“Converting to GreenEarth was one of the best business decisions we have made in our 58-year history.” Shawn McCann, Best Cleaners Connecticut “I read all the promotional material you sent us and I thought it sounded too good to be true. I thought that if half of your claims were true I would be happy, that it was a lot of hype to sell the product. Well I am delighted to say that every last word about the benefits of GreenEarth Cleaning is true and more.. We are producing the best garment I have ever seen in dry cleaning and I am a third generation dry cleaner, have been in business all my life. I especially love how soft, bright and beautiful the silk garments are! My press- ers love the fact that the clothes are less wrinkled and easier to finish. Most of all, I am so happy that I don’t have to breathe perc anymore.” Debbie Schuster, Blossom Hill Cleaners Los Gatos, CA “Siloxane D5 does not pose a danger to the environment... it is virtually impossible for Siloxane D5 to occur in any environmental matrix at concentrations sufficient to cause damage. Consequently, the Board has determined that current uses of Siloxane D5 do not pose a risk of danger to the environment. The Board has further concluded that there is no potential for future uses of Siloxane D5 to result in danger to the environment.” Siloxane D5 Board of Review Environment Canada, 2012 “No risks are identified to the air, water, and the terrestrial compartments, nor to humans exposed via the environment from the production and all uses of D5.” Environment Risk Assessment Report UK Environment Agency, 2009 1
“Perc’s impact on the environment and on humans (it’s a suspected carcinogen at very high doses), as well as, its odor have given rise to three eco-friendly alternatives. The most popular of them, recommended by several experts we spoke to…is a silicone-based solvent called GreenEarth.” Real Simple Magazine, March2006 It isn’t easy being green. Unless you’re GreenEarth®. With every entrepreneur on the planet looking for “green” business opportunities today, it isn’t always easy to make both a difference and a profit. With GreenEarth Cleaning, it pays to go green. How well? Just ask one of the 1600+ Affiliate locations using GreenEarth. Americans spend upwards of $9 billion dollars a year at the dry cleaners. Seventy percent of those cleaners still use perchloroethylene, or perc, a 1940’s era cleaning solvent considered by the EPA to be an air and water toxin and a likely human carcinogen. Exposure can lead to increased risk of cancer, eye, nose, throat and skin irritation, and reduced fertility. Contamination from spills and leaks can mean millions in clean up costs. Regulators and dry cleaners have worked hard, and successfully, to reduce emissions and control many of the risks associated with the use of perc. But California has determined that a more permanent solution is necessary. As a result, they have banned perc, as well as the purchase of machines that use it. And while they were the first state to do so, they likely won’t be the last. The upshot? Ready or not, a new era of “dry greening” has begun. What many people don’t realize is that going green is easier said than done. In all the talk about sustainability, an important issue often overlooked is the sustainability of the business model. It is a particularly difficult equation in dry cleaning. Perc is a very aggressive cleaning solvent and hard to beat. Replacing machinery is expensive. There is no guarantee that additional environmental legislation won’t be enacted. Different cleaning methods have different labor and operating costs. The marketplace is overcrowded and highly fragmented, making it harder to stand apart from the pack. Dry cleaners nationwide wrestle with how to protect the business for future generations. In California, many lifelong perc cleaners are choosing to close their doors rather than start over. Why on earth would anyone want to get into dry cleaning at a time like this? Because now there’s GreenEarth Cleaning. And for the first time, dry cleaners and their customers have a real choice. Because GreenEarth is different. Different in how it protects the environment. Different in what it does for clothes. Different in how it creates a competitive advantage for dry cleaners. Different in how it can benefit your bottom line. And we’re not just marketers saying that. GreenEarth Cleaning is a company formed and run by long-time dry cleaners, all intimately familiar with the unique challenges of running a successful dry cleaning operation. The efficacy 1 1
