It’s mid-January already and that means two things. Firstly, Dry January is
half gone, and secondly the days are slowly but surely getting longer. This is
good news for all Craft beer lovers, especially us at TWICB, as we’ll soon be
venturing out and about again, passions reawakened, for the pleasure that
comes with visiting taprooms and attending great beer festivals, whenever
                                           we get the chance.

UK CRAFT BEER RELEASES
           10-16 January 2022

Beak Brewery
Locals V5
6% IPA
This version of Locals features a hefty addition of Australian hop variety Ella. It is
popping with ripe tropical fruit character, which rounds-out the zippier Chenin Blanc
flavours of Nelson Sauvin.

Polly’s Brew Co.
Hold Fast Drifting
6.2% IPA
A special tribute to Idaho 7 - utilizing not only T90 pellets, but a newly acquired Cryo
hop version to boot. An IPA that is positively dripping with fresh cut pineapple notes,
with apricot, papaya and red grapefruit to round off the tropical punchbowl of
flavour. With finishing notes of black tea and pungent pine notes aplenty.

Polly’s Brew Co.
Goldroom
5.6% Pale Ale
A sensible pint smasher brewed with the classic hop pairing of Mosaic and Simcoe.
Straight up juicy naughtiness that drinks way lower than its ABV suggests.

Polly’s Brew Co.
Distinct Kingdoms
5.5% Pale Ale
Mosaic in the whirlpool, bitterness is all but a whisper in this beer. A dry-hop charge of
Idaho 7 and more Mosaic to bring a certified swag bag of mango, peach and blueberry
notes, before Idaho 7 takes the reins with a metric ton of juicy tropical notes, with
stone fruits and sticky pine, before fainter notes of black tea round things off.

Salopian Brewery
Honest Words
5.9% NEIPA
A forthright IPA laden with Citra and Idaho 7. Bright gold in appearance, it's a perfectly
balanced mix of Amarillo, Citra, and Idaho 7. Crisp fruit follows an intense aroma of
mango and lemon that's chased by a forthright bitter finish.

Deviant & Dandy Brewery
No Figgity Barrel Aged
10% Imperial Stout
Their 'No Figgity' Imperial Stout barrel aged in rum barrels for 9 months. Aromas of fig,
chocolate, vanilla and caramel lead to a complex malt bill with flavours of toffee,
chocolate, vanilla and a subtle roast character. Dark in colour, with a thick oily
mouthfeel and a hint of warming alcohol.

                                                                                  3

Bloom Tone Pact
0.5% Low-Alcohol Beer
Made with Citra and Strata. A bright, hazy gold that offers a surprisingly heady hop

taproom REVIEW
Fownes Brewery, Unit 2, Two Woods Estate, Talbots Lane, Brierley Hill, West Midlands DY5 2YX

                                    Guest Review by Steve James

EVERY GREAT SAGA STARTS WITH A BEER!

Fownes is a 3-barrel brewery established in 2012 by brothers James & Tom Fownes. They have the aim
of bringing together finely crafted ales and porters with storytelling of epic proportions, with a quest to
deliver epic Dwarfen Ales that take pride in our heritage whilst embracing innovation. Their beers are
based on the Dwarfen fantasy and the world of King Korvak and his new brewmaster, Broddr Firebeard.
The Dwarfen Brewery was originally established at the Jolly Crispin pub in Upper Gornal, but moved to
Brierley Hill at the end of 2019.

Their wide range of beers cater for every kind of palette, from light hoppy beers and citrus-flavoured
pale ales, to award-winning dark ales, porters and stouts. The most popular and award-winning beers
are King Korvaks’s Saga (which ranges up to 9%!) and The Elephant Riders – a stampeding pale ale
with a large dose of Mosaic hops. Other beers include Iron Tusk Dwarfen Mild (4%), Korvak’s Resto-
ration Milk Stout (4.2%), Upper Gornal Pale Ale (4.2%), Frost Hammer Pale Ale (4.6%) and Visions of
Heresy Rye IPA (5.7%). Most beers are available in cask form, but some are also in craft keg form or in
bottles, for collection from the brewery or home delivery.

The taproom forms part of the brewery – you’re actually sitting in it! The seats are made from old key-
keg casks, arranged around wooden tables and beer barrels. When we visited last December, four keg
beers and one cask ale were available, including special seasonal beers which had just been brewed.
I must say that a glass of Hand of Doom IPA (8%) was deliciously smooth and dangerously drinkable!
And a glass of Frost Hammer hit the spot as an excellent Christmas Pale Ale. We found the taproom to
be welcoming and friendly, with several groups of “regular” customers. The Fownes brothers usually
serve the beers in individual glasses. The taproom is usually open on the last Saturday of the month,
but you should check opening times with the brewery (07790-766844).

