March 2022 | Volume 61 | Issue 3 A Monthly Publication of Methodist Village Senior Living FROM THE DESK OF OUR CEO... Residents, Families, and Teammates, “Winds of March, we welcome you. There is work for you to do. Work and play and blow all day. Blow the winter cold away.” How many of you heard this growing up? My grandmother would often say this very thing to me as a child. I am hoping the bitter winds of March will blow away soon! We are excited to announce we have met our Mabee Foundation Challenge Grant! Thank you to our families, friends, donors, and employees! YOU are the reason we were able to raise the funds for the challenge and YOU are the reason we are receiving the grant. Every donation, large or small counted! This grant will help us with the much-needed renovation to the exterior of the Care Center. It is not only important to us that we give the best care, but we also want our residents to feel safe, secure, and to be proud of where they live. It is important to MVSL to maintain our community inside and out. We will continue to raise funds to beautify the homes of our residents! On another note, knock on wood, it looks like this latest variant of Covid has run its course in our area. However, we must still follow the guidelines of CMS, CDC, and ADH. You MUST always wear an approved mask in our communities, and you MUST use good hand hygiene. Please help us keep our residents healthy and keep our employees at work. Please understand if you are asked to put a mask on and use hand sanitizer before visiting your loved one. On a final note, I want to give a HUGE shoutout to employees across the MVSL campus that have gone above and beyond to make arrangements to come to work during the inclement weather. Some of our employees have spent nights here to make sure our residents receive the care they deserve. THANK YOU for the love and dedication you have for our residents! Looking forward to warmer days! Melissa

FROM THE DESK OF OUR CARE CENTER ADMINISTRATOR Spring is almost here. The days will grow longer and the weather will begin to warm. Soon you will see the flowers begin to bloom and the trees will begin to bud. Birds will build their nest for their new families. Gardeners will begin to prepare their beds for the vegetables and flowers they will soon plant. I have always thought of spring as a time for new beginnings. It’s a time of change. The season is not the only thing changing. We have some new projects at Methodist also. We are beginning to work with TMF, a quality innovation network, on staff turnover due to burnout. We are hoping to identify some of the reasons for turnover and correct them. We also want to recognize the signs of staff burnout and assist them with getting through those tough times. We also have a couple of other projects for later in the spring. We are looking for ways to improve not only the lives of our residents, but the work life of our staff. There is definite correlation between the two. We welcome any input that the families, residents or staff may have to offer. I love Spring because the beautiful flowers come to surface. Pretty soon with the warmer weather approaching we are going to be going outside for activities and this is an exciting change for our residents. This month is National Nutrition Month. Our Dietician, Kim Foster, reached out to me asking if she could do a Nutrition activity with you on March 4th and 18th. Nutrition is so important in our everyday lives. I can’t wait to see what activities she has planned for you. March Madness starts this Month. If you’re a basketball fan we are doing a March Madness bracket on March 11th. James P. kept up with the brackets for me last year and will be doing it again this year. Thank you James! CAMPUS EDUCATION DIRECTOR Hello all! What a month February was…snow and ice and cold, oh my! I have to say I am glad it has passed. Soon we will begin to see the first signs of Spring, and I have to say I am looking forward to that. This Spring will also bring some changes in the Education Department. Construction is going well on the new Training Center, and I am very excited for its completion. More space = more opportunities to provide training to our employees. MVSL is committed to ensuring all employees have the skill and education necessary to provide our residents with the best possible care. Through monthly on-line in-services and in- person training, we try very hard to stay up to date with any new rules or regulations, as well as new approaches, in providing that care. Employee classes available in March: Dementia Training, begins 03/02/22; Skin Care and Pressure Ulcer Prevention Training, date to be announced. If interested in one of these classes, please see your supervisor for enrollment. Blessings-- MeLynnda Dunn, LPN CDP CADDCT
FROM THE DESK OF OUR AL/ASCU ADMINISTRATOR Happy March Everyone! Although the River Valley looks beautiful covered in snow and curling up on the couch with hot chocolate is the perfect way to end the day, I think it is safe to say we are all looking forward to Spring! I look most forward to flowers blooming, new life, and the fresh air that comes with the warmer weather. Some of my most cherished memories come from watching the jonquils blossom on the farm in my hometown and picking them for my parents. We are excited to reminisce with our residents and learn about their favorite memories. With Love—Sarah Tisdale, Administrator AL/ASCU
FROM THE DESK OF OUR AL/ASCU LIFE ENRICHMENT TEAM Hello Residents, Friends and Family, Spring is here! I always love the energy spring brings! I hope it renews your spirit to see new beginnings and life. We have a very busy month ahead of us! I want us to be outside as much as possible! Spring is a wonderful time to try new things and be inspired! I am so thrilled to have Syra Baker officially join the activities department! She has such a passion for our residents and brings them so much joy. I am so thankful for our AL/ASCU staff, they go above and beyond to assist with activities and make Methodist truly feel like home. We have Mardi Gras kicking off this month! We will also be making march madness brackets and trying to hoop ourselves! Of course, we will be celebrating St. Patrick’s day! I am looking forward to this season with you all and as always if you need anything don’t hesitate to reach out! With love – Jamie Jackson, Activity Director AL/ASCU With winter's footprints in the past, and snows begin to melt at last. With longer days and shorter nights, the wayward winds of March take flight. Four winds she holds within her grip, then hurls them from her fingertip. Her woolly, fleecy clouds of white, she sets in skies of blue delight. Her wild bouts of gusty breezes roar through valleys, hills, and trees. That high pitch whistling song she sings awakens earth and flowering things. ~Patricia L. Cisco

What Your Therapy Team Can Do For You Although many people see therapists as a stand alone department, therapists work closely with nursing and staff. It is commonly forgotten that therapists can: • Assist with fall prevention—educating residents and staff about environmental hazards that may precipitate falls, methods to prevent falls, and identify weaknesses/areas of concern that may contribute to falls • Dementia management—therapists view dementia from the functional point of view and can help staff determine possible causes of dementia-related “behaviors” and interventions to address them to improve the resident's function and quality of life • Restraint reduction—therapists have worked hard in conjunction with Methodist to make it a restraint free facility by assisting nursing to determine the most appropriate positioning devices and equipment for residents to avoid the use of restraints • Contracture management---working with staff and residents to develop range of motion programs, identify the need for splinting, etc. in an effort to prevent the development of or further progression of contractures to decrease pain and increase function for our residents • Positioning programs—work with staff to provide optimal positioning for residents to improve function, increase comfort, and obtain optimal posture for our residents • Weight loss intervention—therapists can work to determine if a physical or cognitive change has resulted in feeding abilities or if a diet change is needed Therapy in a skilled nursing facility has a very holistic approach as we are fortunate enough to be able to take into account multiple comorbidities (multiple illnesses/conditions) and see how they interact to impact resident's function. We also have a strong relationship with members of our interdisciplinary team (nurses, CNAs, physicians, etc.). By working closely together, the staff at Methodist ensure that your loved ones receive the very best care they can get.