and efficiency of our cleaning process have been optimized with the help of two of the world’s largest companies, Procter & Gamble and General Electric, as well as with the collaboration of the industry’s leading manufacturers of dry cleaning equipment, detergents and spotting agents. Easy to be environmentally responsible. GreenEarth is so safe the EPA does not regulate it. Which means it’s safe for the air, water and soil. Unlike hydrocarbon, the U.S. EPA has specifically exempted it from the VOC regulation due to its very low reactivity in the air. The GreenEarth solution is not a VOC; it is environmentally non-toxic and non-hazardous. If you wanted to, you could safely rub it on your skin. In fact, you probably already do. That’s because GreenEarth’s solution is pure liquid silicone—essentially liquefied sand. It’s the same base ingredient found in everyday shampoos, conditioners and lotions. When released to the environment, GreenEarth safely breaks down into its three natural elements – sand (SiO2) and trace amounts of water and carbon dioxide. So there’s never any worry about expensive groundwater or soil contamination clean ups. Buying an existing perc cleaner? Installing GreenEarth beforehand provides protection from any prior contamination. Easy to trust. Over 30 million dollars in voluntary testing and independent regulatory reviews confirm that the silicone used in GreenEarth’s cleaning system does not pose harm to people or to the environment. But at GreenEarth, we do something remarkable with that information. We make the results public. We’re proud to be the only dry cleaning alternative to openly report extensive testing on its environmental and health and safety profile. Easy on garments. Extensive IFI (International Fabricare Institute, now the DLI or Dry Cleaning & Laundry Institute) testing confirms that GreenEarth cleans as well as the industry standard perc with no environmental concerns. In addition, the same tests show that with GreenEarth, you can clean a wider variety of specialty fabrics and trims. So garments most dry cleaners currently turn away or send out can be processed in GreenEarth and contribute to your bottom line. Easy to work with. GreenEarth isn’t hard or complicated to work with. And, unlike perc, which has a strong chemical odor frequently associated with headaches and dizziness, GreenEarth has no odor. Employees are so much happier in an odorless shop! Easy to save money. Because GreenEarth reduces a substantial percentage of the labor in the dry cleaning process, Affiliates enjoy two advantages over other cleaners. Labor costs are lower and productivity is higher. Other money saving benefits include fewer claims due to damage, shrinkage or fading, lower waste hauling costs, lower energy costs, minimal to no environmental insurance costs and no future clean up costs. 2 1
Easy to grow sales. Affiliates who market their GreenEarth difference often see sales go up immediately. GreenEarth has an instantly recognizable brand appeal and an evironmental solution that is sustainable in every sense of the word. And because customers can actually see, touch and smell the difference in their clothes, they tend to bring more items in, more often. Even better, they recommend it to their friends and family. You don’t just get customers. You get loyal customers. Easy to promote. As a GreenEarth Affiliate, you have access to a wide variety of professionally developed, high-quality, customizable advertising and promotional materials as a part of your license fee. Email marketing, websites, ads, brochures, posters, direct mail postcards, Valpak, Money Mailers, van wraps, hotel and route marketing, hang tags, garment care tags, counter materials, press releases, customer letters, you name it—all designed to highlight what makes your store(s) better and all easily customized with your store’s name, logo, address and phone number. Easy to get landlord approval. Remember, the silicone used in the GreenEarth Cleaning process is so safe the EPA doesn’t regulate it—either in dry cleaning or in any of its other many applications. So landlord concerns at locations where other dry cleaning solvents are prohibited aren’t a concern with GreenEarth. In fact, Kimco, Regency Centers and Edens & Avant are a few of the property management companies that are specifying GreenEarth at their locations. To make approval easier with landlords not yet familiar with GreenEarth, we offer professionally developed materials designed to educate them about the environmental and traffic-building advantages GreenEarth can bring to their retail site. Easy to afford equipment. The average price of a Class IIIA machine to run GreenEarth is one-half to two-thirds less than CO2 machine systems, and about the same as comparable wet cleaning machines. GreenEarth’s patented silicone solution can also run in most hydrocarbon machines; if you are considering purchase of an existing business that runs hydrocarbon, you would likely not need to purchase new machinery. “Linden (GreenEarth) Cleaners in Darien, CN., is trying something new, as are hundreds of other professional cleaners throughout the country. Environmental concerns and the telltale odor of the standard solvent, perchloroethylene (or perc), have opened the door to three new methods of dry cleaning. They are: GreenEarth, a silicone-based solvent used in modified dry cleaning machines; liquid carbon dioxide (CO2) used in high-pressure cleaning machines; and “wet cleaning” with plain water in computer-controlled washing machines…Using identical sets of garments, we compared the new cleaning methods to conventional cleaning with perc. The CO2 and silicone-based processes performed, as well as, or better than conventional dry cleaning, for about the same price. Wet cleaning was less impressive.” Consumer Reports, February 2003 3 1
