ABOUT HEART HEROES Founded in 2018, Heart Heroes aims to provide subsidised social events for children and their families living with Heart Conditions through donations and fundraising. Bringing everyone together Heart Heroes supports families of children living with Heart Conditions. Our goal is for children and their siblings to be included in all our events, along with parents, grandparents, aunties, uncles and any other close family. Our charity is run solely by volunteers and we are always looking for additional support. Maggie’s story... “My four year old daughter was diagnosed with Tetralogy of Fallot when she was ten days old and required open heart surgery when she was six months old to correct some defects in her heart. She was a poorly baby and was tube fed for eight months of her life. She has since been diagnosed with autism. I recently attended a pottery event organised by Heart Heroes. It was great to be able to meet other families of children with heart conditions and share stories and feelings with people who have been through the same as you. To be able to share frustrations and fears, as well as have fun and make new friends is very much needed. Heart Heroes creates wonderful opportunities for many families for which we are very grateful. It can feel very lonely and isolating having a child who is poorly or who has developmental issues, so to meet families who ‘just get it’ is very comforting and helps you remember you are not on your own”. www.heartheroes.co.uk

FUNDRAISING STORIES SKYDIVE On August 2nd 2020, an elite team of superheroes will don their capes of courage to boldly go where so many would fear… a skydive above the rolling, Devonshire hills. We salute these guardians of goodwill for undertaking this mission. It takes great bravery and fortitude to pursue such a challenge. Our skydiving champions must be praised for their fearless endeavour, but who are the real superheroes amongst us? It must be those that achieve the extraordinary… every day. Those that are born with obstacles in their path, but show astonishing courage to overcome them and carry on regardless. These are the superheroes that we must celebrate and applaud. Congenital heart disease (CHD) is one of the most common types of birth defect, affecting up to 8 in every 1,000 babies born in the UK. To you and I, that’s 8 superheroes that need a little help from us. Children with CHD have the same needs as any other child. They face challenges, such as making friends, understanding their body as they grow, school, play and where they fit in society. In addition, however, children with CHD/heart conditions must navigate a parallel world; a world of cardiologists, echocardiograms, electrocardiograms, pacemakers, defibrillators and regular surgery. No matter how strong their superpowers may be, they need our support to help negotiate this maze of medical intervention and find happiness in the world outside. At Heart Heroes, we have the power to make that difference. With your help, we support families of children living with CHD/Heart conditions through a range of family events, fun activities and play therapy. Together, we can help our Heart superheroes soar to the heights of happiness and joy that they deserve. www.heartheroes.co.uk
FUNDRAISING STORIES CAKE SALE My Family and I have benefited from support through Heart Heroes. So baking being my Hobby I decided I would hold a Cake Sale at our local Co-op supermarket to raise funds and give back to this wonderful local charity. First of all I asked the co-op manager if I could use his store for my sale & which day did he think would be best, surprisingly he said a Tuesday because it was pensioners discount day. Then I asked another Heart Hero Mum if she could help me run the sale, so once decided upon the date, I then went about asking my friends, work colleagues & local businesses for cake donations. Nearer the time of the sale, we started advertising our sale on Facebook, I asked my friends to share the date of the sale on their Facebook pages to raise awareness. And I also asked my work Tewkesbury Garden Centre/ Browns Garden Restaurant to share on their business pages as well. Not only did my lovely manager share the details of the sale on her page, she also said that however much I raised from the cake sale, she would match through Tewkesbury Garden Centre. I also put posters around our local shops & schools advertising the sale. It was very successful and I can’t wait to hold another sale, bigger and better www.heartheroes.co.uk
