OVERVIEW ABOUT THE SACSC RETAIL DESIGN & DEVELOPMENT AWARDS The SACSC Retail Design & Development Awards (RDDA) is a celebration of shopping centre design excellence, an initiative of the South African Council of Shopping Centres. The RDDA awards seek to annually recognise exceptional Shopping Centre design together with its economic success, within the South African property industry, embodying the following attributes: • Excellent design • Achieving a clear overall development goal • Responding positively to its market and surroundings • Adopting innovative design and construction solutions • Embracing sustainable design and business techniques RDDA awards recognise and reward industry leaders in the design and development of retail centres. This encourages designers, architects and developers in the industry to strive consistently for high standards, as well as raising the bar for design and development, resulting in an industry that is constantly innovating, creating and challenging itself – a mark of world leaders in retail design and development. 1 SACSC RETAIL DESIGN & DEVELOPMENT AWARDS 2020
ENTRY CATEGORIES Four categories will apply and a winner will be selected from each of these: NEW DEVELOPMENTS: RENOVATION/EXPANSION: RETAIL DESIGN – INTERNATIONAL Large Centres Large Centres STORE AND RESTAURANT A BCD (Greater than 60 000m² GLA) (Greater than 60 000m² GLA) Restaurant Design Medium Centres Medium Centres Store Design (20 001m² - 60 000m² GLA) (20 001m² - 60 000m² GLA) (Independent Retailer) Small Centres Small Centres Store Design (Less than 20 000m² GLA) (Less than 20 000m² GLA) (Large National Retailer) JUDGING PROCESS Judging is a 3-step process: STEP 1 STEP 2 STEP 3 123 Judges review eligible submissions and score The 2nd round judging then includes all Judging takes place in person or via them confidentially. JUDGING PANEL Andrew Ogg (HEAD JUDGE) Consultant Architect, ANDREW OGG CONSULTANCY Andrew has over thirty years’ experience in the retail property industry including twenty years as Managing Director at Leslie Jones Architecture, London and is Past President British Council of Shopping Centres. Working with the UK Government to establish the principles of the regeneration of UK cities through retail and mixed- use urban design has been a highlight in his career. He enjoys the continuous opportunity to learn through the fellowship with other professionals in the industry both in the UK and internationally. Some of his favourite projects include Merry Hill, Dudley, the Outlet Mall working with McArthur Glen and Newport Friars Walk in Wales which was personally rewarding working with the Local Authority to create and see such an economic and urban transformation of a City Centre. Outside of architecture his key passion is ocean racing. Adrian Morris Partner & Managing Director, DESIGN PARTNERSHIP Adrian has over twenty years of commercial, retail and hospitality design industry experience. He has in conjunction with a dynamic team at Design Partnership developed a design and build focused business with a critical understanding of aligning the physical environment and experience to customer needs, brand positioning, and business objectives. Serving clients across retail, hospitality and workplace like Nando’s, Krispy Kreme, Coricraft, Standard Bank, Absa, Edcon, TFG, Seagrass and Pareto to list a few. His favourite projects include his own home, Tashas, FCB reception and public areas. All of these projects had a personal story that drove the design. Adrian enjoys the constant change in the shopping centre industry and describes it as fast, challenging and emotional. In his free time, he enjoys family time and home, The Battle of Britain history, Scale Models. Andrew Bennie Lead Designer & Project Manager, THE NOTORIOUS DESIGN HOUSE Passionate, dedicated and diligent, Andrew Bennie is Lead Designer and Project Manager at The Notorious Design House, a company that has grown as a leading contributor both on a national and international level in Design and Project management. Andrew has more than 20 years’ experience in design and project management, working in corporate and retail property development. He loves the pursuit for innovation, the constant effort to re-develop and create excitement and interest of the shopping centre industry. Andrew believes one requires hard work, dedication, and passion in this industry. Some of Andrew’s favourite projects include La Martina V&A, Aeronautica Gateway and La Martina Val De Vie. In his spare time Andrew enjoys creative abstract art and sharing his creativity and knowledge of design with his two beautiful girls. Brian Unsted Asset Management Executive, LIBERTY 2 DEGREES With over 24 years of experience, Brian has been involved in property management, finance and asset management. One of the highlights of his career includes leading Eastgate through its extension and upgrade project. He enjoys the thrill of seeing new stores opening, new centres opening and the magic that can wow shoppers as a result of the retail industry. Whilst Brian feels the Shopping Centre industry is over-supplied, he still finds it exciting. Some of his most memorable projects include the expansion of Midlands Mall being involved from start to finish, the Eastgate extension and modernization project where the scale and cost of this project made it intense