Acquafredda di Maratea – Potenza – Italy September 24 – 30, 2009 THE MARATEA CONFERENCES ON FUNCTIONAL ANALYSIS AND APPROXIMATION THEORY from 1989 to 2009 An overview Edited by the Organizing Committee of the 6th International Conference on Functional Analysis and Approximation Theory – FAAT 2009
Preface The memories are a way to meet up again (Kahlil Gibran) The project of organizing an international Conference on Functional Analysis and Approximation Theory grew out from a felicitous hunch of Francesco Altomare and Giuseppe Mastroianni in 1987 when, coming from the Universities of Napoli and Bari, respectively, they got a professorship at the new University of Basilicata, in Potenza. Soon involved in that project, Michele Campiti and Biancamaria Della Vecchia participated enthusiastically in the initiative by offering their invaluable collaboration. The main aim of the Conference was to bring together both experienced scientists and young researchers in Functional Analysis and Approximation Theory. This was meant to promote joint researches in these fields and to encourage possible applications in other fields of Mathematics which are closer to applied sciences such as partial differential equations, integral equations, numerical analysis and stochastic analysis. The deep connections between Functional Analysis and Approximation Theory are well established. Roughly speaking, Functional Analysis as well as Operator Theory provide general methods and tools to focus and to solve several problems arising from Approximation Theory: density theorems, approximation by (positive) operators, best approximation, approximation in normed spaces, fixed point theorems, Hilbert spaces methods, Banach spaces and Banach algebras methods, function spaces, saturation, operator semigroups and so on. According to Felix E. Browder, we may say that “the role of Functional Analysis has been decisive exactly in connection with classical problems. Almost all problems are on the applications, where Functional Analysis enables one to focus on a specific set of concrete analytical tasks and organize material in a clear and transparent form so that you know what the difficulties are”. At that time, in Italy, apart from some outstanding but isolated scholars, there wasn’t any well established schools in Functional Analysis nor in 3
Approximation Theory. Hence we planned to organize a scientific meeting, also in order to create good opportunities for useful exchanges of ideas, fruitful collaborations and aggregations between young and old researchers in those fields. Under these auspices, the first Maratea Conference was held in 1989, from September 10 to September 15, in the wonderful resort of Acquafredda di Maratea. The Conference was highly appreciated and there were about 140 participants. As a result, we were encouraged to carry on our scientific project. After 1989 we organized four other editions in 1992, 1996, 2000, 2004 at the same place and in each of them we had a high number of participants. This demonstrated the great interest in the topics treated in the Maratea Conferences. For each edition we published a Proceedings volume which collects papers related to the main lectures and the research talks delivered during the conference. The first one was published as a Supplement of "Atti del Seminario Matematico e Fisico dell'Università di Modena" and each of the other ones as a Supplement of "Rendiconti del Circolo Matematico di Palermo". Following this tradition, we decided to organize the 6th edition of the Maratea Conference this year, exactly twenty years after the first edition. On this occasion, we also decided to prepare the present booklet containing the program, the list of participants and the titles of the papers published in the Proceedings of each edition. Also, it includes a DVD with several photographs of the participants. This booklet is intended to celebrate somehow the 20th anniversary of the first edition, by collecting a few notable aspects of the previous editions of the Maratea Conference. On this occasion we would like to acknowledge the generous efforts of all people involved in the organization, through the years. To all of them we express our special thanks. To live in the past doesn't always pay off; yet, memories can help pointing out effective improvements and directions for a better future. The Organizing Committee of the 6th International Conference on Functional Analysis and Approximation Theory 4
