SUSTAINABILITY: HOW WE ARE DOING IT BETTER Nurturing the Environment: Zero Harm, Zero Waste & Zero Discharge Recycling and reuse of wastewater generated at plants, resulting in 3.6 million m3 reduction in freshwater consumption over previous fiscal Reduced indirect energy consumption by 8 million giga joules (GJ) Reduced GHG emission intensity by more than 18% from a 2012 baseline 10.5 million units of renewable power was purchased by the business for consumption ‘ Carbon Forum ’ created at group level to proactively work on the company’s carbon mitigation approach. Partnered with Runaya LLC for 100% utilization of dross , a by-product of aluminium smelting, Creating & Distributing resulting in zero waste. Economic Value >100% fly ash utilization for various purposes, Production of 1.9 million tonnes of like cement manufacturing, brick manufacturing aluminium and backfilling of mine void, etc. Generated and distributed economic Rehabilitation of mined out areas of Mainpat value to the tune of USD 4.8 billion and Bodai Daldali bauxite mines in Chhattisgarh, with plantation of 2 million saplings and creation of water recharging structures A Commitment to 'Care': Towards People and Communities Over USD 14 million spent in community investments Improved lives of 3 lakh people hailing from local communities through social interventions in livelihood and skill development, women’s empowerment, quality education, health & sanitation, etc. With 12% women professionals , Vedanta Aluminium has the highest gender diversity ratio in the Indian metals & mining sector. HSE & SUSTAINABILITY Training on Isolation safety & standard LOTO (Lock In Tag Out) practices To reinforce the importance of integrating safe behavior in workplace activities and generating greater awareness about safety, BALCO conducted a specialized training program on Isolation Safety & Standard LOTO practices for its employees and business partners. More than 150 people attended the virtual training. Water recycling sees a boost at Jharsuguda & Lanjigarh operations Efficient water management is critical to our vision for a Zero Waste and Zero Discharge operation. Post overhauling, our Sewage Treatment Plant at Jharsuguda is treating 12,775 kilo litres (KL) of waste water, making it viable for low-end use such as horticulture, landscaping, etc. at the plant and township. At Lanjigarh, ~43% of freshwater water has been either recycled or reused. Roof-top Rainwater Harvesting System Installed Vedanta has installed a roof-top rainwater harvesting system at its 1215 MW Captive Power Plant (CPP) in Jharsuguda, Odisha. With a collection capacity of 56.23 m3, it will be operationalized during the monsoon season. The water collected through this system will be passed through a water treatment system for secondary usages at the CPP itself. Stepping up energy conservation efforts at Alumina Refinery Energy conservation has been a priority at our operations. At our Alumina Refinery in Lanjigarh, was able to reduce Specific Energy Consumption to 6.83 GJ/T of hydrate, against the target of 7.09 GJ/T. Parallelly, the greenhouse gas emission (measured in carbon dioxide equivalent) per FTM also reduced to 0.91 tco2e/T, against the target of 0.95 tCO2e/T. COMMUNITY & US Vedanta Cares Field Hospital at Raipur inaugurated by CM Chhattisgarh Hon’ble Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh, Shri Bhupesh Baghel, inaugurated Vedanta's state-of- the-art COVID Field Hospital in a virtual ceremony on 26th May. This criticial care facility has been established within the perimeter of the Balco Medical Centre (Cancer Hospital). The air- conditioned field hospital, which has 90 beds equipped with oxygen support and 10 beds with ventilator support, will be managed by Balco Medical Centre. Biofloc farming introduced to fish farmers in Lanjigarh Vedanta has partnered with District Fisheries Department to introduce 'Biofloc', a new pisciculture technology that can significantly boost fish production in Lanjigarh region. It is an innovative system where fish can be produced in very limited space by using artificial tanks with high densities. Vedanta supports Jharsuguda’s COVID Hospital with ICU beds & oxygen cylinders Vedanta is supporting the District COVID Hospital at Jharsuguda with additional ICU beds, ventilators, oxygen cylinders and specialized medical equipment like oxygen flowmeters, N95 masks, etc. to help provide proper treatment to those ailing from the disease. We also set up a diesel generator (DG) set at the hospital to ensure uninterrupted supply of power, and provided a 24*7 ambulance with healthcare workers for logistics support. Vedanta provides 10,000 RT-PCR testing kits to District Hospital Vedanta has provided 10,000 RT-PCR testing kits to District Hospital in Bhawanipatna, Odisha. Mr. G.G. Pal, Dy.
