Edmundian Report St Edmund’s Prep Sports 2020-21 St Edmund’s Prep Sports Review Should we be sad for what we’ve missed or grateful for what we were able to do. It has sometimes been difficult to remain positive but in all honesty it’s a challenge not to feel an overwhelming sense for both. As a school we have remained positive throughout, ensuring that we’d be prepared to enable the children to participate in as many sporting activities that they safely could. Guided by risk assessments and return to sport guidelines from the government and individual national sporting bodies we managed to provide them with many activities throughout the year. The squad practices began in September, with a team of sports staff preparing the children for the return of fixtures with the exact start dates having not been confirmed at that time. In the Michaelmas Term, we started off by playing football and netball in our Squad Practices in four separate bubbles of Form 5 and Form 6 boys and girls. By the Lent term we were playing hockey for both boys and girls before moving to a rotation of cricket, football and netball in the third term. These squad practices certainly helped to ensure that our children had great preparation for the eventual return of fixtures in the Trinity Term, supported by the amazing results that they achieved, particularly in football and netball. We also took a child-led approach to ensure that the fixture programme gave opportunities to play a range of sports and took a more flexible approach to the usual Summer sports programme. This meant that we were able to play football, netball and cricket matches against other schools and the children were provided with greater variety in the final term.

Fixtures 2020-21 U11 Football The U11A Football team played four matches against St Joseph’s In The Park, King James Academy, Ware Youth FC and Kimbolton. They won all of their matches but were tested against four very good teams. The first match was against St Joseph’s In The Park who also had a strong team at this age group and had won many of their previous matches. However, we looked dominant throughout and won by a large margin in the end. The next match was an away fixture against King James Academy and another superb performance led to another win. The third match was played against a local club side, Ware Youth FC. This game was a more physical test, but again our team came through the challenge showing that even under pressure they could still play great passing football. The way that we pressed the opposition throughout made it very difficult for them to get into any kind of rhythm. The final game against Kimbolton was also very exciting. After going a goal down the U11A team found themselves in the unfamiliar position of being a goal down at half time. However, a goal within minutes of the restart and several more that followed ensured a comfortable victory in the end. Wednesday St Joseph’s In The Park Football (U11A) Won 8-2 28th April Tuesday King James Academy Football (U11A) Won 3-0 11th May Monday Ware Youth FC Football (U11A) Won 6-1 24th May Wednesday Kimbolton Football (U11A) Won 5-1 16th June
The U11B team played twice. The first match against King James Academy ended in a defeat although we did manage to score a few goals in an end-to-end game. The next match ended in a convincing victory against Kimbolton. We scored a lot of goals in this game and it was great to see so many good passing combinations. Tuesday King James Academy Football (U11B) Lost 0-5 11th May Wednesday Kimbolton Football (U11B) Won 15-0 16th June
U10 Football The U10A team played three times. They played against the Howe Green U11A and U10A in two consecutive games on the same day and once more against Kimbolton Prep U11B team. This team shows promise for next year and it was good to see that they are developing as a team. There are some talented individuals in this side but the way that they are starting to link together and communicate positively is the most pleasing aspect of their performances. They won their game against Howe Green U10A by a few goals but were tested more in the next game against the older year group. In the match against Howe Green U11B they were trailing for most of the match before equalising near to the end and then scoring a last-minute winner that sent the crowd wild! The U10A team also secured a superb victory against Kimbolton U11B, scoring lots of goals and winning comfortably in the end. Thursday Howe Green Football (U10A) Won 2-0 13th May Won 3-2 Wednesday Kimbolton Football (U10A) Won 3-1 16th June
