Winter 2020 Newsletter ELBA CENTRAL SCHOOL Superintendent—Ned Dale December 2020 I can’t believe the challenges and struggles we have seen during this global pandemic! To say that I am proud and honored to lead Elba at this time is an understatement. A huge thank you to our parents for their support and patience and for taking their child’s temperature each day to monitor their health so closely. I am so grateful for each and every staff member’s flexibility and commitment while we gradually reopened to our four day a week in-person learning model. Our reopening plan has worked to keep our students and staff safe with the support of bus drivers, cleaners, aides, assistants, and the leadership of Ms. Bush and Mrs. Rosales. It is important to note that we are working collaboratively with the other agencies that guide us. Paul Pettit, Genesee County Health Director meets with the superintendents weekly and takes phone calls at all hours of the night to ensure that we are making the best decisions possible for our students and staff. Recently, I was one of ten superintendents to meet with the Commissioner of Education, Dr. Betty Rosa. She was seeking feedback from districts of all sizes to learn about the impact and challenges that we have faced during this historical time. I appreciated the invitation and opportunity to share how small rural schools face unique issues with regard to lack of high speed internet, as well as a continued lack of direction with regard to New York State aid funding. In good news, our Preservation Project is almost complete and was under budget. The balance of these funds approved by the community will allow us to address our highest need issues during the summer of 2021 like paving Lancer Lane and replacing the air handling units in the Sherwood Gym. A new capital account is needed to prepare for future projects and repairs to keep our building and grounds in its best condition. Teamwork will get us through this difficult time. If COVID-19 testing is required, our team will be ready and has already applied for temporary lab status with New York State. If there is another issue we haven’t seen before, we will problem solve and address the needs. Our team will adapt to the upcoming changes and work diligently with parents and students to provide the best possible education. Better times are ahead and the potential of numerous vaccines to go back to a more normal environment is what we all hope for. I look forward to the nights where our gym is full with the community cheering on the Lancers. Stay well and enjoy the holidays with your family. Elba Central School JSHS PRINCIPAL—Gretchen Rosales Dear Parents and Guardians; As our students continue to achieve their academic goals in the second marking period, I am continuously amazed at the students’ resilience during this pandemic. I am so thankful for the teachers and staff members who are working their hardest to ensure your children receive a rigorous education. The students, in spite of abnormal circumstances, are growing academically. One thing is for certain, everyone has been flexible and creative while teaching and learning this year; offering an individualized approach to each student’s education is what makes Elba the greatest district around. Our enrichment program and our intervention services continue to grow as our teachers are dedicated to providing excellent instructional opportunities for all students. One of the best parts of my day is visiting classrooms to watch teachers and students engaged in challenging work. The students are very happy to be learning with their peers and with teachers in front of them. We will continue to closely monitor the health and safety of the entire school community. While in-person education is certainly our goal, the welfare of everyone is our priority. Please rest assured that we will continue to remain open as long as it is safe to do so. Finally, as the holiday season approaches, I want to take the time to wish you all a special time with your family, filled with health and happiness. I am sure we will find the holidays look a bit different this year, but we can reframe our thinking around what we might be missing out on. Instead, we can focus on what is truly important: living in a community full of kind-hearted people, having our families and friends remain healthy, and being thankful for our blessings. I remind my own children they are truly living in a historic time; one day, they will share their experiences with the next generation what it was like to live during the Covid-19 pandemic. Have a joyous holiday season and I wish you all of the best in 2021. I know for certain one of my biggest blessings is the opportunity to serve as the Jr. Sr. High principal. #OneElba Respectfully yours, Gretchen Rosales JSHS Principal Wellness Wednesdays At Elba Central School, one of our goals is to prepare students for success, not just in academics, but also in life. We recognize that student achievement is influenced by a variety of factors; and at ECS we have programs to support the physical, social, and emotional health of students to help them reach their full potential. Just as children need to be healthy, safe, engaged, challenged, and supported to perform to their highest ability, so do the school employees who are charged with educating, guiding, nurturing, and protecting them. Whether teaching students in the classroom, running the school, maintaining buildings, or providing safe transport, every school employee contributes to a school’s mission. However, employees can only give their best when they are feeling their best and maintaining a healthy work-life balance. Supporting school employee wellness is an important way to communicate that each staff member is respected and valued. In order to provide education, support, and resources to assist employees on their journey to create a work-life balance and improve quality of life, the PBIS committee provides a weekly challenge called Wellness Wednesdays. The challenge contains a topic related to wellness and a challenge to complete a healthy activity. Those that would like to enter a weekly raffle, inform Mrs. Kohlstaedt or Mrs. Carlie that they have completed the challenge for their name to be added. A name is picked and the recipient receives a gift basket of items related to the weekly challenge. Such topics include; recognizing screen fatigue, stress and control, work-life balance, friendship among many other topics. Our winners so far this year have included: Heather Quinn, Rebecca Johnson, Danielle Cervone, Angelica Conway, Kayla Boedner, Samantha Berl , Marie Thomasulo, and Gretchen Pietryzkowski. We also had a prize one week for all staff in the district. We value all our staff and our goal is to help relieve stress and allow them to be the best that they are!
