at recess, at lunch time, before afternoon classes, after Mincha, before leaving school, and on gym days before and after gym. It is your responsibility to make sure that there is enough space in your locker to store school related materials. Kicking the lockers will not help in opening them. (The school will not be responsible for items removed from a locker that has not been properly locked). NO DECALS OR OTHER PRINTED MATERIALS ARE TO BE PLACED ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE LOCKERS. YOU WILL BE REQUIRED TO REMOVE ALL DECALS. It is expected that any interior locker decoration conforms to the spirit of a Yeshiva atmosphere. Lost and Found Any lost items will be brought to the Lost and Found bin. All small items of value (e.g. jewelry and eyeglasses) will be placed in the office. All books will be brought to a designated area adjacent to the office. Lunch Time Assorted hot and cold foods are available from our food service vendor. Only dairy lunches may be brought from home unless the school has a meat lunch. Students should eat in their 4th period classroom. Students should throw away their garbad. Classes will not be dismissed until all garbade has been disposed of. During lunch, students may be in one of the following supervised areas: gym/cafeteria, outside by the playground (weather permitting), outside by the basketball court (weather permitting) 16
Medical Information A. Immunization and Physicals: In order to attend school in September, all students must be FULLY vaccinated, as per the New York State immunization requirements. No student will be allowed to begin school unless we have ALL of the student's medical and immunization records. Students who are in the process of being immunized should reach out to their school campus to discuss the documentation that is required to be submitted. Medical exemptions will be accepted. Per the New York State legislation that went into effect on June 13, 2019, religious exemptions are no longer allowed under New York State law and will not be accepted at HANC. All required medical and immunization records MUST be submitted by AUGUST 1st. The following students must submit medical and immunization paperwork: Middle School/High School Medical & Immunization Paperwork B. Administration of Internal Medication According to N.Y. State requirements, our school nurse cannot administer medication unless the following procedure is followed: 1. The school nurse must have on file a written request from the family physician indicating the frequency and dosage of a prescribed medication. 2. The nurse must have on file a written request from the parent to administer the medication as specified by the physician. 3. The medication should be delivered directly to the school nurse by the parent. No medication should be sent to the school nurse with the child. The temptation to “share” a single dose or multiple dose is a real danger. Every year there are a number of cases of severe drug reactions reported across the nation as a result of this hazard. 4. The medication will be kept in the school nurse’s office, in a locked cabinet, completely separated from any supplies for emergency care. 5. The medication must be in the original container divided to two properly labeled bottles, one for the home, and the other for the school. Mincha Mincha will begin approximately three minutes after the 2:25 P.M. bell rings. Attendance for Mincha (for boys and girls) is, as for Shacharit, mandatory. All students are required to attend and report directly at the sound of the bell to their designated Mincha rooms. Students should not use their lockers until after Mincha. Students cutting Mincha will be subject to detention and suspension. 17
Parties-Bar/BatMitzvah If you are making a birthday party or Bar/Bat Mitzvah celebration, please keep in mind that inviting some children and not others can be hurtful. When planning your child’s at home party, please adhere to school’s kashrut policies. We also urge that paper dishes and plastic utensils be used at all times. We will address Bar/Bat Mitzvah celebrations fully with all students and families at the beginning of the school year. Parent Locker Parent Locker is a tool for teachers to communicate with their students and parents. Tests and projects are entered on the calendar, along with materials needed. On a daily basis, homework is posted and any attachments needed are provided. Test grades are also entered. This tool allows students to evaluate their progress and avoid missing work if they misplace it or are absent. Parents are also encouraged to review the site regularly. More information about Parent Locker will be sent under separate cover. Parental Financial Obligations A. To HANC The timely payment of tuition and associated fees is critical to the operation of the school. HANC will not issue diplomas, report cards or transcripts to or for students whose financial obligations to the school are in default. B. To Vendors HANC has arranged for outside vendors to provide services to its students. Parents enter into agreements with the vendors, such as for lunch services. The failure to honor the obligations to the vendors jeopardizes the availability of the vendor services to the HANC community. In order to assure continued services, we request that parents honor their commitments in a timely manner. Scholastic Achievement Report cards are distributed three times during the school year. Interim reports are also sent home. Parent-teacher conferences are scheduled during the first and second trimesters. Conferences are an important time for discussing your child’s academic progress. These conferences are held in the evenings according to the following schedule: Wednesday, November 10, 2021 Tuesday, November 16, 2021 Monday, March 14, 2022 Tuesday, March 22, 2022 Standardized tests are administered annually as a means to better evaluate each child’s progress. 18
Security Consistent with the law and HANC’s policy, we reserve the right to search any student and/or his/her personal property on HANC’s premises including vehicles, clothing, packages, purses, briefcases, lunch boxes, or other containers, if there is reason to believe that the law or HANC policy is being violated. HANC may also conduct unannounced random searches of its facilities and property. A student’s refusal to cooperate in any inspection will result in disciplinary action. Student Organization Elections will be held in the fall to select a Middle School Student Council. Membership in the Student Organization is automatic and gives you a voice in the functioning of our school. Student Organization officers will have regular meetings with the faculty advisor in order to discuss how to improve the school. Substitutes When a teacher is absent, the substitute in charge has the same authority as the regular classroom teacher. Moreover, substitute teachers are entitled to and deserve the same respect as the regular classroom teacher. Tefilah Shacharit services begins at 8:00 A.M. for both boys and girls. All students are required to bring their own siddur from home. The warning bell at 7:55 A.M. is a signal for students to begin moving towards their “M’Komot Tefilah.” Students who ignore the warning bell and do not arrive at minyan on time will be subject to disciplinary action. Repeated instances of tardiness will require a parent conference. During Tefilah, the room in which you are davening is transformed into a Mikdash M’at; a sanctified area. Students must enter the room with dignity and reverence. No talking is ever permitted during Tefilah - even during Chazarat Hashatz. For boys, Tefilin must not be removed until students are dismissed for breakfast. The Tefilin is your most valuable possession. Put them in your locker immediately after Tefilah. Please do not leave them on the tables. You may not be able to locate them the next day. Avoid Chilul Hashem! Use of Computer and Electronic Mail See policy sent under separate cover. Visitors A friend or relative may visit the school and follow your program, subject to the following rules: 1) Written permission must be obtained from the principals at least two days in advance of the proposed visit; 2) A written pass must be obtained on the day of the visit from the office; 3) A teacher in any period can exclude visitors if such presence is not considered desirable (e.g. test session) 19