U11 Netball The U11A Netball team played six matches before the end of the school year in the Trinity Term and won all of them. The matches were all high scoring with our team changing positions throughout most of the matches to aid all-round development and to try to keep the scorelines more competitive. The first match ended in a 27-2 win against St Joseph’s In The Park. This was followed by the next two matches where the team played twice in one week, winning 21-1 against St Francis’ College and 45-1 against King James Academy. After half- term, the U11A team then recorded a 19-6 victory against St Alban’s Prep and a 26-5 win against Kimbolton Prep. The U11A team then won their final netball fixture at the Prep 30- 6 against St Faiths. The U11A Netball team finished at St Edmund’s Prep, from Forms 3 to 6, with the remarkable record of having played 32 games and won all 32. This feat included victories over some of the strongest school netball sides in Essex (Brentwood and Bancrofts), Cambridge (The Perse and St Faith’s) and Hertfordshire (Stormont, Heath Mount and Berkhamstead). Wednesday St Joseph’s In The Park Netball (U11A) Won 27-2 28th April Monday St Francis’ College Netball (U11A) Won 21-1 24th May Wednesday King James Academy Netball (U11A) Won 45-1 26th May Wednesday St Albans Prep Netball (U11A) Won 19-6 9th June Wednesday Kimbolton Netball (U11A) Won 26-5 16th June Monday St Faith’s Netball (U11A) Won 30-6 21st June
The U11B Netball team thoroughly enjoyed their matches, with all of the girls from Form 6 participating in netball fixtures where an A and B team were fielded by the opposition. They narrowly lost their first match 3-4 against St Albans Prep but won their second game 7-6 against Kimbolton Prep. Wednesday St Albans Prep Netball (U11B) Lost 3-4 9th June Wednesday Kimbolton Netball (U11B) Won 7-6 16th June
U10 Netball The U10A Netball team are showing great promise for next year and put on strong performances in their fixtures to record four superb wins in all four matches. They won their first match 5-4 against Howe Green, even though they played against girls from the year group above them. By all accounts, the match was highly competitive and a great display of the team’s spirit and determination. They then played twice against St Albans Prep on consecutive days, beating their U10A team 10-4 and then their U11B team on the following day, 10-1. Their final match of the season ended in another 10-1 victory against the U11B team from Kimbolton Prep. Thursday Howe Green Netball (U10A) Won 5-4 13th May Tuesday St Albans Prep Netball (U10A) Won 10-4 8th June Wednesday St Albans Prep Netball (U10A) Won 10-1 9th June Wednesday Kimbolton Netball (U10A) Won 10-1 16th June
The U10B Netball team played one match against St Albans Prep. They played very well but lost 3-5 in the end. However, they all played with smiles on their faces and worked really well to move the ball up the court with increased fluency as the match progressed. Tuesday St Albans Prep Netball (U10B) Lost 3-5 8th June
U9 Netball The U9A Netball team played twice against St Albans Prep in one week and won both matches. They beat their U10C team 5-3 and then their U9A team 13-1. Tuesday St Albans Prep Netball (U9A) Won 5-3 8th June Thursday St Albans Prep Netball (U9A) Won 13-1 10th June
The U9B Netball team lost their only match 3-6 against St Albans Prep’s U9B team. They really enjoyed their trip to play against another school and learnt more about court positions and playing in a competitive fixture against another team. Thursday St Albans Prep Netball (U9B) Lost 3-6 10th June
U11 Cricket The Mixed U11A Cricket team played against Howe Green and won by over a hundred runs. Their batting and fielding performances were very strong and it was a great opportunity for the girls and boys in Form 6 to join together and play as one team. Monday Howe Green Mixed Cricket (U11A) Won 114 Runs 14th June Monday 5th St Aubyn’s Cricket (U11A) Lost by 10 Runs July Monday 5th St Aubyn’s Girls Cricket (U11A) Won by 33 July Runs U10 Cricket The U10A team played against a very strong team from Manor Lodge. We opened the batting first but struggled to get a good score on the board as we lost quite a few wickets. That being said, there were a number of very good batting performances and a memorable six was scored! The opposition came into bat next and proved to be too strong for us on this occasion, we eventually lost by 74 runs. The U10B team played very well too against the B team from Manor Lodge. Their match was a lot closer and they were in a very good position going in to the final few overs as the batting team. After losing a few wickets though, they finished the match losing by 12 runs. There were several good performances, particularly by the bowlers. Monday Manor Lodge Cricket (U10A) Lost 74 Runs 14th June (U10B) Lost 12 Runs U10 Girls Cricket The U10A girls cricket team looked very strong in their match against Manor Lodge. They won by 47 runs in the end after several very good batting performances. TheU10B girls cricket team played in a very close match against the B team from Manor Lodge. They enjoyed their game but lost by 34 runs in the end. Monday Manor Lodge Girls Cricket (U10A) Won 47 Runs 14th June (U10B) Lost 34 Runs
