Cut Flowers through the Seasons By Rachel Siegfried, Green & Gorgeous Green and Gorgeous is a six acre flower farm situated in South Oxfordshire. Established in 2008 by Rachel Siegfried and her partner Ashley Pearson, they grow hundreds of varieties of English country garden flowers commercially to sell at their farm gate sale, for their weddings and events, and ever-popular classes. Their flowers stand out not only for their fresh seasonal beauty, selection of interesting varieties and luscious scent but also for the sustainable principles by which the farm is run. Rachel’s floral display are the fruition of what she calls her ‘cultivated palette’ many of which are grown from seed. Rachel cutting Ammi majus (85C) We asked Rachel for advice on choosing flowers to grow throughout the year. Cut And Come Again If you keep picking it will keep flowering, don’t worry if you get behind just cut the whole plant back by half and give it a couple of weeks to come into flower again. This is particularly relevant to half hardy annuals that can flower for up to 4 months. (CCA) Mix It Up Mixed colours are a good way to get lots of choice in a small space meaning you can be more creative with your designs. (MX) Multipurpose If a flower can serve more than one purpose for example fresh or dried, cut stems and a shelter belt. (MP) Neutrals A flower that looks good with anything is invaluable. (N) Digitalis ‘Sutton’s Apricot’ (464M), Daucus ‘Dara’ (437Y) and Astrantia major (151B) (Look for the abbreviations in her list of favourites.) 4
Cut flower field at Green & Gorgeous We grow hundreds of varieties in the fields of Green and Gorgeous but I have whittled it down to my favourite, or as I often say ‘most useful’, annuals, biennials and short-lived perennials for cutting. On the next page is my shortlist to take you through the seasons. These all play different roles in my arrangements as either focal or filler flowers and look great with perhaps some more permanent plantings of shrubs, roses and perennials elsewhere in your garden. Flowers featured above (clockwise from top left): – Eryngium planum (527K HP 120cm) £1.95 – Verbena bonariensis (1275B HP 180cm) £1.95 – Echinacea purpurea (490B HP 120cm) £2.45 For more information about Green and Gorgeous and Rachel’s brilliant courses on cut flower growing please visit greenandgorgeousflowers.co.uk FYP FYP 5

The Annual Border at Aston Pottery By Stephen Baughan The great thing about annuals is that they are so easy to grow. Evolution has spent the last half a billion years honing a plant’s ability to germinate, grow, flower and set seed sometimes in as little as 6 weeks. I do so little and just let nature do its work. Another benefit of annuals is that you can adjust your planting each year and the more mistakes you make, the better your planting should be the following year. The idea for the annual border at Aston Pottery was initially conceived Within three and a half months of sowing we will aim to have a border from seeing lots of amazing annuals and having nowhere left in the full of plants so that they should all touch and stop the weed seeds from existing border to plant them. The only space left was the field at the germinating, and by four months, everything should be in full flower. side of the car park which allowed me to create a border 70m long I have one week’s holiday each year in July, and the day I come back is by 7m deep in which to plant 6000 glorious annuals. the most exciting day of the year, because I have not seen the border for Finding time to choose a whole week! The change is obviously the most marked that I experience what to grow is always a being here normally, every day of the week. challenge so quite simply, Aston Pottery is open to the public throughout the year. I take the Chiltern Seeds For more information please visit astonpottery.co.uk catalogue and spend 2 hours highlighting the seeds I want with a blue marker pen! What I love about the catalogue is the lack of photos and the illustrative descriptions allow my imagination to run riot which very often results in one or two surprises! Seeds are sown in three phases; I start in late March with smallest seeds, such as Antirrhinum which I sow in small trays. I do a second phase in mid-April and then mid-May is when the final sowing is done directly into plugs e.g. cosmos, sunflowers and zinnias. Everything is ready for planting out in the second week of June. Here are some of Stephen’s favourite colourful annuals to grow >> 12

