A NOTE FROM THE RECTOR Finding Our True Home … making every effort to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. Ephesians 4:3 Home is supposed to be the place where you are known and loved. It is a place where you find sanctuary and do not have to be defended. For centuries and centuries, home had very little to do with the decorations that were in it and everything to do with finding your identity and your mission in life. Today, your true home is a web of relationships that you create from a variety of places. Thus, we have a different sense of home – not just the place where you spend the night, but the place where we find belonging. So it makes sense that when we come to Grace, we think of it as yet another resource for building identity and mission. But Grace is more than a resource because we have a very different notion about home. Unlike the coffee houses, the gyms, and the work places, here we gather around the table to be reminded that in our home, there are family members that we will never meet, but we are expected to love. Paul describes this home as beginning with Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. It is a perfect, inseparable family of love, and we have been adopted into this family in Christ. So your true home is in this extraordinary Triune communion of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and you have been given a place at Their table. The Trinity was never meant to be confusing language about the nature of God. It is a biblical description of the perfect home. The
Father calls his son, Jesus Christ, the beloved, and the Holy Spirit invites you to come to their table as one of God’s children. You then are made the joint heir of Jesus Christ. But you are not the only joint heir with Jesus Christ, there are others speaking every language under the sun. This is your family as well. Like every family, each of us has our own limitations, short- sightedness and problems. But unlike any other family, we have a great physician who is at work among us. Sometimes he comforts us; sometimes he confronts us; but at all times, he gives us his life so we can be about his work. He gives us his identity so we can be about his mission of loving our enemies, caring for the poor, and giving hope to those who have no opportunities. That is our family business. It is our true vocation for every one of us. And that is where we will find our true home. Peace,
