Why we created the Fixed Price Helicopter Licence The number one concern prospective students previously had, was the unknown cost of reaching the required standard to gain their Private Pilot Licence to fly helicopters. Everyone we meet and that joins our flying community has a different reason for wanting to fly, but right now with the forecasted shortage of CPL(H) pilots in a couple of years time, almost half of our students are here as their first step towards a rewarding Commercial Pilot career. © ICE Helicopters 2020-2021 2
About the Author Martin Varley In 1987 I decided I wanted to learn to fly, initially aeroplanes but quickly realised that helicopters were more interesting and useful! My PPL(H) was gained in an Enstrom, with no need for governor failure practices as there wasn’t one! It did not even have a correlated throttle, so it was a fabulous if not challenging way to learn. Life then got in the way as the saying goes, and 33 years later, I had not flown and decided to get myself current. Sadly I did not get lucky with my choice of training school and decided that I could create a better experience with the right team and the proper approach. ICE Helicopters now has the widest collection of machines to learn on, a community that I am proud to be a part of and a commitment to quality of training and value for money that hopefully more schools will adopt. I now have both EASA and FAA PPL(H) licences with an EASA night rating as well as ratings on the R44, R66, MD520 and Cabri G2, I am about to start my FAA flight instructor course and a rating on an AS350. 3 © ICE Helicopters 2020-2021
Aviation Goals: Building A Career Career focused students will do their PPL and then move onto gaining a Commercial Pilots Licence (CPL). An efficient way to build hours and experience as a Commercial Pilot is to qualify as a flight instructor with us right here at Elstree. At this point, student becomes teacher as they switch roles to one of helping people take their first step to learning, just like themselves. From there on, you’ll get the chance to choose your ideal career path, be it a pilot for the Air Ambulance, Police, Corporate, VIP Charter or Oil & Gas industries. © ICE Helicopters 2020-2021 4
Aviation Goals: Flying for Fun The rest, like myself, learn to fly for the pure pleasure (and challenge) that opens the door to a lifetime of learning, travel and socialising. Our students all become long term members of our community and they have access to the widest range of self-fly hire helicopters in the UK, meaning they can take a buzz around the local area in a two seater, or take family and friends to stunning locations in the UK or further afield to Ireland and France using a turbine powered five seater. © ICE Helicopters 2020-2021 5
Transparent Fixed Pricing The CAA (EASA) minimum requirement for the granting of a PPL(H) is 45 hours of flight training, 10 hours of which are solo. In reality, unless you focused on it full time (such as in the military), or as part of an integrated full-time course, then you are most likely to be closer to the national average of approximately 70 hours of flight time. Whilst our average is lower, we acknowledge that there are some schools which have students needing over 100 hours. We set out to understand what the drivers were of taking 30 hours more than the average, and what would be the most efficient and effective way to train pilots of the future to be legal, able, capable and confident. © ICE Helicopters 2020-2021 6
Our Focus That gave us our First Guiding Principle of not letting students waste unnecessary time and money when getting their PPL. It is much more beneficial to spend that money on continued learning after you have a licence, as well as enjoying the benefit of being one of the very few people in the UK that can proudly say they have reached the required standard to hold a Helicopter Pilot Licence. © ICE Helicopters 2020-2021 7
Research Our extensive research through focus groups, one on one meetings and trial lessons led us to our Second Guiding Principle: We focus on making sure our students have a positive experience as a ‘customer’ and that we never forget you are paying us a lot of money, therefore you should be treated as such. © ICE Helicopters 2020-2021 8
Training Methodology When many of us trained to fly decades ago, we were taught well, but the style was a carryover from the military and not particularly customer focused (to say the least). The focus was on making people ‘battle ready’ and electronic aids were few and far between. Whilst little has changed with aircraft manufacture, much has changed with the electronics and the CAA now encouraging the usage of anything that makes us safer. © ICE Helicopters 2020-2021 9
Enjoying Safety There is an important balance, and we maintain it sensibly with the Third Guiding Principle: “We train pilots to be safe.” A short statement but that is at the heart of what we do. We demonstrate that in every part of your journey with us. © ICE Helicopters 2020-2021 10
First Steps With such a large commitment to time and of course financial resources, we want to make sure that we are both right for each other. You need to check that you will enjoy the process from your first lesson to your first solo, all the way through to the first time you take friends or family to a land away. © ICE Helicopters 2020-2021 11
Are we the right fit? Come and hang out for a few hours and meet some of our inspiring community. Chat with one of the instructors or any of the CPLs or ATPLs about their experiences. Look around the various aircraft, sit in them, ask questions and let’s talk about why you want to learn so that we can make sure we know what your ultimate goal is. © ICE Helicopters 2020-2021 12
Trial Lesson When ready, take a trial lesson with one of our experienced examiners or instructors so we can both assess each other. Then most importantly, sleep on it, and when ready, move to the best part: the course itself. © ICE Helicopters 2020-2021 13
Theoretical Knowledge When it comes to the theoretical knowledge side of learning to fly, another common question is: “Will I be able to do the exams?” There are nine subjects and the exams are multiple choice, varying between 12 and 18 questions. These moved to an online portal from the 5th October 2020 and whilst no more difficult, the process is a little more formal. © ICE Helicopters 2020-2021 14