Winter 2020 Newsletter ELEMENTARY PRINCIPAL— Carol Bush Dear Parents and Guardians, It is hard to believe that it’s already December and that we are just days away from another holiday break. This holiday season is a wonderful time to give thanks for the many blessings we have in our lives. I am certainly thankful for the many blessings in my life, including working with the amazing children, parents, teachers, and staff at Elba Elementary School. Though this school year has been very different than most and has had a few bumps along the way, I still consider us off to a great start. Our students are back in school four days a week, they are gaining the skills they missed out on in the spring, and they once again have social interactions with their peers. These are huge accomplish- ments to be proud of and grateful for, especially when we consider the fact that we are still in the middle of a global pandemic. I want to thank the students, parents, and teachers for the stellar jobs they’ve done in making this crazy school year a success! Over the next few weeks, students will participate in a variety of fun activities as we celebrate this holiday season. They will be decorating the classrooms, making holiday crafts, and maybe even baking too! Some classrooms even have an elf that visits! We are all so excited for the month of December. It is truly one of the best times to be in school! (Don’t worry! There’s a lot of learning that happens too!) While I am hopeful that school will remain open right up until the holiday break, we would be foolish not to consider the possibility that we may need to close a little sooner. If that happens, we are well prepared to pivot to remote learning. Students and parents received copies of the expectations for remote learning as well as our attendance guidelines and all students received buffer packets just in case it happens quickly and there is no time to prepare. If anyone has any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We’re here to help! I wish you a warm and loving holiday season this year, and a new year filled with hope and good health. Take care and stay well! Carol Bush Elementary Principal Students Are Rewarded for Good Behavior We are so excited to continue to use the Positive Behavior Interventions and Support (PBIS) Rewards program to acknowledge students by awarding points when they are exhibiting the school-wide behavior expectations. Students want to earn points because they can use them for rewards in school. The PBIS Rewards program has an online store that allows them to "purchase" rewards using the points they have earned. Some examples of store items are playground balls, tractors, Barbie sets and fishing poles. Prizes for the PBIS program are purchased through a grant as well as donations. The students in grades Kindergarten to 6th grade are popping with excitement, as they were able to spend their PBIS points. This has been motivating students to be Lancer Leaders and be respectful, responsible and safe! A letter sent home recently gave parents information about the program and it provided the QR code necessar y to access individual student’s point information. Please contact Mrs. Carlie if you did not receive the letter or you are having difficulty accessing your child’s account. The basis of PBIS is that we teach behavior to our students just as we would teach any other subject—like reading or math. PBIS recognizes that children can only meet behavior expectations if they know what those expectations are. Our school –wide expectations are Be Respectful, Be Responsible, and Be Safe. Mrs. Kohlstaedt and Mrs. Carlie taught all the students these expectations last year and reinforced them again this year with a lesson to each class. The expectations were clearly defined and signs were placed in all settings as reminders to students. Please call if you need any assistance or have questions about the program. This link is a quick tutorial about our new PBIS rewards program. https://youtu.be/j_1_yFUvXUA.

Our library is located by the North Door and belongs to everyone in our community. Everyone is welcome to take a book or leave a book, and the selection is updated weekly by Mrs. Johnson. Happy reading! ECS Transportation Department Andy Reeb, Transportation Coordinator Happy Holidays from the Transportation Dept. Thank you to students and parents for being ready in the morning. It helps the drivers stay on schedule for pick ups; especially during the winter months. Partnering with parents to get children to and from school safely is our #1 job. We ask that you review the safe crossing procedures with your child: In the mornings, please be sure to stand at least 15 feet from the road while waiting to be picked up. Always wait for the driver to open the door or signal you to cross the street. NEVER approach the bus until it is fully stopped. When getting off the bus, be sure to walk directly to your house. Do NOT stop at your mailbox or walk back to the bus and NEVER run after the bus. If crossing be sure to: 1. Walk away from the bus and 10 feet past the front of the bus and wait for the driver to signal you to cross. 2. Be sure you can see the driver and the driver can see you. Wait until the driver signals you to cross. 3. Look in both directions as you are crossing the street. 4. Continue to walk to your house. NEVER try to go back to the bus if you forgot something. Be Safe and Enjoy the Holidays!