U11 Girls Football The U11A Girls Football team played two matches against King James Academy and then Chigwell in preparation for the ISFA Regional Tournament in mid May. They won their first match 5-0 after a very strong performance and followed this up with a 9-0 victory, drawing plaudits from the opposition coaches both times for the quality of the goals that were scored and their defensive organisation too. ISFA Girls Football Regional Qualifiers U11 Girls’ Football- ISFA South Regional Football Tournament @ Ardingly College 14th May, 2021 U11A- W5 D1 L1(3rd Place /20) After arriving at the beautiful grounds of Ardingly College, deep in Surrey countryside after a long journey, our girls got ready for a tournament that they’d long been awaiting after training for several weeks beforehand to prepare as a squad. They started off well, winning their group with 10 points taken from three wins and a draw. These came in a fantastic 2- 0 victory against Royal Russell, followed by a 0-0 draw against ACS Cobham and then a 1- 0 win against Thomas’ Fulham and a dominant 2-0 win against St Swithuns. The quarter final was a nerve- wracking match, but our girls progressed after winning the penalty shootout against the hosts Ardingly College and deserved to do so after the opposition rarely got into our half.
The semi-finals were against Blackheath Prep who were a very talented team and the game was thoroughly fast-paced and competitive. The match finished 0-0 and again went to penalties. This time we lost and went out at the semi final stage to the team that would go on and win the competition. Up to this point, we had not conceded a single goal all day and were just a penalty shootout away from progressing into the final and gaining one of the two qualifying spots for the National Finals! After a tearful end to the semi-final match, the girls regrouped and won the 3rd/4th Place Playoff against Hornsby House, 2-1. Thursday King James Academy Girls Football (U11A) Won 5-0 6th May (U11B) Lost 0-1 Tuesday Chigwell Girls Football (U11A) Won 9-0 11th May (U11B) Won 8-0 (U11C) Won 5-0 Friday ISFA South Regional Tournament Girls Football (U11A) W5 D1 L1 14th May (3rd /16 teams)
The U11B Girls Football team played two matches against King James Academy and then Chigwell. They probably deserved to win their first match against King James Academy but couldn’t manage to score with the opposition getting the decisive goal on a breakaway attack. However, they scored plenty in their next match, a resounding 8-0 victory against Chigwell! Thursday King James Academy Girls Football (U11B) Lost 0-1 6th May Tuesday Chigwell Girls Football (U11B) Won 8-0 11th May
U10 Girls Football The U10A Girls Football team played two matches. Their first game was against Chigwell U11C team where they won 5-0. They also played against St Francis College and this was a very exciting end-to-end game that was full of goals. The opposition took a two goal lead but this was clawed back by our team as we went into half-time at 2-2. We started strongly after half time and scored two more goals although St Francis College levelled with one minute left. Knowing that we had let our lead slip and desperate to score the winner an amazing individual run and goal won the match with just seconds remaining. We won 5-4! Tuesday Chigwell Girls Football (U10A) Won 5-0 11th May Thursday St Francis’ College Girls Football (U10A) Won 5-4 17th June

All three have always shown a committed approach to all sports fixtures and training sessions and their awards were fully deserved. Inter-House Sports Tournaments The St Edmund’s Prep Basketball World Cup got followed hot on the heels of the Kingball competition in November, with each year group playing matches in two group stages in the early rounds. The children were all split into six teams- South Africa, USA, Brazil, Australia, Japan and England and competed together throughout the week in the Butler Hall. The group games were played first, with the top two teams from Group A and Group B going through to the semi-finals. These were planned for the end of the week, with each year group attending a Finals Day where the final matches of the competition would be played. All of the children and Form Tutors from each year group were in attendance, either to play or support their friends. After the finals were played, the children all received a celebratory lunch, including ice cream, in the refectory which was followed by the presentation of medals to the winning teams and certificates to the star players of each tournament. In Form 3, the semi finals were Japan v England and USA v Brazil. They finished 3-0 to Japan and 5-2 to the USA. The final was incredibly close, but USA won 3-2 in the end. In Form 4, the semi finals were Australia v South Africa and Brazil v England. The final went to golden goal and then a shoot-out as the teams could not be separated during normal time. The winners in the end were Brazil! In Form 5, England won their semi-final against South Africa by three goals. The other semi final went to a shootout after the match ended in a draw after extra time. The USA won through in the end in a very close match that was cheered on by the rest of the year group. The other semi final ended in a 3-3 draw after normal time too, this time England were able to secure the winning goal to put themselves through to the final. Another superb final was played, supported by all of the other Year 6 children who were cheering their friends on. England won 2-1 in the end to secure victory. After the finals were played, the children all received a celebratory lunch, including cupcakes, in the refectory which was followed by the presentation of medals to the winning teams and certificates to the star players of each tournament.