“After reviewing a number of environmentally-friendly technologies, I found the GreenEarth solution to be the only real option for me. Equally important as its performance is its affordable cost, which is considerably less expensive than other alternatives.” Mack Davis, Medlin-Davis Cleaners Raleigh, NC Look before you leap Like any good businessperson, you will want to look at all your options before making a decision. In fact, we encourage you to do so. Go online, talk with industry sales professionals and visit as many plants as you can. When all is said and done, we’re confident you’ll find GreenEarth to be your dry cleaning method of choice. Remember, we’re all former dry cleaners ourselves. We know what it takes to be successful in this industry. What about professional wet cleaning and CO2? Both are very good choices environmentally, but less than one-third of one percent of dry cleaners use CO2 or 100% wet cleaning today. Why? Largely because equipment, processing and finishing costs are so much higher, and the processes so different, few operators have been able to turn a profit using either system exclusively. Wet cleaning is optimally efficient when it represents 20-50% of the overall processing in a dry cleaning plant. We believe it to be the optimal partner with the GreenEarth system. The challenge CO2 operators face is that the large capital investment in equipment typically dictates a higher pricing structure and/or a central plant with drop store operating model, which can indicate a lower profit margin than packaged plants. The high pressure required to turn CO2 gas into liquid can damage buttons, crush acetate linings and cause excessive wrinkling. And with so few CO2 machines being sold, reliable parts and service over the long-term may remain a concern. GreenEarth is a better choice for you. Why not hydrocarbon solvent? Sold under brand names like DF-2000® and EcoSolv® by Exxon-Mobil and Chevron-Phillips, hydrocarbon solvent has been a popular alternative for dry cleaners looking to move away from perc because it is affordable and offers familiarity in equipment design. That may be changing. Hydrocarbon turns out not to be the “green” choice many thought it was. While certainly a big improvement over perc, hydrocarbon poses a number of environmental concerns. It is classified as a VOC, a likely contributors to smog formation, and volatile organic compounds have come under increased regulatory scrutiny. Hydrocarbons are also listed by the EPA as a neurotoxin and skin and eye irritant for workers and would likely require a clean up if spilled. The good news for operators of plants running DF-2000® and EcoSolv® who are worried about the regulatory climate is that most Class IIIA machines that use hydrocarbon solvent can easily switch to GreenEarth. 4 1
How does n-Propyl Bromide fit in? A primary component of a number of brand names including Ensolve® and DrySolv®, n-Propyl Bromide is a popular alternative for operators searching for a short-term “band aid” to replacing perc. True, it can work in modified perc machines but it’s highly aggressive properties (KB value of 125) can also create new problems with garment and machine damage. Plus, n-Propyl Bromide does not solve the environmental dilemma. It’s still classified by the EPA as a VOC and a likely reproductive toxin. At a minimum, its use in California would likely require Proposition 65 warnings. The long range regulatory outlook is unclear. There remain serious concerns about handling and the safety of workers subjected to exposure to n-Propyl Bromide, and the effects on equipment when moisture or water is introduced into the solvent system. What’s the story on SYSTEM K4? Introduced to the European market in October of 2010, SYSTEM K4 is the newest alternative solvent system on the market. Although Kruessler has chosen not to release details of K4’s chemical composition, laboratory analysis has confirmed that the solvent is formaldehyde dibutyl acetal, also known as dibutoxymethane. The higher KB value of SYSTEMK4 gives it a more aggressive cleaning profile - closer to perc than most alternative solvents. Kruessler mandates the use of four proprietary products (solvent, detergent, pre-spotter, water repellant) to operators of SYSTEM K4. The combination of additives is designed to improve