Winter 2020 Newsletter Fall Athletes Excelled Despite Many Challenges Faced with uncertainty throughout the summer months and early into the school year, our athletes continued to prepare for the unknown. But there were questions that would eventually need to be answered. Can we start practice? What will practice look like? How can I play with a mask on? Will my family be able to watch me play? Will we even have a season? What will my senior season look like? All questions that would plague the minds of our athletes who wanted nothing more than to represent their school and community as they have grown to do since elementary school. To all our athletes and parents, Elba Lancer Athletics is a special part of your education and will continue to be today and into the future. The lessons you are learning now will shine through for many years. Your dedication to athletics is what keeps the tradition of winning alive for our community. On behalf of the Athletic Department, thank you for all you do to make sure yourself and our community remain successful and respected. We are all proud of your successes. OAE United Soccer saw an incredibly successful season with a record of 7-6-1 and eventually made a strong showing during Sectional play. The season was full of action and success as the United would win major games over league powerhouses Wheatland-Chili and Kendall while also tying league champions Holley. They would pick up a sectional win over York and advance to play the eventual Class C2 champions Geneseo. After an early Dakota Brinkman goal put the United up 1-0, they would eventually fall to Geneseo 2-1 ending the United’s season. Recognized as Genesee Region All-Stars were Brynn Walczak and Madison Harrington. Congratulations to the OAE United on an amazing season!! OAE Cross Country continues to show the region what success and domination looks like. The Girls team finished 15-1 while the Boys team finished 16-0 in the GR/LCAA competition. Those records earned the Girls their 3rd Division title in 4 years while the boys have now extended their Divisional streak to 7 out of the last 8 years. Fanny Venegas would finish in 11th place out of 125 runners at Sectionals earning her a Sectional patch. Fanny picked up her third straight Genesee Region All-Star nomination. Congratulations Fanny on an amazing career. BBE Boys Soccer, despite a tough regular season with a 5-10 record, would find early success in sectional play with a convincing win over Marcus Whitman 2-0 played at Finger Lakes Community College. Andrew Hare, Austin Hunt, Leyver Galvez, and Jose Luis Venegas were major contributors throughout the season as the Bees would battle each and every game. The BBE Bees will look to reload and get back to their winning ways in the 2021 season. Gymnastics has seen Lyla Marsceill continue to grow and improve in her second season as a gymnast competing with the Genesee Gymnastics team. We are excited to see Lyla continue to grow and represent Elba in this very difficult sport.
Elba Central School Lancers for Life Mr. Cintorino’s class writes a weekly newsletter titled; This Week in Elba Sports that contains articles written by students covering current sports and a Lancer Alumni Section. The following are three articles from their Lancer Alumni-Lancer for Life Section. Lancer Alumni Profile: Mr. Ciaci Zambito Written by Andrew H. In this week’s Lancer for Life, we sat down with former graduate from Elba, Mr. Ciaci Zambito. Mr. Zambito, a 2006 Elba graduate, participated in both Football and Basketball during high school. Mr. Zambito was asked a series of questions about his time in high school at Elba. We learned that Mr. Zambito’s greatest sports memory was winning Section V Championships in his junior year in basketball in 2005, followed by a Section V Championship in his senior year in the fall of 2005 in football. We also have learned that his favorite coaches were Mr. Willmott and Papa Chuck. Mr. Zambito says Mr. Zambito with that he still stays very close with many of his friends and teammates that he played with Dave Burr, senior at Elba. Some of those teammates he has stayed in touch with are Lucas Torrey, Ryan year Byrnes, Tim Maid and Corey Edwards. He has created everlasting bonds with these team- mates that can never be broken. “Coach” Zambito at Sectionals Today, Mr. Zambito is a Special Education teacher at Elba. He is also the Varsity Boys Basketball head coach and considers himself a very lucky person to be in that position. Elba sports were so important to Mr. Zambito because of how much time, effort and passion that he has put into them. He fell in love with competing and playing for Elba at a young age. Mr. Zambito understood that playing for Elba was different from any other town because of the way the community embraced athletics in Elba; they take their sports very seriously. The community support continues to play a big part in the success of the athletic programs in Elba. Mr. Zambito has some advice for Lancers today. Coach Zambito said if he could give one piece of advice to young Lancers, it would be to make sure you are “living in the moment.” He says he has talked to so many athletes from different districts Mr. Zambito scoring a TD over