and Diamond Walk at Sandton City, a very successful addition to an already successful mall. JUDGING PANEL Colin Jonkers Portfolio Manager, REDEFINE PROPERTIES Colin has been Head of Retail and Operations for twenty-three years. He has contributed to a vibrant tenant mix for many great multibillion-rand developments and facilitated a host of retail projects in South Africa and other African countries. He enjoys the ability to conceptualise a shopping experience for shoppers, with a great retail mix and an effective and smooth retail operation on the ground. He describes the shopping centre industry with these words: “Passion, Customer-centric, Innovative’. Some of his favourite projects include the retail improvement for the new look Sun City, the Time Square Casino Pretoria development project retail setup, and the repositioning for Sun International Retail strategy across the group. Colin enjoys researching new retail trends and futuristic retail spaces. Danie de Goede BENTEL GROUP Danie recently joined The Bentel Group. He was previously a part of the Abcon Group for over 12 years and has been in the industry for over 20 years. He is currently part of the retail development team, looking after leasing and operations. Danie has worked on as many as 15 projects, all of these moulding his deal originating experience and other skill sets. He loves the synergy and excitement between delivering a good product to the market and seeing the customers and tenants enjoying and revelling in the space delivered. Danie enjoys the ability to deliver a project to the community and seeing the enjoyment it creates. He describes the industry as “Thriving on chaos” and is described as collaborative, passionate and reliable by his peers. Danie spends his free time with his family and keeping fit. Darryl Mayers Joint CEO, INVESTEC PROPERTY FUND Darryl was Head of Retail Developments and Head of South African Trading and Development at Investec Property for ten years and Joint CEO of Investec Property Fund for two years. A key moment was leading the project development team on Cornubia Mall, the largest regional mall that Investec Property has done. Darryl believes the Industry is highly dynamic and challenging, always changing. One has to be on point with trends, and balance that with practical long-lasting retail solutions. Some of his favourite projects include Mayfield Mall, The Square at the Neighbourhood , Cornubia Mayfield - regional mall in Daveyton. These projects were on point and meet the needs of an expanding community. Darryl likes to keep up to date with retail trends, fashion and homeware. He enjoys design, cycling, yoga, and time at the game reserve Derek Patrick CEO, TDC&CO Derek has been part of the retail design and building industry for 33 years. Entrepreneurial, nurturing and driven, he founded Boston School of Design before he founded TDC&Co some 25 years ago. Some highlights for Derek include the International store of the year awards for Woolworths in the early development of TDC&Co, the Global Shop store design of the year for Makro Riversands in 2018 and the creation of the @home brand, giving him the ability to drive TDC&Co as a company that thinks globally and acts locally in the creation of leading- edge retail design solutions. Some of his favourite projects include Checkers re-brand and evolution, Lifestyle Centre Ballito and Builders Warehouse. Derek loves being able to create retail environments that enhance the shopping experience. He describes the industry as dynamic, everchanging and unexpected. JUDGING PANEL Des Laubscher CEO, GREENSIDE DESIGN CENTER Over forty years of experience in retail design, Des founded his career through lecturing. Des has facilitated a host of project referrals in other African countries. He has been involved in professional bodies throughout his career. He has been the President of the International Federation of Interior Architects, Vice President of the International Council of Design, Founder of the African Institute for the Interior Design Professions and now President of the Pan African Design Institute. Des believes the customer experience is paramount and that can only happen with well trained staff and understanding the service industry. He loves the design experience and the touch points between the customer and the store service staff. He describe the Shopping Centre Industry with these three words: “Innovation, Experience, Convenience”. All of his favourite projects include restaurant design. Francois Bredenkamp Design Director, BOOGERTMAN + PARTNERS With over 15 years of experience, Francois joined Boogertman + Partners in 2005 and was appointed director in 2008. Boogertman + Partners has over 35 years’ experience and remains the largest architectural practise in Africa with active projects across the continent. Receiving recognition for The Club Retail Centre was a key moment for Francois where the constant evolution of retail and end user interface became apparent. Some of his favourite projects include Menlyn Maine Central Square, The Club Centre and Archimota Retail in Accra. All these projects had a relevant public conversation with the urban context and how people interface with the greater city. Francois enjoys the challenge of reinventing the design methodology and evolving retail design principles. He describes the industry