cleaning performance, as well as, stabilize the solvent’s chemical composition and maintain the 143 º F flashpoint. The K4 system requires a specific Class IIIA machine configuration. In an effort to remove as much of the characteristic solvent odor from the garments as possible, machine manufacturers have developed modifications to standard drying systems (fan inverters, multiple refrigeration coils and expansion valves and button trap dampers). Other equipment modifications designed to safeguard against “cracking” of the solvent include the elimination of carbon (cartridges) and activated clay filtration (ACF) capabilities coupled with security features designed to lower the probability of attaining unsafe distillation temperature levels. Although positioned as eco-friendly, K4 is a significant VOC with minimum incremental reactivity (MIR) that is more than three times higher than hydrocarbon solvents used in dry cleaning. “We took a close look at how perc compares to the newer “green” processes in regards to both cleaning and impact on the environment. We found that while perc is good on greasy stains like oil and lipstick, GreenEarth, a liquid silicone cleaner that’s supposed to degrade to sand, carbon dioxide and water, was the best overall at removing stains. If it does break down as claimed, that’s good news for consumers and the planet.” Good Housekeeping, July 28, 2011 5 1
“When we were looking at taking Tide’s history and heritage in cleaning into the dry cleaning space, there was only one partner we considered to help pave the way: GreenEarth. Their technology and industry expertise made GreenEarth a perfect fit for Tide Dry Cleaners, and has helped our business get off to a great start in Kansas City. The consumer response to the Tide Dry Cleaning test stores has been overwhelmingly positive, and GreenEarth’s role in providing the consumer experience we were looking for can’t be overlooked. We Your competitors will couldn’t be happier.” Gary Coombe, Procter & Gamble be green with envy. Cincinnati, OH The best part about being a GreenEarth cleaner is the instant appeal it creates with customers. GreenEarth offers a fresh, unique way to dry clean, and people genuinely love it. In a sea of sameness—where everyone talks about the same three benefits of quality, service and convenience—you can stand out with something truly different. While there are many unique benefits to GreenEarth Cleaning, our Affiliates find that the three messages that attract the most new customers are “odor-free”, “gentle” and “environmentally non-toxic”. Odor is the #1 process complaint in dry cleaning. And there has never been a time in history when “green” has meant more to consumers. Consumers actually go out of their way for benefits like these. Affiliates who market their difference report sales increases in the double digits, year after year. Win lifetime customers Once customers try GreenEarth, they don’t want to go back to “regular” dry cleaning. That’s because, unlike superficial marketing claims, GreenEarth offers customers a difference they can actually see, feel and smell. Colors are brighter, whites are whiter and clothes are free of damage or shrinkage. They are softer, drape nicely, and feel better on your skin. And of course, they no longer have any nasty dry cleaning odor; clothes are always fresh and clean right out of the bag. Many customers try GreenEarth because of what it does for the planet, but they become customers for life because of what it does for their clothes! Stand out in your community Our name means alot. As a GreenEarth cleaner you stand apart. All too often, the quick, transactional nature of dropping off and picking up dry cleaning makes it easy to forget just how much customers care about the garments they have dry cleaned, and how much they care about looking and feeling good in them. People don’t want to have their special, high-quality garments cleaned by just anyone. They want a special, high-quality cleaner. One who is as gentle and effective as they are environmentally friendly. 6 1

When they came back, she was pleased with one thing that wasn’t there. “I definitely noticed the difference in odor. They didn’t smell like dry cleaning,” Morrell said. “They definitely were better. The colors stayed vibrant… (GreenEarth) just doesn’t break the fab- ric down…Owner Joe Lothrop—who has been doing dry cleaning for 30 years and whose father was in the business before him, already swears by it. “I’ll never use another solvent in my entire life,” he declared recently while taking a visitor on a tour of his plant, which is noticeably lacking any smell announcing it as a dry cleaner. In 30 years in the industry I’ve never seen anything so revolutionary.” The Washington Post, November 9, 2000. “Dry Cleaning that’s Easier on Your Nose and Clothes.” 7 1
