FORT WORTH CONVENTION CENTER The Fort Worth Convention Center provides an Outstanding Customer Experience to more than 750,000 guests and hosts approximately 150+ revenue producing events including national, regional and state conventions, conferences, concerts, trade shows, and family attractions each year. Within walking distance of thousands of downtown Fort Worth hotel rooms, a variety of incredible restaurants and fabulous shopping, and offering more than 250,000 square feet of exhibit space, nearly 60,000 square feet of flexible meeting space and an impressive 28,160 square-foot ballroom, the Fort Worth Convention Center is the perfect venue for an event. • 253,226 square feet total exhibit space • 58,849 square feet of flexible meeting space, with sizes ranging from 535 to 6,670 • 38 breakout rooms • Multi-functional 13,500-seat Arena • 55,000 square foot Events Plaza that connects to the one-of-a- kind Fort Worth Water Gardens • Magnificent 28,160 square foot Ballroom ABOUT THE PUBLIC EVENTS DEPARTMENT The Public Events department operates the Fort Worth Convention Center and the Will Rogers Memorial Center, the Office of Outdoor Events that coordinates outdoor events throughout the City, and manages the Fort Worth Sports Authority, Inc. which owns the Texas Motor Speedway. The Public Events department also funds Visit Fort Worth through a contractual agreement. The Culture and Tourism Fund, managed by the Public Events department, promotes increased economic activity through visitor spending. Annual revenue exceeds $59 million from the collection of hotel occupancy taxes (HOT), the DFW Revenue Share Agreement, the Project Financing Zone and revenue generated from events at the venue. The Public Events department operates with 142 full time positions - 62 staff members at the FWCC, 78 staff members at WRMC and 2 staff members with the Office of Outdoor Events. PUBLIC EVENTS DEPARTMENT VISION The Public Events department’s vision is to deliver an Outstanding Customer Experience. The successful candidate will help lead the future expansion of the Fort Worth Convention Center and development of a new Convention Hotel. The successful candidate will also collaborate with Visit Fort Worth and hotels to provide competitive proposals for events. POSITION SUMMARY The General Manager (Assistant Public Events Director) will be responsible for providing an outstanding customer experience by leading the conven�on center team. This posi�on will lead general management ac�vi�es over strategy, service, sales, maintenance, engineering and other tasks as required. The posi�on serves on the Public Events Execu�ve Team, with responsibili�es for developing a department-wide culture and strategy. Du�es include collabora�on with departmental peers and conven�on center stakeholders, establishing appropriate service and staffing levels; developing direct reports on the conven�on center team; iden�fying opportuni�es for con�nual improvement; direc�ng and implemen�ng change; managing the schedule of major events which includes license agreement and space nego�a�ons; direc�ng client mee�ngs; overseeing and monitoring event opera�ons; responding to and resolving sensi�ve inquiries and concerns; overseeing and par�cipa�ng in the development and administra�on of the departmental budget which includes recommending funds needed for staffing, equipment, materials, capital improvements and supplies; accountability for performance, monitoring revenues and expenditures. Reports directly to the Director – City of Fort Worth Public Events. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: • While repor�ng to the Director of Public Events, directs the ac�vi�es of the Fort Worth Conven�on Center, which includes planning, coordina�ng, administering, and evalua�ng programs, projects, processes, procedures, systems, standards, and/or service offerings and performs other related du�es as required. • Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local laws, regula�ons, codes, and/or standards. • Supervises staff, which includes priori�zing and assigning work; conduc�ng performance evalua�ons; ensuring staff is trained; ensuring employees follow policies and procedures; maintaining a healthy and safe working environment; and, making hiring, termina�on, and disciplinary decisions or recommenda�ons. • Assists in development and implementa�on of the marke�ng and business plans for the Public Events department. • Establishes appropriate service and staffing levels; monitors and evaluates the efficiency and effec�veness of public event methods and procedures; allocates resources accordingly. • Coordinates scheduling of major events, including contract and space nego�a�ons and direct client mee�ngs; oversees and monitors event opera�ons. • Assesses and monitors workload, administra�ve and support systems and internal repor�ng rela�onships; iden�fies opportuni�es for improvement; directs and implements changes; serves as project leader of assigned programs and projects; tracks and monitors progress on assigned projects. • Oversees and par�cipates in the development and administra�on of the division budget; recommends funds needed for staffing, equipment, materials and supplies; monitors revenue and expenditures; implements budgetary policy and procedures. • Provides staff assistance to the Public Events Director and other execu�ve level staff as appropriate; par�cipates and provides staff support to a variety of boards, commissions and commitees. • Responds to and resolves sensi�ve inquiries and concerns. • Adheres to assigned work schedule as outlined in the Department and City atendance policies and procedures; ensures all behaviors comply with the City’s Personnel Rules and Regula�ons. • Pursuant to the City of Fort Worth’s Code of Ordinances and Personnel Rules and Regula�ons, employees in this posi�on cannot file an appeal of disciplinary ac�ons taken against them. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: The successful candidate will have ten (10) years of increasingly responsible and professional experience in the management of a conven�on center, conven�on hotel, and major hospitality industries including at least five (5) years of senior level leadership over a large team and experience working with hotels and Des�na�on Marke�ng Organiza�ons (DMO) to pursue conven�on business. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in business administra�on, public administra�on, marke�ng, business management or a related field is preferred. SKILL SET AND KNOWLEDGE: • Full understanding and experience with overall activities of convention/DMO/hotels. • Understanding of municipal operations, functions, reporting, etc. • Understanding of capital projects including design, construction, and related administration. • Knowledge of sales and marketing related to attracting and retaining top tier conventions, equestrian shows and other major events. • Ability to train and develop staff to deliver an Outstanding Customer Experience. PRIORITIES FOR THE FIRST 6 MONTHS TO 1 YEAR: • In conjunc�on with the Public Events Director, assist in the effort and leadership to formulate the plan for the two-phased conven�on center expansion. Gain an understanding of the funding mechanisms, �melines and projec�ons associated with poten�al developments. • Assist, lead, organize and direct the implementa�on plan for expansion(s) with plans to overcome obstacles while maintaining a smooth opera�on. • Go on a listening tour with community, hospitality and city leaders to understand what is working and what is not. Gain feedback on the various recommenda�ons to share with Public Events Director and begin to formulate strategy with accountable benchmarks to improve service, revenue and partnerships. • Assess the opera�ons and service levels to ensure the facili�es are opera�ng at a high level of customer service and efficiency. • Assess current team to ensure they are deployed to operate at a high and efficient level. • Develop a strong partnership with Visit Fort Worth (the Fort Worth Conven�on & Visitors Bureau) and through joint assessment and mutual collabora�on, con�nue to move in a posi�ve direc�on to effec�vely book the Fort Worth Conven�on Center. • Understand and review finance/budget structure. • Understand how the Conven�on Center is funded to ensure exis�ng debt is effec�vely serviced, capacity for future debt addresses exis�ng infrastructure and strategically manage poten�al partnerships. • Become familiar with past and current capital projects and ensure a viable, calculated five (5) year capital plan is effec�vely managed and maintained by working with a mul�-department team to update future capital plans and develop a schedule of priori�zed projects. • Manage rela�onship with exclusive vendors - Trinity F&B, Edlen Electric, Smart City Networks, J&S Audio Visual.