with “Adaptability, Utility and Theatre”. Fancois enjoys travelling in his spare time. Fransa Schoombee Senior Architect, FRANZSEN ARCHITECTS Senior Architect at the Pretoria-based Franzsen Architects, which has primarily been involved with the design of Retail Centres and Commercial developments. Fransa has none years of experience in the Shopping Centre Industry. She has extensive experience of the development of Retail Centres from small rural developments to larger regional Shopping Centres in urban areas. As Architect for the Modimall Shopping Centre, winning the RDDA Category B award in 2014 was a career highlight for Fransa. Her favourite projects include Modimall, Southview Shopping Centre, Mahikeng Day Clinic. The social impact that retail developments have on communities and the huge difference that the Shopping Centre Industry makes in people’s everyday lives, by making necessities more accessible, is what excites Fransa and keeps her passionate about the retail industry. In her spare time, Fransa enjoys spending time with the family and cooking. Gavin Tagg Managing Director, RETAIL NETWORK SERVICES Gavin has more than thirty years of specialised experience in the retail property industry and has established himself as a thought leader in this competitive industry. He is passionate about attention to detail in the design layout and functionality of shopping centres, and his strategic retail development solutions result in a successful venture that create the best possible solution for developer, shopper and tenant. Gavin has a successful track record of developing shopping centres with high trading volumes, long standing tenants and high returns. His knowledge and expertise includes a unique understanding of the intricacies of crafting a tenant mix to meet the market needs and the multi- faceted disciplines of developing a successful shopping centre from conception to completion. JUDGING PANEL Hugh Fraser Media Manager, HUGH FRASER ARCHITECT Hugh Fraser is the Media Manager at Hugh Fraser Architect and has practiced as an architect for thirty years. He has travelled widely to research the built environment through photography and film. One of the things Hugh loves about the shopping centre industry is seeing how the electronic world is having an influence on retail design. He describes the industry with these words: “lifestyle, responsive and climate”. Known by his peers for being inquiring, opinionated and fun, he enjoys travel, photography and film in his free time. Itumeleng Mothibeli Managing Director: Southern Africa, VUKILE PROPERTY FUND Creative, innovative and analytical, Itumeleng comes with 14 years of experience on asset management working predominantly on retail property. Managing a portfolio of retail assets early in his career, he developed a passion and appreciation of how dynamic a shopping centre is and lessons on how each is unique in its own context. He enjoys the multi-disciplinary nature of the sector, and its vibrancy and constant evolution, describing the retail industry as “dynamic, multi-disciplinary, evolving”. Some of his favourite projects include Soweto Dobsonville, Maluti Crescent and Musgrave , very difficult builds at different stages of his career. In his free time, Itumeleng enjoys reading up on sociology, especially in the SA context and running marathons. Jason McCormick CEO, EXEMPLAR CEO of Exemplar and MD of McCormick Property since 2011. Growing up in a family of property developers, Jason has been exposed to business his entire life. He joined McCormick Property Development, family business in 2002, moved on to working on new developments, as well as working as an understudy on the Project Management Division. This provided insight into the political issues that accompany the development of new shopping centres within the ‘previously disadvantaged areas’. Jason has developed over 36 shopping centres in 16 years. He continues his deal making role at McCormick Property Development, alongside his responsibilities as managing director and now CEO at Exemplar. Each new deal sourced, and every development brought to life provides immense satisfaction. In his spare time, Jason enjoys time with the family, time in the Bush, photography, birdwatching, fly fishing, woodwork, flying and playing cricket. Jeffrey Cole Managing Partner, MESSARIS WAPENAAR COLE ARCHITECTS Jeffrey Cole is a professional architect, an industrial process planning expert, and the managing partner at Messaris Wapenaar Cole Architects and Blue Tangerine Interiors. He is also a partner in the Brisbane based practice of Messaris Wapenaar Cole Husband Architects and the transformation practice of Array Architects. Jeffrey has commercial background in architecture as well as a deep understanding of industrial process flow and this ensures his input is highly sought after by many global companies. He has worked extensively across the African continent on many of the continent’s premier projects such as the Moatize Coal and the Nacala rail and port projects. He describes the Shopping Centre Industry as empowering, communal and embracing. He loves how the industry creates employment and commercial opportunity for people. JUDGING PANEL Jocelyn Rhodes Principal Architect/Owner, FORMSPACECONTENT Jocelyn has practiced architecture for over 20 years. Working as an advisor and design