“We currently have a style with beads which we have an issue with melting using perchloroethylene. We have tested the beads using the Greenearth solution and this has been successful. We would therefore like to recommend this method of cleaning to our customers for this product.” Maria Houghton, Fabric Technologist Bravissimo Label this the future of dry cleaning It’s no secret that traditional dry cleaning solvents can be very harsh on fabrics and ornamentation. Care label standards even have a symbol (circle F) for use in care instructions when the aggressiveness of perc creates a damage risk for garments. “No perc” instructions are nothing new. What is new, and very exciting for GreenEarth Affiliates, is the momentum building toward care instructions that specifically recommend the GreenEarth Cleaning method. What’s happening in care labeling? The care labeling system, and the definition of its symbols, has strived to evolve over the years along with the industry. But the truth is, marketplace relevance remains elusive. GreenEarth’s silicone-based cleaning methodology is a case in point. Although the technology has been available since 1999 and customers access it through more than 6,000 retail points of service in more than forty countries, the organizations that govern U.S. and international care labeling - the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the International Standards Organization (ISO) - have yet to officially recognize it as a solvent alternative or include it in the definitions of approved care symbols. And while this may change after the FTC completes its undertaking to propose updated Rulemaking for Care Labeling, true progress takes years within any regulatory process. Fortunately, leading garment manufacturers are not waiting for instructions from the FTC or the ISO on what makes the best care instructions for the garments they are producing. They are looking to GreenEarth as a branded solution provider for the care and cleaning of garments they are making today. “Be green when you dry clean” instruction Why? Because there is a new imperative for gentle and with GreenEarth sustainable garment care and no other cleaning method can store locator was produced meet their needs as effectively as GreenEarth. Will there be labels recommending GreenEarth? There already are. More than six million labels were produced in Europe last year and twelve million more are in 2012 for items already in production so far this year. And this is just the now being sold beginning. Because the truth is, these labels came about in stores. before GreenEarth’s coordinated labeling program was even deployed, as part of a grassroots initiative through our Affiliate in the United Kingdom, A21 1
Johnson’s Cleaners. Johnson’s has a 25% market share in the UK, and London is a global fashion center; manufacturers frequently come to them for garment testing support. These first labels illustrate the power of GreenEarth’s unique selling proposition - no other cleaning method can meet the growing demand for textile care that is gentle, petroleum-free and widely available to the public. To proactively leverage this opportunity, GreenEarth has officially launched a dedicated Garment Care Initiative; we are devoting significant resources to garment testing, retailer support and manufacturer outreach with one goal in mind: to secure care recommendations that drive new business into the stores of our licensed Affiliates. What is GreenEarth doing exactly? GreenEarth is working on a number of fronts to make GreenEarth the recommended method of care for garments today and in the future, including: • Full-on support to manufacturers approaching GreenEarth and/or its Affiliates with requests for garment testing, development of labels and consultation • Proactive education efforts with manufacturers, retailers, suppliers and schools in the fashion industry - making presentations, consulting with garment technologists, networking at trade shows, collaborating on curriculum, etc. • Ongoing development of dedicated presentation tools, video, print collateral and online resources to support outreach efforts - for GreenEarth Cleaning and for Affiliates at the local level to use in support initiatives with local retailers, anywhere around the globe • Proactive testing and targeted outreach to garment technologists and top level executives of manufacturers demonstrating the GreenEarth solution for care recommendations • Placement of testing equipment where garments are made (Asia, Europe, United States) Garment technicians examine successful results of GreenEarth testing on a heavily beaded dress from Coast, a special occasion retailer A22 1
