5 September 2012 children’s lives and nothing will ever come close to hearing your son say I love you. In my short time as being a dad I’m only just getting used to this Fathers Day celebration. I try to think back to before we had kids Fathers Day Mass, Friday 31st August 2012 and I couldn’t fathom not having my 2 children in my life. Life would be boring without them. I always think if I could be half the dad my When asked by Mr David Matheson to give this quick reflection I father was to me then I will be doing a great job. didn’t know what I was going to talk about as I believe I’m still fairly Even at this early stage of fatherhood I find it hard to sit back and new at the game of being a Dad. I look around the chapel this watch my son make a mistake but he knows that I will be there for morning and I see years of fatherhood experience and I begin the a shoulder to cry on when things don’t go his way. I’m excited about think what sort of a father will I be when my son gets to high teaching him to play footy, cricket and to take him camping. I love school. Rather than trying to predict the future I wanted to just the fact that thinks I can fix everything even though I’m a useless reflect on my experience so far as a dad. handyman. These are the things that make me proud to be a dad. I have son Joshua who is three and a daughter Emma who is 1 and To all the fathers amongst us this morning, I hope you have a great both have turned my world upside down. I come home from work feeling tired and Sunday, it might just make their day. sometimes a little stressed from the day and all it takes is the smile from your children to wipe the problems away. Mr Chris Whitty Before having children I remember celebrating Fathers Day as a Holy Cross College Old Boy 1995 day that I tried to make my dad special and proud of me. This was done by buying a present, cooking him something or just chatting to him about the footy. My dad was always proud of everything I did even when I didn’t think it was a big deal and I never really understood until I had my own son. My dad was always bias towards me and he thought I was the best at everything and I remember saying to myself that there is no way I would be that bias to my son. Fortunate or not I have followed in his footsteps. I think every dad thinks their son is the best at what they do and why shouldn’t they. I think the world Joshua and Emma and I’m proud of everything they do, whether it be Joshua learning to swim or hitting a ball in cricket or Emma taking her first steps. I am now beginning to understand what my dad was going on about. There are many things I love about being a dad and especially having a son. One is that I get to share my sporting trials and tribulations with Joshua. Josh had no choice but to be a Tigers fan in our household and I have loved Liam Brundle accepts his Archbishop of Sydney Award for taking him to the games even though they haven’t been going that Student Excellence from Cardinal George Pell, St Mary's well this year. Brothers will come from India to join Br Joseph in community and in the school. Since 2007 the Patrician Brothers, under the leadership of Br Jerome Ellens, have moved into three new missions: Ghana, South Sudan, and now U.A.E. Something amazing for such a small Congregation, made possible largely through the generosity and courage of the Indian Province which has supplied, and will supply, the Brothers for all these missions - Brother Ernest Gaudion will soon be arriving in Ghana to join the Brothers there. While there have been Patrician connections in Dubai for many years, the Patrician move to the region has been comparatively sudden. Br Jerome has never been one to run on the spot, and soon after negotiating the missioning of two Brothers to South Sudan his gaze was turned to the United Arab Emirates. An invitation came from Bishop Paul Hinder of the Vicariate of South Arabia to consider partnering with the Diocese in Photo: Ken Geiger/National Geographic Magazine administering St. Mary’s Catholic School, Dubai. Dear parents and lovers of the arts, As those who attended this year’s Creative Arts Night would attest, the Arts are flourishing at Holy Cross College Ryde. The Year Twelve Visual Arts students submitted their bodies of work last Monday. While many of the works had been completed weeks in advance, there was a collective sigh of relief when the whistle blew. Although the students were acutely aware of each other’s progress during the year, the Creative Arts Night was for many, their first opportunity to critically analyse the work of their peers. It was heartwarming to see pats on backs and even hugs in response to the works. The group has since labelled their work ready for marking. Knowing how much effort was directed into the work we share high expectations. Here is a taste of some of the reasoning behind one of this year’s finest works: “Days, Years, Lifetimes” (2012) by Jeremy Pollicina. “Days, Years, Lifetimes” is a triptych of oil paintings. My body of work re-contextualises his work but John Phillips makes the distinct intervention to Senior Visual Arts test how Turner might have otherwise viewed the same vista had he observed it at a different time. By playing out these atmospheric scenarios I am able to explore the range of qualities oil paints offer in terms of representing light. The growth of the tree, the shifting light source and the changing tides are notable indications that time is passing between each frame. The observation of passing time is a central concern of the work. Going by how the tree in the mid-ground grows, decades have passed between the first and third frame. Furthermore, each frame is distinct with the orientation of the sun (the light source), suggesting a progression from dawn to midday to dusk.
