Greythorn Probus presents Tasmania in Spring – Food, Wine & Flowers 6 to 13 October, 2021 Day 1 – Wednesday 6/10/21 (Melbourne/Launceston) (LD) Departing home this morning, we head to Tullamarine in plenty of time for our flight to Launceston. On touching down in Tasmania, we’ll be met by our affable Tasmanian Coach Captain. Once onboard the coach, he will take us on an orientation tour of Launceston, including a cruise on the spectacular Cataract Gorge. We’ll appreciate the stunning gorge from the perspective of the water, and learn a little more about the area. What a perfect introduction to our wonderful tour of the Apple Isle. Late afternoon we check into our accommodation and freshen up before dinner. Lunch provided today. Overnight & dinner: Best Western Plus Launceston Day 2 – Thursday 7/10/21 (Launceston/Somerset) (BLD) We explore Tasmania’s wonderful north coast today as we travel from Launceston to Somerset, with many fabulous stops along the way. For the foodies among us, we’ll stop at Ashgrove Farm; home to Ashgrove Cheese, a Tasmanian family owned and operated company, with a team of dedicated locals have been producing award winning dairy products for over 22 years. Taste the creamy farm ice-cream, fresh bottled milk, cheese, cream, and butter. Stock up on provisions, including gourmet Tasmanian produce, cheese platters, and more, made with award winning farm milk. Sneak a peek through the viewing window, where you will get a behind the scenes look at how we make our cheese using traditional techniques with modern methods. For those with a sweet tooth, we’ll call into Anvers Chocolate Factory where we'll be tempted by some delicious hand-made Belgian Chocolate made on site. Anvers confectionery was established as a cottage industry in November 1989, by Igor Van Gerwen, who came to Australia from Belgium. In Devonport we visit the old Harbour Master’s House which is now the site of the Bass Straight Maritime Centre. We’ll take a tour this afternoon and learn more about the history of the area and Bass Strait, from fishing to transport across the strait, and of course shipwrecks in this treacherous passage! Departing Devonport, we follow the coastline to Somerset, just west of Burnie. Arriving late this afternoon, we’ll check into our accommodation and settle in for the next couple of nights. Lunch provided today. Overnight & dinner: Best Western Murchison Lodge Greythorn Probus – Tasmania – 6 to 13 October 2021 -1- Group Link – (03) 9852 1311
Day 3 – Friday 8/10/21 (Burnie – Local Attractions) (BLD) Our day is spent exploring the attractions in and around Burnie. Just out of town, in Romaine, we visit the beautiful, internationally acclaimed, multi award winning woodland garden at the Emu Valley Rhododendron Garden. With lakes, waterfalls and meandering paths there is always something beautiful to see in this 11-hectare garden, but in spring it is an absolute delight! After plenty of time to soak up the beauty, we enjoy a light lunch here, before returning to town to visit the Maker’s Workshop. Here we’ll take part in a ‘hands on’ paper making tour and visit the Gallery Giftshop where we can pick up some locally made souvenirs. Late afternoon we return to our accommodation in time to freshen up before dinner. Lunch provided today. Overnight & dinner: Best Western Murchison Lodge Day 4 – Saturday 9/10/21 (Somerset/Wynyard/Smithton) (BD) Spring is such a beautiful time of the year, with flowers blooming and washing everything with colour, and filling the air with scent. Today we continue touring beautiful gardens of the area to appreciate this beautiful season in this magnificent part of the world! Our morning begins with a visit to a local private garden, before heading into town to explore the Wynyard Tulip Festival. This annual event is about more than just tulips! It is a celebration of Wynyard, the community, colour and beauty with a variety of entertainment, food and drink stalls, and activities. We’ll take time here to get some lunch (own expense) while we wander the festival and enjoy the entertainment on offer. This afternoon we head to the Table Cape Tulip Farm and take in the stunning views of the rows and rows of colourful tulips in full bloom. The rather unique location of the tulip farm, a flat-topped promontory known as Table Cape, adds to the incredible beauty with the ocean views in the background. After plenty of time to stroll the fields and take in the spectacular scenery, we continue on to Smithton for our next overnight stop. Lunch today, own expense. Day 5 - Sunday 10/10/21 (Smithton/Stanley/Zeehan) (BLD) This morning we'll continue our exploration of Far North West Tasmania. Circular Head municipality – known as "The Edge Of The World" – covers an area of 4,917km2. The municipality gained its name from the unusual land formation commonly known as “The Nut” at Stanley, the solidified lava lake of a long – extinct volcano. The Nut was sighted by Bass & Flinders on their historic circumnavigation of Tasmania in 1798. Circular Head’s