PRESIDENTS REPORT FEBRUARY 2019 Continuing the positive note of APS it is very pleasing to see both the two new subcommittees SCR1 and SCR2 making strong progress in their research into the fields allocate to them. I am sure we will see proactive outcomes that will help drive the future direction of the Society. The Ballarat APSCON programme is coming together nicely and should be released very soon, there are a number of “In the Field” photography activities planned for the first two days before we sit down to the APS presentations and our fabulous Key Note presenters. A special dinner on the Thursday night will be held at the famous Kryal Castle and will include a pre-dinner photoshoot with the Knights, their ladies and Valiant the magnificent stallion who is very camera friendly. This will be a different dinner experience as we enjoy a three-course meal and entertainment from the Kryal Castle medieval team. We are looking for volunteers to help with registrations at APSCON Ballarat so anyone willing to put in a couple of hours over the 4 days would be appreciated, please let me or Stella know. Details of APSCON Ballarat are emerging on the APS website and registrations should be available early March, accommodation options and speakers’ profiles are already listed for your information. Margaret O’Grady has been busy also in planning APSCON 2020, and it has been agreed that it will be held in Broken Hill in 2020. Margaret has a forerunner in this ENews just to get you started thinking about 2020. The change to move all APS Digital Competitions to the MyPhotoClub website and upload system has been completed with the signing of agreements between APS and MPC. Whilst this is a significant change and will incur a small charge for entry to Digital competitions in the future, the offset is convenience, reliability and freeing up APS and volunteer resources. I am sure it is a good move and a good start to the New Year.
APSCON 2020 MC MATTERS FEBRUARY 2019 1. Motion 4719 Agreement to move all APS Digital competitions to MyPhotoClub has been completed and signed between the two It's with great excitement that MC is announcing that organisations. APSCON 2020 will be held in Broken Hill from 28th August to 31st August. 2. Motion 4724 Changes to the HSC rules approving minimum numbers of acceptances for all levels of APS honours 3. Motion 4725 APSCON 2020 be held in Broken Hill NSW. In keeping with outback setting the program will include Astro photography segments and tours to explore the unique environment that is only found in central regions. So, mark the dates in your diaries and look forwards to a special APSCON in 2020.
FIAP BIENNIALS APS is taking a very positive step and re-engaging with the FIAP Biennial competitions. Run between FIAP member countries the Biennials give each country the opportunity to promote their very best photographers onto a global stage. The three Biennials that we are currently engaging with are: The Colour Biennial with the subject “ Action in the Surf ” – An image depicting people or animals/birds mastering the surf. The selection and entry process is being coordinated by David Rowlands, chair of Digital Group. Print and Projected submissions are now open and close very soon on the 28th February. I do hope that our members are supporting this competition and that APS and Australia will again make their mark in the FIAP Biennials. Following in 2020 there are two more important FIAP Biennials that we are entering. Brian Russell chair of Nature Group will be coordinating the FIAP Nature Biennial, again Prints and Projected images are required for this competition. And David Norris from Victoria will be coordinating the FIAP Monochrome Print only Biennial in 2020. Opening dates, Subject details and closing dates for the 2020 Biennials will be announced by the coordinators later in 2019. On behalf of APS, and our members we thank the Biennial coordinators for taking on this very important task, as members we can now support them and Australia by making sure we have many entries to choose from and the APS FIAP Biennial submissions are world class. FIAP Bulletin Feb 2019 Edition By Bronwen Casey EFIAP MAPS FIAP Liaison Officer for APS flo@a-p-s.org.au FIAP Distinctions Applications Closing Soon Just a reminder to all that the closing date for FIAP Distinctions is 28th February. FIAP applications can only be lodged once per year with FIAP. All items must be lodged in full with the FIAP Liaison Officer by this date and relevant fees must have been paid to the APS office. If anyone is intending to apply who has not yet registered for FIAP Distinctions via the FIAP area of the APS website then please do so immediately or you will miss critical information. FIAP Photographer Cards Those of you who have applied for FIAP Distinctions this year will be aware of the requirement to now have a myfiap login if you are applying for Distinctions. This provides you with a unique identifying FIAP Photographers number (FP profile number). Your login to this website is now also the portal via which FIAP Photographers cards are ordered. You must also have a FIAP Photographers Card in order to apply for Distinctions. I raised my concern with FIAP last year that this meant a persons first FIAP Card would not display the first FIAP Distinction being sought and that purchasing a replacement would then be the only way the Distinction could be included. The mail from FIAP this week has now addressed this issue providing an exception to the process to