Healthy Polis Newsletter Issue 8, July 2018 This issue covers: Kim Dirks editorial Healthy-Polis workshops News from around the network Latest funding and grants news Career opportunities Conferences and events Recent publications HEALTHY-POLIS NEWS, JULY 2018 EDITORIAL Every year, I am involved in a one-week programme run by The University of Auckland called ‘Population Health Intensive’ designed to give our 5th Year Medical students the opportunity to improve their understanding of the ‘broader dimensions of health and its societal determinants’ beyond the clinical focus of their training. The students attend a half-day symposium and then spend much of their week working in teams each allocated a topic of relevance to medicine but not given much attention in the rest of the curriculum. They are expected to come up with a proposal to address a health issue based on what they have learned from visits to relevant agencies that have been prearranged, and to present their proposals to the class at the end of the week. In the programme, much is made of the ‘upstream focus’ common in public health, with an emphasis on disease prevention and health promotion and protection. As such, I was very interested to read a commentary recently published in the new Lancet Planetary Health Journal written by one of our committee members, Daniel Black, on the ‘upstream’ idea in the context of urban development. Indeed, in his article Daniel argues that the urban environment itself is actually ‘mid-stream’ and that the forces that determine the quality of the built environment lie even further upstream, particularly in private-sector led economies with landowners, financiers and developers. For those interested, Daniel and the multi-disciplinary team of public health scientists and economists with whom he works have a paper accepted and due for publication in Wiley’s Global Challenges Journal that uses the Science of Team Science ‘Four-Phase Model of Trans-Disciplinary Research' to reflect upon what worked well and what didn’t in their three year Wellcome Trust funded research pilot. The invitation from the editorial team was to consider the 'operationalisation of interdisciplinary research'. Have a look at: Black, D, Scally, G, Hunt, A, Orme, J (2018) “We must look further upstream to enable planetary health-literature urban development”, The Lancet, Vol 2, April 2018. FUNDING AND GRANTS FUNDED The Complex Urban Systems for Sustainability and Health (CUSSH) is a four-year Wellcome Trust funded project led by UCL that will deliver key global research on the systems that connect urban development and health. Alongside partner cities in France, China and Kenya the project will assist decision-makers and the public about areas of development that afford the greatest opportunities for health and sustainability. Public Health England has commissioned five rapid evidence assessments on the effectiveness of interventions to improve air quality, covering: industrial, planning, vehicle, agricultural and behavioural interventions. Four of these assessments were commissioned to IOM. LOOKING FOR RESEARCH PARTNERS We encourage calls from consortium members for opportunities for collaboration and grant opportunities.