Sabina Rüber, Photographer Sabina Rüber is the talented photographer who captures the beautiful plants for the Chiltern Seeds catalogue. We asked Sabina about her love of gardening. How did you get into gardening? My first garden accompanied a very small, Victorian cottage on the far side of Herefordshire. This was almost the middle of nowhere – deep country and farming; growing food: salad, beans and courgettes etc, was a natural thing to do. Easy annuals like calendula and cornflowers were quickly added to the mix. Poppies and forget-me-nots also volunteered. Things grew in abundance and I’ve never lost the desire to grow. When did your passion for flower photography start? Before settling in Herefordshire, I worked as a freelance photographer for newspapers and magazines in both Switzerland and the UK. Documentary, travel stories and portraits, all of which involved quite a bit of travel, which didn’t fit in well with having a small child – hence the settling. With a new space to play in, it seemed natural to combine my love of photography with a new love of gardens and plants. I was amazed at the seemingly endless variation of colour and form and the sheer joy of working with nature. How do you decide what to grow and where do you grow it? What I grow each year is a mixture of client requests and plants I’ve newly discovered which excite me. Those, and as many old favourites as I can manage, form the backdrop for many of my photos. My own garden is long (70m) and thin (10m) and an almost perfect rectangle. There I have a studio-cum-greenhouse and an assortment of garden spaces I use as stage sets for my photography. But I also grow in other locations including a half acre growing patch for sweet pea trials and a host of perennials which I use in flower arrangements – especially tulips and dahlias. 18

Grown as an annual, flowering in only a few months from seed. 100cm HP £2.75 90cm HHP £4.25 What do you look for in a plant? That’s a really difficult question. It just so depends on the context – I suppose I respond to colour above all. Shape and form are very important too – occasionally colour and form clash, they just don’t work together, but not often. I also absolutely love scent. I try to consider how a plant might work with other plants. When I have a plant to photograph, I look for what makes it special, different; I try to capture its character. What makes a flower photogenic? Catching the eye is pretty much a flower’s job (not our eyes perhaps but it seems to work for us too) so there Digitalis ‘Sutton’s Apricot’ (464M), ‘The Shirley’ Mixed (463F) are not many which are not inherently photogenic. Many with Alliums & Verbascum ‘Southern Charm’ (1271R) . are relatively easy to work with having clearly defined shapes and clear colours or markings; others are much harder to capture, especially the more intricate, wispy, floaty ones. What are your favourite elements of gardening? I love the fresh air and getting dirty! I also love the excitement of watching things grow and come into bloom. What aspects of flower growing and gardening excite you? Discovering something new – be it a plant, technique or knowledge. I love growing from seed; from such Campanula alliariifolia 261 Digitalis x mertonensis 462C unpromising beginnings, comes new life in such Abutilon vitifolium 6M An attractive perennial with Fine hybrid with large flowers, Rather lovely, fast-growing woolly stems bearing long, said to have the colour (but not, abundance – it always gives me a thrill. deciduous shrub from Chile creamy-white, nodding flowers of course, the taste!) of crushed bearing copious large mauve in June and July. strawberries. sabinaruber-photographer.com saucer-shaped flowers. 60cm HP £1.95 90cm HP/HB £1.95 300cm HSh £2.95 19

An Ornamental Kitchen Garden By Jack and Laura Willgoss, Wildegoose Nursery, Shropshire Here at Wildegoose, we enjoy the ornamental qualities of vegetables and love combining them with flowers as well as having a vegetable garden to keep us well fed. We used to try to grow everything but now we try to limit our efforts and In the past we have done one big sowing of salad leaves, herbs, beans, grow the things we like to eat, otherwise we end up each year wasting carrots and beetroot, even flowers for cutting and then forgotten to do harvests of vegetables that we’re not that keen on. How I Started Growing Vegetables By Clare Foster, Garden Editor of House & Garden Magazine I have been a passionate grower of veg since I was in my late twenties, when I had my first allotment in London. I was working for Gardens Illustrated Magazine at the time, and the editor Rosie Atkins, who could obviously see a spark somewhere, nudged me into applying for an allotment. Slightly terrifyingly, I whizzed quickly up the waiting list and before I knew it was faced with an enormous and somewhat overgrown allotment plot to call my own. I roped in my cousin who agreed to take on half the plot, and within weeks I had started to sow my first crops. I was completely addicted. Ever since then I have religiously grown I grow small quantities my own veg year after year. Life just of the vegetables that wouldn’t be the same without being able I know my family like to pop out into the garden to pick a few best, and try to have courgettes or runner beans. My children a succession of crops have grown up with super-fresh organic through the summer vegetables served up on a daily basis and into autumn rather than huge gluts of one thing. Due to lack of space all summer long, and although they may I reluctantly forego crops like onions, which I know are so readily available groan when they see swiss chard on the in the shops, and concentrate instead on things like squash, tomatoes and table for the zillionth time, they have had Romanesco cauliflower, seeking out super-tasty varieties that you can’t the benefit of all that nutrient-rich food for their entire lives.