enable AFIAP to be shown on the applicant’s first card. Unfortunately this change has not been made in time for this year’s Australian applicants but it’s great that it will be there for the future. Over the last week a new web page has been developed with Stella Fava’s assistance to provide information about setting up a myfiap profile and purchasing FIAP Photographers cards. This was completed a day before the above mail from FIAP arrived so if you have already had a read of this page, be aware that it will be revised shortly to cover the change for AFIAP applicants. FIAP cards are also required by anyone who wishes to attend the FIAP Congress or FIAP Photographers Meeting so it is not just for those that apply for Distinctions that apply for cards. People wishing to replace a lost card or old card can also now apply via the myfiap website having set up a myfiap profile. If people have Distinctions, then the order for the card is placed via myfiap but the payments must be collected by APS. The order is then processed as a group order. These will be done just once a year by APS and this will be after the FIAP applications have been approved by FIAP, to time in with those who have new Distinctions and wish to replace their card. Members will be notified of the 4 week order window and a special payment page will be available during those weeks to specifically handle the payment for the card. Anyone else wishing to replace their FIAP Card will also be able to do so during these weeks. If you already have Distinctions and wish to replace your FIAP card, DO NOT order it at any time other than during the advertised month. If you are planning to purchase a card for the first time or replace a card, please have a read of the new website page in the FIAP area of the APS website. https://a-p-s.org.au/index.php/fiap-lifecard-myfiap-login

Always retain the catalogue for verifying your results for honours applications. Essential Information for APS Honours applicants. Verification process Verifying officers have access to the FIAP results database to check members results on their honours applications. The results that are checked are the Image Title, Salon Name, Country and Approval no. Therefore, it is essential that members use the FIAP approval number in their honours application where the salon is approved by FIAP. Where the salon is not approved by FIAP then use the PSA number. Occasionally a salon is not approved by FIAP or PSA but another organisation e.g. PSNZ, RPS, GPU etc. so that number would then be used. We have been informed by the PSA that their database will be available to APS sometime early next year. When we get access to their database then verification of results will be much quicker and easier. Verifying Acceptances on APS Honours Applications Verifying Officers will attempt to check claimed acceptances against information in the FIAP and/or PSA databases. When an acceptance does not appear in these databases the VO will attempt to locate it in a print or electronic catalogue. If these searches do not provide verifiable results for any claimed acceptances the VO will request the applicant to provide either the original catalogue or photocopies, scans or photographs of the acceptance page, affiliation page and title page of the catalogue. If the VO is not satisfied that a claimed acceptance is legitimate it will not be verified. APS approval numbers We have also been alerted to some salons calling themselves “Australian” that have been recognised by the PSA but not by APS. These salons have a PSA approval number but not an APS approval number. All honours applications require some Australian acceptances. These must have an APS approval and not just call themselves “Australian”. Therefore, we have modified all application forms. There are now two approval number columns. One is for FIAP/PSA & Other approval numbers and the other is for APS approval numbers. All Australian acceptances must show an APS approval number, or they will not be counted as “Australian”. It is essential that members use the new forms when asking the VO to verify their results. Results will not be accepted on an old form. We need VO's. We urgently need members who are willing to Verify APS Honours and FIAP Distinctions Applications as members are retiring, for various reasons, and some cities have no verifying officers at all to help members. The task is actually quite easy due to access to an online database of results. You are no longer required to sit down for several hours with boxes of a member’s catalogues/CDs and online catalogues. Most results will be in the online database. You may verify as many or as few applications as you choose to fit in with your other commitments. One requirement is a basic knowledge of the Microsoft EXCEL spreadsheet. We can help you any time you are stuck. The other requirement is a reasonable understanding of the APS Honours and FIAP Distinction systems or a willingness to learn. You should at least have the first level of honours. Again we will help by assigning a mentor. Members who have achieved honours, especially recently, would make very suitable Verifying Officers as you know the system. . Applying for APS honours via the Panel system jan feb mar by Dr Alfred Zommers GMAPS EFIAP/b PPSA What is the honours system? The Australian Photographic Society (APS) has made provision for the awarding of Photographic Honours to reward those who achieve appropriate levels of skill. These honours can be achieved by either gaining acceptances