Fashioning the future As part of our new Garment Care Initiative, we reach out to manufacturers and retailers on an ongoing basis. Here are a few of the brands approved for GreenEarth care recommendations: These brands represent cutting edge fashion. Topshop, for example, has worked some of fash- ions biggest stars - Alexander McQueen, Celia Birtwell, Kate Moss and Jonathon Saunders, to name a few. Miss Selfridge is known for using supermodels like Naomi Campbell and Yasmin le Bon while Montague Burton has revolutionized men’s tailoring. The stable of iconic brands predisposed to specifying GreenEarth Cleaning is destined to grow. The fabric care imperative Many of the fabrics, trims and components in today’s At the request of fashion world simply cannot withstand the aggressivity of perc. manufacturer Garment makers are thrilled to have a viable option for good partmers, customer care to replace the unsatisfactory “Spot clean” and GreenEarth “Dry clean exclusive of trim” care instructions made necessary created a care label by perc. Delicately embroidered and highly embellished directing “problem items” are no problem at all when GreenEarth consumers to Cleaning is the recommended method of care. GreenEarth global store locator with a The GreenEarth garment care opportunity is not limited to QR code labels in garments. GreenEarth also provides support and materials to Affiliates interested in forming local retail partnerships; educating salespeople on the GreenEarth advantage and helping them maintain inventory in ready to wear condition are excellent ways to build referral customer business. The sustainability imperative As manufacturers look at their business over the long-term, shareholder and consumer demand compel them to invest in sustainability for bottom-line business health. For manufacturers integrating sustainability into their business model, petroleum-based cleaning methodologies are a strategic concern. Rather than stain their brand reputation, some are recommending A23 1
hand washing dry cleanable garments, a less than ideal solution for their upscale customers who prefer hassle-free garment care. Many brands are embracing labels with the phrase “Be green when you dry clean” and the GreenEarth web address as an ideal solution to the dilemma of sustainability and transparency in their value chain. The network makes it work The gentle cleaning and environmentally non-toxic characteristics of the GreenEarth Cleaning method appeal strongly to manufacturers and retailers, but GreenEarth’s worldwide network of licensed Affiliates is the reason why the Garment Care Initiative is enjoying success. • The breadth of our reach, both internationally and across the United States, means that customers are able to comply with a GreenEarth care label recommendation • The depth of our expertise, with decades of dry cleaning and specialty dry cleaning (leather, fur, sequins) experience at the couture and museum-quality level, means that local Affiliates and designers alike can rely on our knowledge and skilled craftsmanship for one-of-a-kind support Dedicated to making a difference GreenEarth is much more than solvent in a machine. Manufacturers recommend the GreenEarth Cleaning process, not silicone solvent, because it is an entire system of care designed to provide the best possible fabric care with the lowest overall environmental impact. Our process includes: • Testing and approval of any additives for use in the system to ensure a green waste stream • Innovation center and quality evaluation lab equipped with measurement devices to evaluate new cleaning additives, methodologies and machine programs and scientifically quantify results • Research and development efforts - both stand alone and in collaboration with our Affiliates, machine and additive partners - to bring about new technologies and methodologies that improve outcomes, cut energy and water consumption and reduce residual waste • Examples of R&D initiatives: proprietary cold-filtration technology to reduce energy consumption and improve cleaning efficacy, solvent heating to reduce pre and post spotting, proprietary programs (to reduce cycle times, enable cleaning of fragile garments without mechnical action, etc.) and unique, low cost GreenEarth machines configured to deliver optimal results without the costly components required by the chemical and hazardous composition of other solvents • Partnership with Dry Cleaning Laundry Institute (DLI), standards organizations and testing companies (e.g. SGS) to independently test and measure performance results for manufacturers • Always on call technical assistance for all licensed Affiliates to solve any problem, any day • Dispute resolution service to ensure alignment of consumer, cleaner and manufacturer interests “I am a researcher at the British Museum who is aiming to develop a non-aqueous treatment for iron-tannate dyed organic materials within the Museum’s collections. The dye causes the accelerated degradation of priceless and culturally significant artifacts. GreenEarth could be of great importance in this research as an environmentally friendly solvent suitable (to our needs).” Helen Wilson, Textile and Fibres Studio Department of Conservation and Scientific Research A24 1