In Form 1 and 2, the final was played between South Africa and England. Both of these teams won through from their semi-finals, with England beating Japan by two goals and South Africa beating Australia 2-0. The match was played on the St Edmund’s Prep Netball Court and was supported from the sides by a lot of keen supporters from Key Stage One. South Africa won in the end after an energetic display and some great teamwork was just enough to secure victory! In Form 3, the semi finals were Japan v USA and England v Brazil. Japan won through in the end after winning all of their matches and proving to be unbeatable throughout the tournament. In Form 4, the semi finals were England v South Africa and Brazil v Australia. During the week beginning Monday 26th April, St Edmund’s Prep held their own Tennis World Cup. All children from Forms 3-6 took part in a morning of singles tennis matches that were organised into group games. The winners of each group qualified for the semi-finals on the ‘Finals Day’ at the end of the week. Every child that qualified for the semi-finals chose a country to represent, with those boys and girls from Forms 3-6 going over to compete against each other on Friday morning. We started off with the youngest children playing their semi-finals first, whilst the older ones were umpires and ball boys or ball girls. Form 5 came over to watch mid-way through and it was great to have a crowd to help cheer on the competitors. The finals came next and all of them were fantastic to watch and keenly contested. We finished the morning with a presentation of certificates for 1st and 2nd place. Sports Day Sports Day went ahead this year! After the Department for Education gave the green light for schools to run Sports Day all that remained for us was to find a way to allow parents to attend too, socially-distanced of course, and we found a way. It cannot be under-estimated how important it is for a child to see a smiling face on the sidelines when they are getting ready to compete. Sometimes that reassurance when they feel are starting to feel the nerves is all they need to go on and give of their their best. All of the children gave of their very best and that is all anyone can ever ask. We saw some great examples of individual triumph- from those that pushed themselves to finish a 600 metre race to those that sprinted their way to first place in competitive fields, there were so many ‘winners’ (and not just those who finished with a first placed sticker). The changes to Sports Day included a morning event for Nursery and Reception on the Headmaster’s Field and for Forms 1-3 on the Front Field, followed by an afternoon session for Forms 3-6 on the Front Field too. The Grand-House Relay could not take place but all other events took place as usual. With shorter programmes, it meant that all children were able to participate in the Sports Races and Obstacle Races if they wished. This was a welcome adaptation as these are usually the most entertaining events. All of the scores from the Track and Field Events, from Forms 1-6 were added together and the winners for 2021 were… CAMPION!

Sports Club Directory In our local area, Ware Meninas are attracting a lot of girls to their football club. Whilst Bury Rangers, Ware Youth and Watton-At-Stone are also popular girls’ football clubs. There are too many football clubs for boys to mention, with most local towns and villages having teams for children of most ages. Perhaps those closest to our school are Buntingford Cougars and Ware Youth. It should also be noted that at primary age, girls can also play football in boys’ teams. Local hockey clubs in Hertfordshire include Broxbourne, Bishops Stortford and Hertford. Again, there are quite a few rugby clubs in local proximity with Hertford and Datchworth having had a good representation from St Edmund’s Prep in the past. Hertford, Datchworth, Broxbourne and St Margaretsbury also have very popular junior cricket sections for boys and girls, with girls’ cricket having grown as part of the All-Stars initiative. Turnford, Wodson Park and Hertford Hornets are the biggest netball clubs in our local area and there are currently a good number of children from St Edmund’s Prep at each of these clubs.