beautiful, unspoilt coastline is one of the longest in the State and its rich, red–brown fertile soils, coupled with a gently undulating landscape, support 33 per cent of Tasmania’s dairy farms. Other key industry sectors include commercial fishing and aquaculture, forestry, manufacturing, prime beef production, agriculture, and tourism. After time to explore The Nut and get plenty of photos, we begin heading south to Zeehan in the heart of the rugged and beautiful west coast. Once Tasmania’s third largest town, and called ‘the Silver City’, this previously bustling town is now better known for its heritage charm. We have a couple of nights here, so we can settle in before dinner this evening. Lunch provided today. Overnight & dinner: Heemskirk Motor Lodge Day 6 – Monday 11/10/21 (Zeehan/Strahan/Zeehan) (BLD) Our destination this morning is Strahan – one of the most isolated outposts in Australia. Strahan is located on a spectacularly beautiful harbour which leads to the entrance of the stunning Gordon River. It is here that we depart on a delightful cruise through Macquarie Harbour and the famous Gordon River. Our first visit is to Hells Gate, the harbour entrance to the great Southern Ocean. Departing Hells Gate, we enjoy a superb smorgasbord lunch. At the southeast corner of the harbor, we enter the majestic Gordon River with its mirror like reflections, Huon pine trees and the wilderness board walk. Mid- afternoon we return to Strahan and enjoy some free time before we enjoy some evening entertainment at The Ship That Never Was. The play tells the story of ten convict shipwrights from the Sarah island penal Settlement, who stole the last ship built at the settlement and made their escape to Chile. After the play we return to Zeehan. Lunch provided today. Overnight & dinner: Heemskirk Motor Lodge Greythorn Probus – Tasmania – 6 to 13 October 2021 -3- Group Link – (03) 9852 1311
Day 7 – Tuesday 12/10/21 (Zeehan/Cradle Mountain/Launceston) (BLD) After breakfast we load up the coach to head back to Launceston, but today we give the term ‘taking the scenic route’ a whole new meaning as travel via Cradle Mountain. Cradle Mountain is one of Tasmania’s most popular natural attractions, and with stunning scenery and an abundance of native wildlife it is easy to see why! At the Cradle Mountain Visitor Centre, we transfer to the Cradle Mountain Shuttle Bus for our tour into the park. Dove Lake offers the most beautiful views and our tour today will no doubt prove to be a highlight of our time in Tasmania. This afternoon we settle back on the coach, passing through Sheffield – the town of murals, as we make our way into Launceston for our final night on tour. Lunch provided today. Overnight & dinner: Best Western Plus Launceston Day 8 - Wednesday 13/10/21 (Launceston/Home) (BL) It may be our last day on tour, but that doesn’t mean that we have nothing left to do! Our mini gourmet foodies tour continues today when we visit the Tasmanian Gourmet Sauce Factory, we'll be sure to pick up some gourmet delights. In the Tasting Room, be guided through the delicious range of products, such as a variety of berry fruit sauces, chocolate sauce and savour the award-winning chutneys, mustards, pasta sauces and jams. Products are made using the finest premium Tasmanian fruit. Surrounding the centre is the renowned open garden and topiary nursery. From the garden enjoy the views of the Eastern Highlands. With another local family story to learn, we'll visit Josef Chromy Winery for our last Tasmanian treat before setting off to the airport. Josef fled his war-torn Czech village in 1950 as a penniless 19-year-old after eleven years of Nazi and Soviet occupation. He escaped across borders guarded by minefields, dogs and soldiers, suffering five months of privation before immigrating to Australia. Over the next 40 years, he used his skills as a Master Butcher and Smallgoods Maker to build his business, Blue Ribbon Meat Products, into one of Tasmania’s leading brands. Josef Chromy OAM has been instrumental to the Tasmanian food and wine industry, having owned and developed some of Tasmania’s leading wineries including Rochecombe (now Bay of Fires), Jansz, Heemskerk and Tamar Ridge. In December 2007, at age 76, when most people would be thinking about easing up, Joe launched Josef Chromy Wines. In just over 4 years, Josef Chromy Wines made an impressive impact on the Australian Wine industry. Through the hard work of many, Josef Chromy Wines built sales of 28,000 cases in a profitable and sustainable manner. In a very short period, Josef Chromy Wines amassed 14 trophies and 170 medals, making it one of the most successful launches in the history of the Tasmanian Wine Industry. After our visit we'll know how good the wine really is! We'll head to the airport this afternoon and check in for our flight home. What an amazing trip it has been, covering so much distance, visiting so many unique attractions, learning so much about the state, and meeting lots of friendly locals! Lunch provided enroute.
