FRESH BEER Catch up on the latest UK Craft Beer releases BREWER’S CORNER The latest news from the Craft Beer Industry TWICB PODCAST Rob chats with Ben and Jacob from 360 Degrees Brewing Co. 104 ISSUE ONE HUNDRED AND FOUR FEBRUARY 28th 2022
ISSUE 104 - 28 FEBRUARY 2022 Welcome to Issue 104. We’ve plenty of great new Craft Beer releases again this week, and are busy making plans to visit many of the beer festivals already announced for the year ahead. In addition, we feel an urgent need to visit as many Tap Rooms as we can feasibly get away with! We’re also very happy to announce that, now all the Covid restrictions have finally been lifted, we’ll be going ahead with our Grand Beer Tours in the coming months. Several renowned Brewers are already signed up to join us on trips to New York and New England later in the year, so we hope you’ll get planning to join them and us for some great Craft Beer adventures. First up is an iconic trip to Brussels in June, hosted by TWICB and Ross from Alpha Delta who knows the area well. We’re stoked this is finally going to happen after all the delays and cancellations caused by the pandemic. To find out more see page19 in this newsletter or visit our website. We’d love to have you along. That roasty base then comes back and settles down with the fruits for a lasting finish. Boundary Brewing Trees We Didn’t Plant 4.3% Pale Ale A Pale Ale dry hopped with Citra & Azacca. This is clean, crisp, tasty but light - a lovely balanced example of the style. Expect a super pale, super hazy hoppy cask beer with a body to back it up. Polly’s Brew Co. Retrorenegade 8.9% DDH DIPA A frankly insane 34.5g/l dry-hopping rate on this beer. Loaded with Idaho 7, Mosaic, Talus, and Nelson Sauvin for a full-on flavour explosion of stone fruits, mango, papaya, and dank, sticky, pine notes to finish. An intense experience from start to finish, and not for the faint of heart. Polly’s Brew Co. Beginning Futures 5.5% DDH Pale Ale A baby addition of Talus brings gentle pink grapefruit, dried roses, citrus rind and the slightest whisper of sage herbal complexity, before equal 20kg additions of Mosaic and Idaho 7 bring the Polly’s new school juice to the table. Taking this to an extra level with Simcoe Cryo in the whirlpool to bring a crisp bitterness to this beer, whilst maintaining the ultra-fluffiness. Polly’s Brew Co. Reform Repeat 6.5% IPA Expect the usual tangerine, bubblegum and berry medley notes of in-house favourite Mosaic, paired up with strong citrus, cedar, and papaya notes from the often under looked Ekuanot. BREWERS CORNER Just when you thought the news from Ukraine couldn’t get any worse, the Drinks Business pointed out that Ukraine produces 18% of the global barley crop, so it seems inevitable that this will signifi- cantly increase malt prices this year. https://www.thedrinksbusiness.com/2022/02/beer-companies-to- face-barley-price-hike-as-russia-ukraine-crisis-spirals/ The Pub Curmudgeon does a great job at looking at drinks in- dustry news from a different perspective. This week he has some wise words about lazy journalism. https://pubcurmudgeon.blogspot.com/ Meanwhile, the Brewers Association updated their Beer Style guidelines this week, to include several new styles and descrip- tors. https://brewpublic.com/beer-brewing/brewers-association-up- dates-beer-style-guidelines-to-add-clarity-across-multiple-cate- gories/ Finally, on the subject of lazy journalism, the Morning Advertiser points out the clear and obvious, in that beer will soon approach £10 a pint if inflation continues at current high levels. Not exactly news in Craft Beer circles! https://www.morningadvertiser.co.uk/Article/2022/02/22/aver- age-cost-of-a-pint-could-rise-to-more-than-10-by-2030 Yesterday evening your faithful correspondent sampled a superb Evil Twin Imperial Stout in a local Taproom, which cost the equivalent of £19.50 a pint - it was worth every penny! 15

PATREON Discover the benefits of membership When we launched This Week in Craft Beer in January 2020, we were blissfully unaware of what lay ahead of us! Considering the obstacles, we have all faced, we are proud of what we managed to accomplish in our first year. However, we have lots more that we want to do in 2022! In order to fund these activities and to enable our Community to get more involved with the creative process at TWICB, we have launched a Patreon Membership Programme. Full details of how you can get involved starting at less than the cost of a half-decent can of beer per month, can be found at patreon.com/thisweekincraftbeer. Don't worry, our weekly Newsletter and Podcast will continue to be FREE FOR EVERYONE! The Patreon Membership offers access to range of brand new TWICB Products and Services. Please check it out and let us know what you think?! www.thisweekincraft.beer/patreon Q. Why are you starting to charge for things that we have enjoyed for free all this year? A. We aren't! The weekly Newsletter and weekly Brewer-interview Podcast will continue to be free to everyone. Patreon will enable us to offer brand-new additional products and services to Members. Q. What's this about Members getting involved with TWICB? A. We have been amazed and delighted with the amount of engagement and feedback we have received during our first year, via social media, email etc. The UK Craft Beer Community is clearly engaged, knowledgeable and sociable! We want to provide a mechanism for bringing the community into our creative process, allowing people to participate in the planning, research, production and delivery of our products. Q. Why do you have to charge for things? A. TWICB is run by just two people: Rob and Steve. Whilst it is undoubtedly a labour of love, it has developed into something that consumes a significant part of our working weeks. Steve works mainly on the Newsletter, where the New Beers Section alone takes many hours per week, to research, collate and format. Rob works mainly on the podcast, where each episode takes several hours to schedule, research, record, edit and promote. Whilst we will continue to invest this time to produce the free products, we think Patreon could be a great way of funding the time and effort that we want to devote to developing new products and services. Q. Apart from your time, what specifically will the Patreon proceeds be used to fund? A. As soon as the COVID-19 situation permits, we want to take the podcast on the road, to record Brewer interviews at their own Taprooms, as well as record live segments at Festivals, Tap-Takeovers and other beery events of note. In order to provide a quality finished audio product, we will need to invest in some decent mobile recording equipment, not to mention the cost of travelling the length and breadth of Britain in the pursuit of great interviews! Q. What is the thought process behind the bundles of Patreon Membership bonuses that you are offering? A. We have tried to come up with bundles that combine some community benefits, exclusive digital products, exclusive physical products, invites to exclusive TWICB events, discounts on TWICB Grand Tours and opportunities to participate in the TWICB creative process. We have tried to price each Membership Level so that each offers outstanding value for money. We have also tried to be mindful of the number of Patreon members that we can realistically include in each bonus activity. (Clearly the invite to participate in the podcast interview or attend the TWICB "Board Meeting" needs to be strictly limited in numbers, or else the bonus would cease to be "exclusive” and would risk disrupting the actual process itself.) Q. Are the Membership Benefits and Levels set in stone? A. Of course not! We are literally making this up as we go along currently! We would love to get your feedback on the Levels, the Benefits, and indeed the very idea of using Patreon in the first place! Please hit us up on IG (@thisweekincraft.beer) or via email rob@thisweekincraft.beer. We confidently expect to need to adjust the Patreon model as we go along, based on feedback. Q. Is this like a Gym membership, where I sign up in January, and then regret it for the rest of the year?! A. Definitely Not! Membership is month-to-month and you can cancel your membership at any time. Only caveat here is that certain Member Benefits (mainly those ones that involve a significant cost for us to provide to you) are only unlocked after three or six months at a certain tier. www.patreon.com/thisweekincraftbeer 42