“We’ve used the GreenEarth marketing materials to establish a point of difference between us and other cleaners in the area and 95% of our walk-in business makes a comment or asks a question about the GreenEarth Cleaning difference featured in our ads.” The bottom line: Frank D’Eufemia Jr., Van Tassel Cleaners New City, NY your bottom line. GreenEarth is more than an eco-friendly cleaning system; it is a breath fresh of fresh air for business. By the EPA’s calculation, dry cleaners that convert an existing shop or start up any new green clean operation can expect to increase their profits by 5% and their return on investment by 78%. GreenEarth’s brand power gives dry cleaners an ‘Intel inside’ competitive edge that can help bring a substantially higher percentage of new customers in the door. With the lifetime value of a dry cleaning customer averaging between $4,000 and $7,000, an easily understood and highly marketable brand can be a powerful advantage. Affiliates who market the GreenEarth difference are reporting introductory sales increases anywhere from 10 to 70%, and year-on-year same store sales increases consistently in the double digits. With GreenEarth Cleaning, it’s a whole new equation. Higher sales • Attract new customers, build loyalty and grow piece count. Affiliates who market their difference report double digit sales growth year on year • No need to turn away or send special garments out—an average of three items per week can mean thousands more every year in net sales • Allows more packaged plant operations, which offer more volume potential Lower labor/production costs • Significantly less classification means fewer loads per day and fewer lost/misplaced items than traditional systems • Faster, easier finishing—clothes come out less wrinkled, less linty, and static-free than traditional systems or CO2 systems • Less special handling—no special handling necessary on delicate silks, wedding dresses, beaded gowns • Time saved means more garments can be processed—more profits Lower operating costs • Lower waste hauling costs—up to 70% less waste by volume over traditional systems; some waste haulers offer a savings of 60% over perc and 22% over petroleum on each 55-gallon drum of waste • Lower energy costs: run full loads—more garments cleaned in fewer loads • Combining filter mediums such as activated clays can significantly reduce utility demand for solvent purification—by 85% 8 1
• No need for environmental insurance or worry about future clean up costs • Excellent mileage—Affiliates report on average more than 1200 pounds/gallon • Package plants afford big increases in efficiency • No permitting fees or annual inspections in most air districts; depending upon the landlord, clean up insurance expense may not be necessary Decreased claims expense • Gentle on all fabrics; won’t damage leather trims, rubber backing, decorative trims, beads sequins or polyvinyl; won’t dissolve glue and adhesives • No shrinkage or fading • Minimal damage claim exposure; on average, Affiliates report a 90% reduction in damage claim costs • Recommended by more garment manufacturers than any other solvent Minimize time and hassle on environmental compliance • GreenEarth is not regulated by RCRA, CERCLA, EPA or California Proposition 65 • Officially affirmed by California’s Air Resources Board as an acceptable solvent alternative, and, based on the available exposure information, “the use of D5 in GreenEarth’s patented dry cleaning process will not pose a risk to the public living near businesses using D5” • Significantly less time on environmental and regulatory paperwork and reporting • D5 silicone, per Environment Canada, “does not pose a danger to the environment or its biological diversity” and based on their comprehensive review, “the projected future of siloxane D5 will not pose a danger to the environment or its biological diversity.” Landlord preference • Non-hazardous solvent means no liability issues • Brand appeal builds retail traffic • Renew leases at current locations and obtain leases at locations that previously wouldn’t allow dry cleaners • Greenfield sites can be built to meet the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification specifications • Check with us for a list of landlords that have “preapproved” GreenEarth Cleaning “Current Kimco tenants can continue to use perc until their lease expires. When their lease expires, if tenants desire to remain in the center, they have the option to either convert their business to one of the approved green technologies or convert to a drop-off/pick-up store. The options that are approved for Kimco centers are the GreenEarth Cleaning method...Wet cleaning...and Liquid carbon dioxide process...It is important to note that Kimco does not consider hydrocarbon an acceptable alternative to perc.” Scott Gerber, Kimco Realty blog post 4/24/2012 9 1
