Central to advancing the economic vitality of the Hennepin Theatre District, the Trust has an exciting lineup of Broadway events, concerts and comedy shows ready to welcome Minnesota citizens back to its three historic theatres in 2021. Broadway engagements scheduled for the upcoming season include Disney’s Frozen, Oklahoma!, Anastasia, Jersey Boys, Cats, Moulin Rouge! The Musical, and more. Building a vibrant Hennepin Theatre District Hennepin Theatre Trust transforms the places and spaces in the Hennepin Theatre District to be more vibrant, welcoming and inclusive. The Trust’s public art and engagement activities connect people to arts and cultural experiences, from the iconic Bob Dylan mural to 5 to 10 live concerts to the It’s the People banners depicting the heart and soul of Minneapolis. Free programming, created with key partners, helps increase public safety and benefits youth and adults experiencing homelessness in the District. Hennepin Theatre Trust’s public art program is the largest in the Midwest and creates unique opportunities and platforms for artists. Supporting students through Spotlight Education Hennepin Theatre Trust’s Spotlight Education program is an essential part of arts education in many Minnesota schools, increasing equitable access to quality theater education. Partnering with community organizations and elementary schools, Spotlight Education creates inclusive and sustainable arts experiences for nearly 8,000 students annually. Spotlight Education programming includes education programs for high school theater students, tours of the Trust’s three historic theatres and Disney Musicals in Schools, which develops sustainable musical theater programs in public elementary schools. It supplements and enhances arts curricula, building confidence, critical thinking, empathy, sense of community and knowledge of theater. Spotlight Showcase, the program’s annual recognition event, is Minnesota’s largest celebration of high school theater and provides 1,600 students the opportunity to perform at the historic State Theatre.
POSITION PROFILE: DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT The Hennepin The Hennepin is a nonprofit event center located in the heart of the Hennepin Theatre District in downtown Minneapolis. Hennepin Theatre Trust refurbished this 1921 gem that has housed businesses ranging from the Knickerbocker Dancing School to a barber shop, from a karate school to a hospitality house for veterans. Today, the three-story building is a premier event and performance center and home to Hennepin Theatre Trust’s business offices. All profits from events at The Hennepin support Hennepin Theatre Trust’s artistic and educational programs. The Role In partnership with the President/CEO, fundraising team, and board of directors, the Director of Development will have overall responsibility for developing, implementing, and managing Hennepin Theatre Trust’s comprehensive fundraising efforts, including major giving, annual campaigns, sponsorships, grants, and donor cultivation. The Director will be responsible for identifying and operationalizing annual strategies to meet or exceed contributed revenue goals and will be tasked with establishing a strategic investment fund for the Trust. As a builder and collaborator, this Director will strengthen the Trust’s culture of philanthropy and help each department understand its role in fundraising. The Director will also work across departments to help craft key messages and compelling stories that show the Trust’s value, to influence and evaluate programming, and to identify and pursue funding opportunities. Reporting and Stakeholder Relationships The Director of Development reports to the President/ CEO and has direct oversight over a team of fundraising professionals, including the Development Officer for Corporate Relationships, the Development Officer for Annual Giving, the Development Officer for Grants and Evaluation, the Development Officer for Major Gifts, a Donor Stewardship Supervisor and two Donor Stewardship Coordinators. The Director will also work in close collaboration with the Trust’s CAO and its external relations, programming, finance and IT teams as well as its board of directors. Compensation Total compensation for this role will be in the range of $115,000 to $130,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
POSITION PROFILE: DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT Key Accountabilities Development Strategies & Fundraising • Develop and implement overall fundraising strategies • Oversee direct reports’ plans for donor cultivation, major gifts, sponsorships, and grants • Serve as lead staff person for the board’s development committee and as primary contact for board members for development; prepare and make board presentations • Ensure contributed revenue increases to enable the Trust to achieve its vision, including but not limited to identifying new funding opportunities, expanding the donor base, finding operational efficiencies, and collaborating with other departments • Manage a portfolio of donors • Connect with donors and prospective donors in the lounges during Broadway show nights • Create a portfolio of donors for the President/CEO • Lead the establishment of a strategic investment fund • Lead campaign efforts as needed to meet or exceed goals; responsibilities include but are not limited to driving strategies, meeting with prospects, and sharing progress Development Operations • Oversee the annual budgeting and monthly forecasting processes for the development team • Maintain and improve operational and measurement systems that increase organizational efficiency and effectiveness • Work with the development, finance, and IT teams as need to create meaningful and actionable reports and ensure database integrity • Partner with the chief administrative officer and finance team on board reports and memos • Oversee the day-to-day activities of the development function Leadership, People Management, and Development • Manage, coach, and align the development team with the goals of the Trust • Commit to cultivating a culture that values diversity, equity, and inclusion • Encourage high performance and continuous improvement that values learning, collaboration, and a commitment to excellence in the fundraising effort • Model the Trust’s values, ethics, and performance standards
POSITION PROFILE: DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT The Ideal Candidate With a minimum of 7 years of experience, the Director of Development will be a collaborative, strategic fundraising professional with proven success building comprehensive fundraising strategies, leading a team, and influencing a positive culture of philanthropy that includes hands-on donor cultivation and gift solicitation. The ideal candidate will effectively articulate to prospective donors Hennepin Theatre Trust’s value as an arts organization and leading driver of business and cultural impact in Minneapolis and across the State of Minnesota. While no one candidate will have all of the criteria enumerated below, the ideal candidate will possess many of the following abilities, attributes, and experience: • Demonstrated success developing and implementing comprehensive fundraising plans, including familiarity with individual major giving, sponsorships, grants, and endowments • Proven track record of cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding donors giving $10,000+ • Expertise in effective donor cultivation • Successful track record leading and developing a team of fundraisers • Ability and commitment to establishing a productive, collaborative culture that values diversity, equity, and inclusion. • Results-oriented; driven to accomplish financial goals • High level of business acumen • Excellent problem-solving skills, including negotiation and conflict resolution skills • Ability to operate as strategic thinker, anticipating future needs and showing excellent judgement in a changing environment; flexible and resilient • Detail-oriented with keen analytical skills • High level of integrity; ability to keep confidential information private and secure • Exceptional written, oral, interpersonal, and presentation skills • Strong organizational and time management skills • Familiarity with Salesforce or other fundraising platform(s) • Familiarity with the Minnesota nonprofit and philanthropic communities is preferred • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