                                                                                                   15
The brewery and taproom can be found on an
industrial estate just off Mount Pleasant, between
Quarry Bank and Brierley Hill. Regular bus ser-
vices are available and the nearest railway station
is at Cradley Heath. Another reason for visiting
Fownes brewery is that just along the street is
the Bull & Bladder (or strictly-speaking, the Vine),
which is the taphouse for the local Batham’s brew-
ery.

Fownes have recently acquired their own pub in
Burton-upon-Trent – The Old Royal Oak in Mar-
ket Place. Their draught beers are also regularly
available in local bars and micro-pubs, including
the Oil Basin Brewhouse in Worcester, Wellington
in Bennetts Hill, Birmingham, Weavers and Bear &
Wolf in Kidderminster, and Bird in Hand at Word-
sley.

Enjoy the Dwarfen saga!

PATREON ANNOUNCEMENT
                                           Discover the benefits of membership

When we launched This Week in Craft Beer in January 2020, we were blissfully
unaware of what lay ahead of us! Considering the obstacles, we have all faced, we
are proud of what we managed to accomplish in our first year.

However, we have lots more that we want to do in 2021! In order to fund these
activities and to enable our Community to get more involved with the creative
process at TWICB, we have launched a Patreon Membership Programme.

Full details of how you can get involved starting at less than the cost of a half-decent can of beer per
month, can be found at patreon.com/thisweekincraftbeer.

Don't worry, our weekly Newsletter and Podcast will continue to be FREE FOR EVERYONE! The Patreon
Membership offers access to range of brand new TWICB Products and Services. Please check it out and
let us know what you think?!

www.thisweekincraft.beer/patreon

Q. Why are you starting to charge for things that we have enjoyed for free all this year?
A. We aren't! The weekly Newsletter and weekly Brewer-interview Podcast will continue to be free to everyone. Patreon will
enable us to offer brand-new additional products and services to Members.

Q. What's this about Members getting involved with TWICB?
A. We have been amazed and delighted with the amount of engagement and feedback we have received during our first year, via
social media, email etc. The UK Craft Beer Community is clearly engaged, knowledgeable and sociable! We want to provide a
mechanism for bringing the community into our creative process, allowing people to participate in the planning, research,
production and delivery of our products.

Q. Why do you have to charge for things?
A. TWICB is run by just two people: Rob and Steve. Whilst it is undoubtedly a labour of love, it has developed into something that
consumes a significant part of our working weeks. Steve works mainly on the Newsletter, where the New Beers Section alone
takes many hours per week, to research, collate and format. Rob works mainly on the podcast, where each episode takes several
hours to schedule, research, record, edit and promote. Whilst we will continue to invest this time to produce the free products, we
think Patreon could be a great way of funding the time and effort that we want to devote to developing new products and
services.

Q. Apart from your time, what specifically will the Patreon proceeds be used to fund?
A. As soon as the COVID-19 situation permits, we want to take the podcast on the road, to record Brewer interviews at their own
Taprooms, as well as record live segments at Festivals, Tap-Takeovers and other beery events of note. In order to provide a quality
finished audio product, we will need to invest in some decent mobile recording equipment, not to mention the cost of travelling
the length and breadth of Britain in the pursuit of great interviews!

Q. What is the thought process behind the bundles of Patreon Membership bonuses that you are offering?
A. We have tried to come up with bundles that combine some community benefits, exclusive digital products, exclusive physical
products, invites to exclusive TWICB events, discounts on TWICB Grand Tours and opportunities to participate in the TWICB
creative process. We have tried to price each Membership Level so that each offers outstanding value for money. We have also
tried to be mindful of the number of Patreon members that we can realistically include in each bonus activity. (Clearly the invite to
participate in the podcast interview or attend the TWICB "Board Meeting" needs to be strictly limited in numbers, or else the bonus
would cease to be "exclusive” and would risk disrupting the actual process itself.)

Q. Are the Membership Benefits and Levels set in stone?
A. Of course not! We are literally making this up as we go along currently! We would love to get your feedback on the Levels, the
Benefits, and indeed the very idea of using Patreon in the first place! Please hit us up on IG (@thisweekincraft.beer) or via email
rob@thisweekincraft.beer. We confidently expect to need to adjust the Patreon model as we go along, based on feedback.

Q. Is this like a Gym membership, where I sign up in January, and then regret it for the rest of the year?!
A. Definitely Not! Membership is month-to-month and you can cancel your membership at any time. Only caveat here is that
certain Member Benefits (mainly those ones that involve a significant cost for us to provide to you) are only unlocked after three
or six months at a certain tier.
