HAREF information bulletin 28 February 2014 This bulletin focuses on events in Newcastle and Gateshead to celebrate International Women's day International Women’s Day 2014: Inspiring change In 1910, inspired by American women campaigning for better pay for their work producing garments, Clara Zetkin declared an International Day for Women (March 8) at the Socialist Women’s Conference in Copenhagen All around the world International Women's Day is marked in different ways, including celebration of the strength, vitality and potential of women. This year's theme is 'Inspiring Change' Newcastle Council for Voluntary Service has pulled together information about events in Newcastle and Gateshead to mark International Women's Day. The information below has been put together in good faith and Newcastle CVS isn't responsible for inaccuracy in the items below - they recommend contacting the organiser before attending an event to ensure information is correct Let’s Reconnect, Wednesday 5 March, 1pm to 3pm, Room 23, Westgate College, West Road, Newcastle, NE4 9LU. Newcastle Art Development Team in partnership with Northbourne Street Youth Initiative is hosting an informal afternoon for International Women’s Day. The afternoon aims to reconnect women through art in a time of community change and will be an informal event with craft, cake and conversation. Artist Sally Southern will lead an International Women’s Day themed creative workshop which will hopefully be displayed at Westgate College. Spaces are limited so confirm attendance by email to alison.flanaganwood@newcastle.gov.uk or jane.teasdale@northbourneyi.org Streetwise Young Women’s event: A women’s event run by women for women, Wednesday 5 March, 5.30pm to 8pm, Streetwise, Unit 3, Blackfriars Court, Dispensary Lane, Newcastle NE1 4XB. Streetwise is hosting an event for International Women’s Day for young women aged 13-19 years. It is a free event with lots of lovely activities including arts and craft, tile painting, dance session, hand massage, and lots more. Celebrating International Women’s Day: A showcase of research on women and inequality, Wednesday 5 March, Room 204 and Second Floor Hub, Lipman Building, Northumbria University, Newcastle. This is a Department of Social Sciences and Languages event showcasing research by staff and students. There will be presentations from Pamela Davies, Carol Stephenson, Kirsten Haack and Katy Jenkins. Places for People and Stonham Home Group have organised this event which will have entertainment, buffet, free raffle and information and presentations to coincide with the theme of 'Inspiring Change'. Guest speakers include Councillor Linda Hobson, Kay Lynch and Vera Baird QC (Police and Crime Commissioner). It will also be a great opportunity to network and look at ways of partnership working. Come and see Open Clasp’s beautiful Songlines installation at West End Women & Girls Centre to celebrate International Women’s Day. Hear the voices of women from minority communities living in the North East told through audio recordings and film as they share stories of their childhood and home, leaving people and places behind, and of their new lives in the North East of England. Songlines was developed in collaboration with 26 women from minority communities from Byker Sands Centre - Sure Start East, Open Door North East and West End Women and Girls Centre, working alongside photographer Phyllis Christopher, visual artist Taryn Edmonds and filmmaker Kate Sweeney. This installation is the final phase of the A Song To Sing project which informed the play The Space Between Us, bringing the truth of experiences of women who are Czech/Roma, Slovak/Roma, Travellers, women seeking asylum, those who are refused and experiencing destitution, and Arabic women, from Libya, Syria and Kuwait, to a wide audience. http://openclasp.org.uk/our_work/detail/Songlines/83. International Women’s Day Networking Lunch hosted by the Women’s Fund at the Community Foundation, Friday 7 March 12 noon at the Hilton Hotel, Gateshead. The lunch is a networking and fundraising event on behalf of the Women’s Fund at the Community Foundation which aims to ensure that all women in Tyne and Wear and Northumberland have the opportunity to learn, grow and achieve. This year the theme is Inspiring Change and the Speakers are Vanda Goodfellow and a representative from Crossroad Carers Gateshead Charity. The Women’s Fund was created by women, to inspire and support other local women in our community to make a change. By joining this event, you will be able to help us support more women’s causes, and make a difference to the lives of women in the North East with a lack of opportunities. Ruins is a documentary about HIV criminalisation in Greece. A group of HIV-positive women were detained by the police, tested, charged with a felony, imprisoned and publicly exposed, with their personal details being published in the media. The documentary is directed by Zoe Mavroudi, who will introduce the film and take questions. The documentary was funded by Union Solidarity International and Unite the Union. This is a free event. Women all over the world celebrate International World Women’s Day to mark various achievements of women, and also to draw attention to the plight of many women all over the world and to challenge the status quo. Unfortunately a large number of women in Muslim countries suffer inequality in all walks of life. The reasons behind this are certainly very complicated and manifold. Islam itself is often quoted to be the root of discrimination against women in these countries. The Ahmadiyya Muslim Women Association invite you to a seminar to explore the role of women in Islam as defined by the Quran and the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) in an attempt to 'inspire change' in common perceptions about women in Islam. Please note that this is a women only event. Newcastle City Council’s Cabinet has a programme of monthly Policy Cabinet meetings. This meeting will explore the factors that continue to disadvantage women in employment at all levels of the job market and what can be done to tackle the barriers that exist for women. Women and STEM – How can more women be encouraged to develop careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths? Friday 14 March, 12pm to 2pm, Science Theatre, International Centre for Life, Newcastle NE1 4EP. Parliament's Outreach Service, in partnership with Newcastle Science City and the Institute of Physics, is holding an event that will demonstrate how select committees work and give attendees the opportunity to ask questions about the issues that concern them, as part of Science and Engineering Week 2014. This event offers members of the public the opportunity to take on the role of select committee members and quiz eminent figures on a key issue in science and technology. In recognition of International Women’s Day, Newcastle City Council would like to invite women to an evening of discussion, networking and conversations between women. There will be refreshments to start, a quiz using the e-voting system, two fantastic and inspiring women who will talk about their experiences and how they feel they have inspired change, along with a panel of women with a wealth of knowledge. The event will be chaired by Councillor Joyce McCarty and the speakers are Anne Bonner and Cecilia Eggleston. There will be plenty of opportunity to ask questions, challenge the panel and give your own views. Pictures from the ‘Inspirational Women of the North East’ photographic exhibition will be on display and a brief talk given by Rowena Russell who will explain the history behind the images. This event is part of a collaborative project between NEWomen’s Network and Oxfam UK Poverty Programme. It will focus on the conclusions and recommendations of the United Nations Convention of the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination against Women committee, in relation to women’s education, skills, employment, and economic rights. The event will be chaired by Caroline MacDonald, Policy and Learning Manager (Impact and Influence) at the Big Lottery Fund, England.