and awards in National and International exhibitions or by submitting a number of images to a panel of judges. Exhibition System Entering exhibitions is mainly done online (prints are posted of course). Each exhibition will have several sections that you can enter and you can enter up to four images per section at a cost of about $10 per section. Generally, the more sections you enter the lower the cost per section becomes. Some exhibitions also have circuits where the same images are judged several times by different judges. The latter is a very cost effective way to enter exhibitions. Panel System As opposed to the Exhibition system submitting a number of images to a panel of judges costs nothing except your application fee (currently $35). Judges are selected who have a high level of photographic skill and suitable honours. Applicants’ images are sent to them for their critique and “scores”. As long as the majority of judges think that most of the images are of a reasonable standard (National for LAPS & AAPS and International for FAPS and MAPS) then the applicant will pass. If the result is borderline the judges will be asked to reassess the images. Every effort is made by the panel to “pass” the applicant. Applicants who do not succeed are supplied feedback about their images to help them in the future. Some tips on ensuring your images are good enough to succeed. o Join a Photography Club and enter the club competitions. Listen to the critique about your images and to the critique of the other members’ images. Organise a group of like-minded people in your club to critique your own images once a month. o Read articles and books about critiquing images (references at the end of this article). o Visit art and photography galleries. Look carefully at each image and try and work out why it appeals or doesn’t appeal to you. When travelling try and include at least one gallery visit in each location. o Review the On Line galleries of International Exhibitions. That will give you some idea of the standard of awarded and accepted images. o Enter a few exhibitions and keep records of your successes and failures (spreadsheets are good for this). Images that have done well in exhibitions will tell you that you have met the standard required especially if those images are successful a lot of the time. Images that you submit several times and are not successful will also tell you that those images were simply not good enough. Then it is up to you to look carefully at your images and try and work out why some work and others don’t. Here some critique from skilled photographers will help. In most exhibitions 25-35% of images will be accepted. If you have gained an acceptance then you know your image is quite good. If it gets an award it is in the top 1-1.5%. o If you are a member of a club you will soon find out who are the good photographers. Seek their opinion about your images. They may be willing to give you ongoing advice. o APS Digital Group has a Critique Room Gallery where members can get peer reviews about their images. You would need to join the Digital Group to access the Gallery.
jan feb FIAP Colour Biennial Call for members to submit images for possible selection for the APS Entry!! All members of the Australian Photographic Society are invited to put forward images for possible selection to represent the APS in this prestigious international competition between National Photographic Federations, that are affiliated with the International Federation of Photographic Art (FIAP). Each nation sets a theme for their entry and selects images from it’s members to enter as a themed set. The Biennial judging itself gives points and awards to individual images and then also points for the coherence of the set as a whole, including subject and presentation. To form a great entry, Australia has chosen the following topic for the upcoming Colour Biennial: ACTION IN THE SURF An image depicting people or animals/birds mastering the surf. Two sets must be selected, one for the Print Section and one for the Projected Image section. The two sets do not have to be coherent with one another, but APS will form each set from the images you send to the above topic. The topic is wide but depending on the images submitted, the final tightly themed sets may focus on the human or animal aspect of the above topic. Images chosen by APS selectors can be counted towards APS Honours. Images given a score of 8 or more in the Biennial judging itself can be counted for FIAP Distinctions. The APS Coordinator for the Colour Biennial Entry for 2019 is: David Rowlands FAPS All entries are to be sent to David, not the APS Office. A document containing the full details and submission form for this exciting event can be downloaded from the FIAP area of the APS website: https://a-p-s.org.au/index.php/other-fiap-documentation Closing Date for Submissions of Images: 28th February 2019 This closing date is very strict as images, including prints, must be in Spain in March. The competition to be selected for the APS Colour Biennial Entry is open to APS members only. Entry is FREE! Get on board everyone and send us your Action in the Surf images. The best and most cohesive set will result from getting a large number of submissions from which to select. This is your chance to represent the Australian Photographic Society overseas. It’s been a few years since APS last entered the Biennials but, from 2019, the Australian Photographic Society plans to be back in force in this competition!