the years that have told him they wished they had taken high school sports in the 2005 Section V Mr. Zambito on more seriously. He says the reality of it is that once your time is up and you cannot Championship Game Senior Night put on your school colors anymore; it is something that you just cannot get back. Mr. Zambito tells us to enjoy every single day and enjoy the teammates and friends and to enjoy the community that is very proud of you for your work and dedication, as there is NOTHING like being an Elba Lancer. Thank you Mr. Zambito for being such a great ambassador for the Elba Lancers! Lancer Alumni Profile: Mr. John Hochmuth Written by Jaycob B. In this week’s Lancer for Life we sat down with former graduate from Elba, Mr. John Hochmuth. Mr. Hochmuth was a three-sport athlete for the Elba Lancers playing football, basketball, and golf. He won a Section V title in Golf his senior year of high school, his last year of being a Lancer athlete. Although he was a three-sport athlete, he never had a favorite coach but he did say that he had tons of memories with them over his high school years. With him and his fellow athletes graduating some time ago, he did say that he keeps in touch with some of his old teammates. “I try to keep in contact with my teammates often. My co-captain on the basketball team, Richard Flores, is someone I stay in close contact with.” It is always good to see old teammates to keep in contact and keep their friendships still floating. Coach Hochmuth was a three-year starter, GR All Star, and captain of the football team
Winter 2020 Newsletter Lancer Alumni Profile: Mr. John Hochmuth (continued)... Today Mr. Hochmuth enjoys his job at Elba teaching our fellow lancers. “Currently, I am teaching elementary PE and High school health at Elba. I am following in the footsteps of all those great Elba coaches and starting to get involved with modified basketball and modified tennis.” Going along with him making memories with coaches and fellow teammates, he mentioned why the sports were so important to him. “Sports in Elba were where my closest friendships were made. I felt connected to the community after seeing how much support they gave to us when we were playing. It showed me the importance of family and how to always make sure you value the most important things in life.” When asked the question what advice you would give our current Lancer athletes, this is how Coach Hochmuth responded. “Enjoy every moment with your teammates. Take the time to be thankful that we have the chance to play for such an amazing school and community. It will be gone quicker than you know!” Thank you Coach Hochmuth for not just leaving a legacy on the field and court, but continuing to build that legacy with us here today! Coach Hochmuth was a starter, GR All Star, and captain of the basketball team Lancer Alumni Profile: Mr. Andrew Boyce Written by Zach H. In this week’s Lancer for Life, we sat down with former graduate from Elba, Mr. Andrew Boyce. Andrew Boyce graduated from Elba High School in 2012. Mr. Boyce was a three-sport athlete competing in Varsity Football, Basketball, and Baseball throughout his high school career. Coach Boyce is now the head coach for Elba’s Varsity Baseball team. His greatest memory from high school sports was beating one of his brothers senior year that had to switch schools. The Lancers Football team was taking on Alexander and going into the second half -they were down 12-0. As the second half started, the Lancers had 4-down goal line stand and responded with a 98 yard TD run to spark them as they would go on to win 13-12! Coach Boyce after making a tackle in his “most memorable” game Coach Boyce looked back fondly on one his coaches who had a big impact in his life, Coach O’Geen. Boyce said of his coach, “Coach O changed my outlook in football and on life; he was everything you need in a role model!” Coach Boyce now runs his own business and stays in touch with a good amount of his friends from high school through encounters from his pizza shop. When asked why Elba sports were so important to him, Coach Boyce replied, “It’s something that’s instilled in you at a young age. I think for me it was watching sports in Elba in the early 2000s particularly 2004 and 2005! Those athletes were great to watch and look up to. As an athlete in Elba, I think you try to leave your impression on the younger crowd, and in a small community like this, it’s one of the best traditions you can have!” Coach Boyce’s advice to current Lancer athletes is to not take any- thing for granted and cherish what’s right there in front of you because it’s all gone before you know it! Coach Boyce stated, “Many athletes Coach Boyce getting ready for a catch and come through that are very skilled, but honestly in my eyes, the best release “3” ones are the guys that instill the good values you learn from the coaches and take the young guys under their wing and show them how it’s done! Because that’s what builds what great culture we have in our athletic department from the water boys to the AD!” We are happy that Andrew Boyce is still a part of our great traditions here at Elba! Thank you Coach Boyce for being a Lancer for Life! Coach Boyce Baseball Team Photo