consultant to some of the top landlords in the country. She believes that relationships are the key to generating appropriate retail design spaces, from the relationship of the architect to the landlord, to the relationship of the end-user to the space itself. With a deep commitment to heritage architecture, she has had the opportunities to combine old and new to work on some challenging restoration projects. She has vast experience in SAPOA measurement methods and is a consultant to numerous brands, landlords and retailers. Jocelyn loves the opportunity to positively influence the retail experience for the user while ensuring the owner enjoys returns and longevity. Reading, drawing, walking and being outdoors, and spending time with the family are things she enjoys in her free time. Ken Reynolds Retired Regional Executive, NEDBANK (Consultant) Ken has thirty years of experience in financing and investing in commercial property. A highlight in his career was being part of the development team for the Clearwater Mall from land acquisition to completion, from which he gained a strong understanding of what makes a retail centre work. He then moved on to finance and invest in numerous further retail properties. Ken believes that there is a difference in every opportunity which needs to be identified in order to maximise the effectiveness of the scheme. Some of his favourite projects include Clearwater which was his first major project, Nedbank Head Office, Phase 2 being the first Green star rated project in SA and Leonardo as an Iconic development. He describes the Shopping Centre Industry as fluid, challenging and innovative. In his spare time, Ken enjoys cycling and water sports. Livia Coetzee-Stein Creative Executive & Director, DHQ INTERIOR | BRAND | ARCHITECTS Livia is the Creative Executive at DHQ and for more than 14 years she has been designing for many of South Africa’s blue-chip companies, focusing largely on the hospitality and retail sector. As DHQ’s Creative Executive, she is responsible for leading a team of designers to develop and implement innovative interior design concepts for both local and international brands. Working with the Westfield team in the UK during a project for Gourmet Burger Kitchen at Westfield Stratford was a highlight for Livia. Livia enjoys creating bespoke designs that enhance the customer experience, working with multiple restaurant brands, providing design solutions that connects back to brand strategy with the end user in mind. She describes the industry as “Customized, Experiential and Entertaining.” When not at work, she enjoys time with the family. Michael Clampett Head of Asset and Property Management Retail, ATTACQ LIMITED Michael Clampett is Head of Asset and Property Management Retail at Attacq Limited. He is responsible for growing and maintaining the retail real estate assets, deal making and innovation. Some of the things he enjoys about the shopping centre industry is that it is ever changing and involves a deep understanding of people and trends which he finds very stimulating. A highlight of Michael’s career was being involved in the opening of the Mall of Africa. JUDGING PANEL Mireille Koster Senior Architect, ARCHIWAY ARCHITECTS Over eighteen years of experience as a Senior Architect working on retail property development. Mireille loves creating comfortable and well-designed spaces for customers to shop, incorporating natural light, easy access, and parking. Some of her favourite projects include Festival Mall Shopping Centre cinema extensions, Elukwatini Shopping Centre, challenging because of local community interference and the slope of the land making the design a real challenge and Phola Mall, designing the centre for the local community and incorporating natural light where possible. These projects have equipped Mireille with great insight and skills to design and execute refurbishments and new centres, leading to new projects and better relationships with tenants. She describes the Industry as exciting, forever adapting, and challenging. In her free time, Mireille enjoys mountain biking, road cycling, travelling to learn and get inspiration from foreign cities and cultures. Paul Simpson Owner, RETAIL PROPERTY STRATEGIES Paul moved from architecture and construction to retail property and has spent over 30 years in retail property, including heading up the Real Estate division of Woolworths for the greater part and was involved in over 300 shopping centres. Paul enjoys the continuous challenge and describes the Shopping Centre industry as a “Revolution in process”. Projects he holds close to his heart include the Stillborn Moafrica development, as this allowed him to explore an enormous range of new ideas and shaped a lot of his future thinking. Clearwater Mall was his first “race track” mall design and Piazza St John, Cape Town which successfully explored a small mixed use concept to great financial success. In his free time, Paul enjoys mountain biking, motor racing and traveling the world to try to work out where retail is going. Paul Symondson Executive, SVA ARCHITECTS More than thirty years as a Senior Architect working on Retail and Mixed Use property development in the UK, South Africa and throughout the African continent. Paul enjoys being part of the industry and member in a variety of development teams that deliver essential