Ground School We have a full-time ground school team, and we help you every step of the way to get through this ever so slightly painful but necessary part of the journey. With ground school included in the fixed price, we can guarantee that the theoretical side never gets in the way of the practical learning but helps you understand what, and not just why, your control inputs in the cockpit change your flight dynamics. © ICE Helicopters 2020-2021 15
Consolidation We will teach you the full flight curriculum alongside classroom work. We will work with you to sign off each of the flight training exercises, whilst incorporating memorable, educational flight experiences to mark the milestones along the way to celebrate your achievements. As you come to the end of your training and are ready for your flight test, we will have made sure you are the safest and fully rounded private helicopter pilot you can be. © ICE Helicopters 2020-2021 16
Resources At our base, Elstree Aviation Centre, we are lucky to have training rooms and a crew room with full kitchen facilities so that you can have meals and drinks in between sessions or even stay for the whole day to study & fly. We have our own hangar so you can learn all about the helicopter even when the weather is not at its finest. Being that it’s busy with plenty of Commercial Pilots using it as their base, you will likely get a chance to be inspired most days, by people with more hours behind them than you could imagine! © ICE Helicopters 2020-2021 17
The ICE Difference Getting a Pilot Licence requires dedication, determination and hard work, and that is from you as well as us; we both have our roles to play. ICE Helicopters has built a community of all the best people, helicopters and processes to support you through your flying journey, from a student mentor with years of PPL(H) experience, to various generations of helicopter pilot. Our instructors are all standardised from a training perspective, but have their own little insights and styles that will ensure we’ll always find the right fit for you. We also have an in-house flight examiner and in-house ground examiner, so you benefit from regular progress checks throughout your training journey. © ICE Helicopters 2020-2021 18
Familiarisation We do not believe in wasting money sat in the helicopter with rotors running, charging you to learn things that can just as easily be better learnt and practiced on the ground! With a state-of-the-art simulator, we can teach you so much on the ground (e.g. start-up procedures, changing frequencies, radio work etc). With access to fixed wing aircraft, we might even take you for an hour just to get used to the feeling and show you how instruments work in relation to the aircraft controls. © ICE Helicopters 2020-2021 19
Flight Simulator Having 24/7 hour access to our own simulator means our community of pilots and students never have to stop learning. They can try things over and over again to get familiar with simple tasks which become anything but simple when you are also trying to fly a helicopter. In effect, getting some ‘muscle memory’ while on the ground will save you hours of time in the air! © ICE Helicopters 2020-2021 20
Licence in Hand! We know that once you have gained your licence the world is your oyster. We look forward to being there with you to guide you as you join us on community trips, self-fly hire, or even hire a helicopter when travelling overseas. If you decide go on to do your commercial flight training with us we will help you every step of the way. © ICE Helicopters 2020-2021 21
Fixed Price or Pay Per Hour? I get asked regularly whether someone is better off doing the Fixed Price PPL versus the pay-as-you-go. It is the toughest question of all. If you commit to learning intensively then you can get through in close to 45 hours (the legal minimum), but the national average is almost 70 hours and there are many people that have not even been solo after that time at other schools. I guess the answer then is that if you commit to working hard, reading, learning, listening and using our great facilities then you might as well do the Fixed Price option as it will be cheaper and not give you any unwelcome surprises. The course, once you’re accepted following an assessment flight, requires at least a 3 day per week commitment at our Elstree base and is completed within 6 months. If you want to learn at your own pace over a year or so due to work or financial commitments then the pay per hour is most certainly more suitable. Either way, you get the same quality of training, the best machines and access to our guaranteed ground school. The choice is 100% your own but we will do our best to guide you in the right direction. © ICE Helicopters 2020-2021 22

Our company was founded with a clear vision to offer quality training with total transparency on costs. We have created a package to include everything you will need to complete your Private Pilot Licence, the PPL(H), from books, flight training and even your medical, with no hidden extras. As the owner I wanted to make sure our students have a more positive experience than I had when learning to fly in recent years. When you dream of learning to fly, there are a few common questions – “can I afford it?” is usually the first one! Let me tell you this, learning to fly is not cheap; but it is all of the little extras you don’t expect which you need to know about upfront such as landing and circuit fees. With our “all inclusive” fixed price licence there will be no unexpected invoices coming your way so you can relax and enjoy your training! Another common question is “will I be able to do the exams?” Exams should not be a cause for worry, we want you to pass! So whilst the subjects you will study can be occasionally challenging, if you are introduced to them at the right time in your training they make total sense and won’t blind you with science! All exams are sat in-house, are multiple choice and take no more than 60 minutes each. Much of the learning is self- study, but we include some 1-on-1 Ground School to support your learning on top of a full briefing before each flight exercise, all included in the cost. Getting a Pilot Licence requires dedication, so to gain yours all you need to do is match ours! At ICE Helicopters we have built a community of all the best people to support you through your flying journey, from a Student Mentor with years of experience, to 3 different generations of helicopter pilots so you find your fit. We’ve also got an in house flight examiner - so you can learn from the expert in amongst your training! We will give you all of the tools you need to pass in 3 steps: Familiarisation - At ICE we do not believe in charging people for flying to learn things they can just as easily learn on the ground!
