From the Performing Arts Department Itinerant Concerts Dear Parents of students involved in the Itinerant Music and/or Speech and Drama lessons at Southwell, Thank you for investing in your child's education by learning a musical instrument at Southwell School. Music and speech and drama tuition can be very rewarding and we hope that all is going well with your child's lessons so far. Every year in Term 4 we celebrate students' instrumental and vocal achievements by holding a concert. We will be holding concerts across five evenings, to enable more children to enjoy the benefits of performing in front of an audience. It is not compulsory for your child to play at these concerts, so during the first few weeks of Term 4, your child’s itinerant music teacher/speech and drama teacher will talk to your child to ascertain whether or not they would like to perform. If your child attends lessons outside of Southwell you are still welcome to play, please contact me to be included in the programme. The concerts will be held over five days. Speech and Drama will be held on Friday 6th November of week 4. Juniors will be 4pm till 5.30pm and Seniors 6pm till 8pm in the PAC. During week 6 of Term 4 we will hold the itinerant music concerts. These concerts will begin promptly at 6pm and students are required from 5.45pm for warming up and tuning. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s music or speech and drama tutor, or myself. Julia McIntyre Director of Music julia.mcintyre@southwell.school.nz
From Performing Arts Southwell School Jazz Band is excited to be joining with the Hamilton Big Band to perform a public concert at Southwell School on Sunday 22 November, at 2:30pm. This will be held in the Foyer of the Performing Arts Centre. Tea and coffee to follow the concert. From the Library We are rocking and rolling in the library for the start of Term 4, which will whizz by. We have stocktake in Week 5, and that is when we hope to rediscover some of the books which are AWOL. If your child has one of these AWOL books, cross your fingers that it turns up. If it doesn't... they will need to keep looking! Leaving students will be charged for missing books at the end of the year. Returning students have the holidays to have a really good look for the book(s) - they often reappear!! Scan this QR Code to link to the podcast Book Club for Kids and hear Kitty Felde interview students about the amazing Maniac Magee by Jerry Spinelli, which we have in our library in the Realistic section and also on the Wheelers audio platform. Do you live near the Glenview Library? Head there on Tuesday afternoons to read to a dog. Click HERE for more info. And you can celebrate all things Harry Potter at the HCL on November 14. Wave your wand HERE for more info.
Archives Opera Advertising (circa 1960s-70s) Before opera opening nights, Southwell would have lots of big photographs taken (some made into posters) to be used as advertisements. Mrs Irene Sergel (wife of Headmaster Paul Sergel) used to take a huge handful and walk up both sides of Victoria Street putting photos and posters in shop windows.
From the Nurse Sick Pupil Guidelines In order for pupils to gain maximum learning they need to be well. Often a pupil who seemed well at home, can find it difficult to cope with the focus required whilst at school. Guidelines 1. Parents need to have: An alternative person available should your child be unwell and unable to care for him/her. Your alternative person’s contact details should be up to date and given to the Administration Staff. 2. In consideration of other pupils and staff at Southwell School the following criteria has been developed: ILLNESS RECOMMENDED RECOVERY TIME Vomiting Until 24 hours after LAST vomit Diarrhoea Until 24 hours after last runny bowel motion Conjunctivitis Until eye discharge has ceased Measles For at least four days after onset of rash Whooping Cough For five days after antibiotic treatment com- Mumps For nine days or until swelling has gone Chicken Pox For seven days from the onset of the rash/scabs are dry School Sores Until 24 hours after antibiotics started Streptococcal throat For 24 hours from commencement of treatment These guidelines have been developed to ensure the pupil is completely well before returning to school and therefore less likely to become unwell again. The guidelines are also in place to protect other pupils and the staff at Southwell School. 3. Medication: If your child requires medication to be administered during the school day, please can you bring it to school in the container it has been dispensed in by the pharmacy (legal requirement for the School Nurse) – it is helpful if the pharmacy can dispense into two lots (one for school and one for home). On the first day the medication is to be given at school you will need to complete a “Medication Request” form – available from the office or the clinic. 4. Nut Allergy: We have pupils who are ANAPHYLACTIC if they have nuts. Some of these pupils are anaphylactic even if they are exposed to nuts (peanuts in particular). They do not have a minor reaction, but a serious reaction which they can die from. These pupils all have EpiPens (pre-packaged adrenaline) at school with them, because of the serious nature of their allergy. We ask that you avoid sending food to school which contains nuts e.g. mixed nuts, muesli bars, peanut butter sandwiches, nutella sandwiches etc. 5. Summer Hats: Hats are to be brought to school every day during Terms 1 and 4. Please keep this for future reference. Thank you for your support
The Southwell School Super Spring Cricket Bash Kick off the new Cricket season with a fun day out at the fifth annual Super Spring Cricket Bash. This one-day tournament is free and is purely for fun. Bring the whole family! It’s open to all skill levels and is all about celebrating our school history, utilizing our fantastic grounds and enjoying a day of friendly competition with the wider Southwell community. Teams are sorted into Old Boys and Girls, Teachers, Parents and Students who will square off in Kiwi Cricket style games, with a soft ball and relaxed rules. So don’t worry if you’re not as handy with a bat as you used to be… it’s all about fun, banter and playing to win the coveted Major Gay Medal. Major Gay was an icon of Southwell School, teaching here from 1965-1989. The Major had two great loves: The Army and Cricket. He fought in WWII, was awarded the Military Cross and later played first class cricket in Eng- land. He qualified to teach cricket from the home of cricket, Marylebone Cricket Club, which was a great ad- vantage to cricket players of Southwell School. Upon retirement, the Major was awarded an Honorary membership to the Southwell Old Boys and Girls associa- tion and was made a Fellow of Southwell School. We continue to celebrate his valuable contribution with the Ma- jor Gay Medal Fun Cricket Tournament. To register, please fill in the online registration form via this link

Online Safety for Parents All social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter and YouTube have a minimum age limit of 13+. While we recommend that young people are not on social media before they are ready, we also know that there is often pressure for them to become active in these spaces earlier. If they are interacting in these spaces before they are 13, it's always better that they’re open and honest with you about using an app or site, rather than doing it behind your back. This way, you can help them make safe and responsible choices online. Here are Netsafe’s top tips for setting up social media accounts for your child: Teach the online safety basics: Make sure you’ve taught them the skills they need to make safe choices online. This includes how to set up a strong password, what information they need to protect online, what is appropriate online behaviour and what they should do if they need help or if something makes them uncomfortable or upset. Help with the set up: If possible, set up the account together, using your email account and their actual age. This will help to limit the inappropriate content they see. Pay particular attention to the privacy settings when signing up and put aside time to when you can both explore the settings and functionality of the platform together. Set boundaries and expectations: Sit together and come up with expectations around behaviour, screentime, privacy, who they will connect with and what can be shared. Let them know that you will be a ‘friend’ or you will ‘follow’ them – it is important to be transparent about this and ensure this expectation is in place from the beginning. Make sure you help them to have a plan in place should something not go as expected. What should they do if something happens online that makes them feel uncomfortable? Check-in: Research shows that parents are critical to the success of young people becoming safe, confident and capable in their use of digital technology. Regular proactive conversations at home helps to minimise the damage if things do go wrong online. It’s important to let your child know that they can talk to you about anything that happens to them online and that you’ll be there to support them no matter what. Teach them about the safety tools available: Most social networks include tools to block, report or remove harmful content. Make sure they know how to use these to keep themselves safe.
