WELCOME “ Congratulations on your decision to study Philosophy at the Institute of Philosophy (HIW). Alongside 900 fellow students, 40 professors and more than 100 administrative and research staff members, you will be part of the community of Leuven philosophers, with different backgrounds and interests, but with one common goal: to reflect together critically. The HIW is a place where students and professors from more than 60 different countries meet: from the US and Nigeria to China, from New Zealand and Mexico to India. It’s an ongoing interaction between different cultural and philosophical traditions. In the seclusion of our city campus you will find a green oasis, a garden in which Philosophy has been able to flourish since a very long time. Philosophy requires study and studying is serious work. But our professors, staff and all fellow students are there for you, even if things get harder. Do not hesitate to lean on them, and of course you yourself can also contribute to the community at our faculty. We wish you a successful and productive academic career on behalf of the entire HIW! Good luck. Gerd Van Riel, Dean - Institute of Philosophy
FRESHERS’ DAYS KU Leuven and the Institute of Philosophy welcome their students this academic year with Freshers’ Days. During this week, new students get acquainted with philosophy, but also with each other. It’s the start of a learning process that we will journey together. By following a lecture and all kinds of workshops you will get an idea of what your education at the HIW entails and which skills you need as a philosophy student. In one of the first few weeks we will also arrange an individual meeting, so we can have a look at your learning trajectory. All new bachelor students take part in the programme, which can be found in this brochure. In these first days of the academic year we are not only welcoming new bachelor students. From day one there are information sessions planned, also for the senior students. An overview of the entire programme can be found on our website. We end the first day of the academic year in student restaurant Alma, where the HIW treats all philosophy students to a meal. This brochure summarizes all the information you need to get started. Be sure to check the schedule to see when and where you are expected. The brochure also gives an overview of other important dates on the academic calendar. You will find out more about the student services v.u.: G. Van Riel of the HIW and the NFK student association. They will be your first help with questions, problems and need for relaxation (the latter mainly at NFK). At the end of the brochure we collect some FYIs: a list of interesting facts for the coming academic year. 5

FYI The Permanent Teaching Committee (POC) meets about 4 times a year to coordinate and evaluate the programmes of the HIW. A large part of the POC consists of student representatives. NFK organises a meeting prior to the POC to which all HIW students are invited. Would you like to become a student representative or get involved in the representation? Contact NFK education: education@nfk.be. On Facebook you will find groups of the different programmes where information about courses is shared. There is also a group ‘Philosophy Students KU Leuven’ that brings together all philosophy students, including alumni. The HIW encourages reading groups amongst students. Professors and researchers often join or supervise them. On the website of the HIW you will find a manual for starting such a reading group. The buddy programme of KU Leuven brings local and international students together. If you would like to have buddy, apply here: https://www.kuleuven.be/ english/studentservices/orientationdays/buddy. The Graduate Student Conference takes places after the Easter break. (Research) Master students can present their research to each other here. The conference is for all (Research) Master students, so keep an eye on the call for papers (January). The Student Career Centre is a service for all KU Leuven students. They offer an extensive database of student jobs, but they can also help you with a study relevant job or an internship: https://www.kuleuven.be/english/studentservices/ studentcareercenter. Are you excited about going abroad? During your study at the HIW you can go on an exchange to different countries within the framework of Erasmus+! More information on https://hiw.kuleuven.be/en/ study/study-abroad. In the weekend of 15-16 May 2020, we celebrate 50 years of international programmes at the Institute of Philosophy, together with alumni, international speakers and all staff members.
