Douglas Lodge Story
    Did You Know....Little Known Facts about Douglas Lodge

• Douglas Lodge is named after Attorney General Wallace B. Douglas, a
supporter of state parks.
• The original name for the project was Itasca Park Lodge and it was also
referred to as the State Park House.
• Mary Gibbs, acting Park Commission (manager) from February-June
1903, was handling contracts with mill operators and stone masons in
preparations for the construction of the State Park House (Douglas
Lodge).
• Clarence H. Johnson Sr., architect for the State Board of Control,
designed the 40 foot by 80 foot two-story lodge in a rustic design with
overhanging cornices. The great room features a large stone fireplace.
• The father/son team of Thomas Corwin and Samuel I. Myers, respected
builders in the Park Rapids, Minnesota area, began construction of the
Douglas Lodge in 1904.
• The construction and furnishings/equipment costs of Douglas Lodge
totaled $10,000.
