Societies Congress Venue MARRIOTT HOTEL Avenida dos Combatentes 45 Lisbon 1600-042 Lisbon It is not without a reason that Lisbon is called the ‘city of light’. With an approximate 220 days of sunlight, its wide skies and open brightness illuminate the whole city in a way that is nearly impossible to find anywhere else. The city is built on a hill, so it is easy to find some amazing views from where you can get a prospective of what the city looks like and you will always spot the the Tagus river--the Rio Tejo, that flows through the city, onwards towards the sea. The city is divided into districts and every one has something interesting to see. Lisbon’s seven hills also bring comparisons with Rome. Lisbon was known as Olissipo in the times of the Roman Empire and the remains of a theatre from that period are being excavated in Alfama. Alfama is popular with visitors thanks to its winding streets, Fado restaurants and tourist friendly bars. The modernity of the Park of Nations contrasts with the cobbled, narrow streets of the graffiti sprayed Biarro Alto Endorsed by district, a popular place to dine and to drink until late in the night or early in the morning, when the magical light of Lisbon’s day again illuminates the sky, offering further opportunities to explore and photograph. Getting around on public transport is relatively easy thanks to the metro system and network of trams, furniculars, buses, ferries and suburban trains that cover the sights and areas of interest. 16 PROGRAMME EASAPS LISBON 2022