and memorable customer experiences across diverse cultures and communities. He describes the industry with these words: “Collaboration, Community, Experience.” Some of his favourite projects include Broadacres Shopping Centre, challenging the norms of convenience and lifestyle retail, Mooirivier Mall, combining a traditional High Street and Regional mall retail design in a unique natural environment built around a river and Ado Bayero Mall, Kano, Nigeria where the challenge of designing and delivering the first 20,000m2 mall in Northern Nigeria at the height of Boko Haram insurgency. In his free time, Paul enjoys reading, travel and nature. Pierre Lahaye Partner, MDS ARCHITECTURE Pierre joined MDS Architecture in 1997, after graduating with distinctions in Design and Professional Practice from Wits, and after having gained valuable experience working and travelling in Europe and Africa. His commitment to excellence in design and professional practice, has allowed him to successfully lead the professional team towards the completion of a variety of projects, including shopping centres, to the highest architectural and building standards. Pierre enjoys the dynamic nature of the industry that is continually evolving. He describes the Shopping Centre Industry as Innovative, trendsetting, and dynamic. Some of his favourite projects include Paarl Mall, Morningside Shopping Centre, and Mall of the North. Receiving the RDDA Award for Morningside Shopping Centre and the Spectrum Award for Mall of the North were key moments for Pierre. JUDGING PANEL Raakhee Sukha-Nathoo Senior Architectural Technologist & Director, MEA Raakhee is a Senior Architectural Technologist & Director at MEA, a full-service architecture practice with close to half a century’s worth of experience in design, draughting, and construction, specialising in the implementation of franchise-based projects across the African continent. With over 15 years of experience in QSR, she is known as a leader who continuously develops methods and processes to streamline processes and increase productivity. Raakhee is assertive and enthusiastic, with an unsurpassed work ethic and is described by her peers as energetic, analytical and creative. In her spare time, Raakhee enjoys reading. Richard O Sullivan Director, RETAIL AFRICA Richard has been part of the South African Real Estate Industry since 1991. He joined Anglo American Property Services and went on to become their youngest Leasing Director responsible for their Retail, Commercial and Industrial portfolios. Subsequent to Broll Property Group acquiring Anglo American Property Services, he was appointed Managing Director of Broll Retail. In 2006 Richard left Corporate to join Retail Africa as Partner responsible for leasing of their new Projects and existing Portfolio. Currently he is dividing his time between securing New Development opportunities and leasing Retail Africa’s substantial Development Pipeline. He has a love for all things Retail, the fast pace of Johannesburg, a passion for exotic cars and pursuing the next deal. Robyn Self Creative Director & Owner, PLAN-IT Robyn has spent twenty years running a Design Practice as Interior Designer and business owner working on commercial, hospitality and retail design projects. She was appointed as Director of the IID and has been on the RDDA Judges committee for the past four years, allowing her to gain insight into the day to day design challenges that South African Design firms face as well as additional exposure to various other design fields. Some of her favourite projects include The International Bank of Liberia, Comic Warehouse and ABSA Cape Epic Official Logo Store. Whilst she enjoys the complexity of large commercial interior projects, she enjoys the quicker turn-around time involved in Retail Design and Shopfitting. She describes the industry as challenging, evolving and innovative. In her free time, Robyn enjoys camping and travel. Susan Terblanche Senior Interior Designer & Partner, REDDECO Susan has six years in Senior Interior Design. She enjoys the ability to be part of team that strives to create a memorable experience, whether it be with the bespoke interior design of shops, restaurants or restrooms within a shopping centre. To be able to add to the shopping centre unique experience. She describes the industry as creative and innovative. A key moment in her experience was redesigning the Woodlands Boulevard Restroom Blocks. Some of her favourite projects include Atterbury Properties head office, Nando’s Kyalami Corner Drive Thru and Nando’s Bryanston. She loves watching food shows, finding new design inspiration for projects and researching trends nationally and internationally in the design, fashion and food fields. CATEGORY A WINNER NEW DEVELOPMENTS Stimela Crossing 13 510 m² Mpumalanga Boogertman + Partners Architect Masingita Properties Developer Masingita Properties Shopping Centre Owner STIMELA CROSSING is a new neighbourhood centre incorporating a new food store, local shops and takeaway food yet achieving 97% national tenant line up. The centre is part open part covered with an attractive external, but covered, restaurant area. The imaginative use of repurposed shipping containers and vibrant ‘green’ colour branding has produced a practical and enticing solution which is reproducible across multiple sites.
