COVER STORY The Black Church: A Story of Grace and Survival F or many, the Black Church has been the heartbeat of the African American experience through its places of worship, from prayer houses and camp meetings to store-front structures and mega-churches. But for others, it has been so much more: a sanctuary for the marginal- ized, a haven for social justice and a source for cul- tural gifts shared around the world—including the soulful voices of preachers and the sublime sounds of gospel music. “No social insti- tution in the Black community is more central and important than the Black Church,” said Henry Louis Gates, Jr., executive producer, writer and host of The Black Church: This is Our Story, This is Our Song. In his two-part series, the Harvard scholar explores the 400-year story of the Black Church and the vital role it has played as a positive force for African American survival, resilience, grace and solidarity. One message is clear: The Black Church is not a monolith. “Black Christianity has a rich, complex and While nuanced history, with common roots but many branches,” researching the Gates said. “For our purposes, we’ve gathered those film, Gates said he branches together under the rubric of ‘The Black Church’ discovered a number while respecting and analyzing the differences within it.” of surprising revelations. In all, he conducted 62 interviews with noted scholars, public figures and religious leaders, including talk show host Oprah Winfrey, singer-songwriter John Legend, singer and actress Jennifer Hudson, Presiding Bishop of The Episcopal Church Michael Curry, the Rev. Gates ends the series with a moving pilgrimage to that same church, where he tells members of the faith community there about a vow he made to God as a 12-year-old boy when his mother had a health scare that nearly took her life. “This is a deeply personal series for me,” he said. “My religions that only sadness is that my parents aren’t here to watch this had already one with me.