“(GreenEarth) as an alternative dry cleaning solvent will not pose adverse health risks to the public . . . ARB sees no need to regulate its use.” California Air Resources Board, 2008 How the GreenEarth Cleaning Affiliate program works. GreenEarth maintains an active, high quality website where customers, potential employees, community partners and potential investors can quickly and easily find out more about your business. With our site behind you, you can project the image and professionalism of a much larger brand. In fact, GreenEarth is the largest retail brand of dry cleaning in the world. • Online store locator. Many consumers today search for information online prior to visiting a brick-and-mortar store. Every GreenEarth Affiliate is listed in our “Find a Store” feature on our website. It directs customers to your store 24/7. We also list our site with many search engines and “green” business directories, and link to a whole host of “green sites” to ensure that consumers know where to find a GreenEarth cleaner. 11 1
Joining our growing network of successful, quality operators After you have had a chance to review this informational packet and conduct some preliminary due diligence, the next step is to talk. We will answer any questions you may have and if you would like to visit some GreenEarth plants in your region, we can help with that too. From our end, we will be looking to make sure that the “fit” is right. Our Affiliates represent the “face” of the GreenEarth brand to the public. You won’t be happy, and neither will we, if we don’t share the same values and commitment to operational excellence. Partnering with like-minded business owners who put customers, quality and environmental responsibility first helps protect your investment and ours. Learn the local regs Your next steps will be to learn about any local regulations you would need to comply with and assess your equipment and supply needs. It is smart to get in touch with your state’s department of environmental protection and with your local fire marshal regarding fire codes. A word about fire codes. There is no one-size-fits-all with fire code compliance; each municipality has its own set of zoning and building codes. What you should know is that although these codes dictate what the standards are, how those standards are met is often a call that can be made by the individual fire marshal. Since their main concern is overall life safety, fire marshals are often willing to work with operators on alternative ways to make a plant safer for the community. Early warning systems and fire walls, for example, help protect people while sprinkler systems protect only equipment and buildings. Machines, detergents, GE and P&G GreenEarth, in partnership with Procter & Gamble and General Electric, both founding members of GreenEarth Cleaning LLC, has conducted extensive testing and optimization of our system. We have developed an approved list of several different machines, detergents and spotting agents that meet our quality standards to make your selection of a quality system easy and keep the prices competitve. You will want to talk with the manufacturing reps of course, but we are happy to co-consult with you on these decisions and share our experience. In no time, the final step The final step is to sign a Letter of Understanding (LOU), a contract that represents your official membership application. After you join the Affiliate Network, you will be contacted by a GreenEarth representative who will help you prepare for start up. The whole process is very simple. You can be an approved GreenEarth operator within weeks! 12 1
“Our business has grown by over 50% and we continue to be amazed at the number of new customers we have each day…we continue to average more than two new customers each day, six days a week. Approximately half of these people were looking for a green dry cleaner.” Joe Peterson, Prestige Cleaning Center Minneapolis, MN “Everything I’d heard about GreenEarth was true. Clothes have no odor at all, very little linting and static electricity, blacks are blacker, colors are deeper, whites are whiter. We’ve been throwing in beads, glued trim, a 50 year old baptism gown, anything and everything and it comes out looking great! Everything just feels softer and drapes nicer. Aside from the more rigid maintenance schedule and being careful not to introduce spotting water into the machine, the training and conversion was a total non-event and much smoother than anticipated.” Andy Lien, Camelot Cleaners Fargo, ND “I really like being a part of the GreenEarth family and I am proud to be an Affiliate. I work hard to differeniate myself and my business and GreenEarth has helped me accomplish that. Having GreenEarth in my plant is more than just which solvent I use. It’s a community, it’s a family, it’s the way I want to do business.” Craig Goulian Emerson Cleaners Emerson, NJ 13 1
