View it in a browser DELIVERING THE PROMISE OF SYDNEY MARCH 2019 INSPIRING PEOPLE Pastoralist women in Northern Tanzania The Pastoral Women’s Council was founded in 1997 by ten Maasai women, including the current Executive Director Maanda Ngoitiko. Maanda Ngoitiko is a Maasai from the Ngorongoro district of northern Tanzania. Her family are traditional pastoralists. In the early years, the PWC worked on forming women's’ solidarity groups and initiating community fundraisers to start microcredit activities and to support girls’ education in the Loliondo area. Read more INSPIRING PLACES Isla San Pedro Mártir Biosphere Reserve This Mexican Biosphere Reserve is one of the best- preserved sites in the Gulf of California (Sea of Cortez), has great scientific relevance and should be considered a natural laboratory of adaptation and evolution. It hosts a has great biological richness, with 292 species of flora and fauna, both marine and terrestrial, of which 42 species are protected under Mexican law, 30 on the IUCN Red List, and 36 in CITES. Forest Landscape Restoration in the Shouf The Shouf Biosphere Reserve, a Green-listed site, designed and implemented its own Forest Landscape Restoration Project. This led to the production of briquettes, distributed to the local communities for heating, the production of compost, the restoration of abandoned stonewall terraces, and providing access and water for fire-fighting, charcoal production, and grazing as a method of controlling re-sprouting. En savoir plus GREEN LIST IUCN lists 6 more new sites as world’s best protected areas IUCN has admitted 6 new natural sites to the IUCN Green List of Protected and Conserved Areas – the first global standard recognising best practice in protected areas. Sites in France and Mexico received the certification at a meeting of the IUCN Green List Committee, bringing the total number of sites on the IUCN Green List to 46. Read more
Sharing experiences with the IUCN Green List in Africa Five African countries are now implementing the IUCN Green List initiative: Kenya was the pilot country in 2014, followed by Benin in 2016, Cote d’Ivoire in 2017, and Madagascar and Nigeria in 2018. In order to build a Green List network in Africa dedicated to sharing successful conservation solutions throughout the continent, there is a strong need for collaboration. PROTECTED PLANET 60th birthday of the World Database on Protected Areas The World Database on Protected Areas (WDPA) is the most comprehensive global database of protected areas, updated on a monthly basis, and is one of the key global biodiversity data sets used widely by scientists, businesses, governments, Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs), and many more, to inform planning, policy decisions and management. Read more PANORAMA PANORAMA wins IUCN “One Programme” Impact Award Often, lessons learnt from conservation and sustainable development initiatives are not well captured and shared to inform future planning. Means and tools for practitioners to benefit from learning about similar experiences across sectors and geographies are under-developed. PANORAMA – Solutions for a Healthy Planet addresses this gap by supporting peer-learning from existing solutions, earning it the 2018 IUCN Impact Award in the “One Programme” category. Read more GOVERNANCE Exploring conserved areas in Viet Nam The decision late last year by the Parties to the CBD to recognise “conserved areas” is stimulating new conversations at the national level on diverse forms of nature conservation taking place outside protected areas. In March 2019, the IUCN Global Protected Areas Programme and the IUCN Hanoi office convened a national stakeholder workshop on these very topics. Read more
Good governance is the key to success The recent assessment using the IUCN Green List Standard has illuminated a unique natural and cultural landscape in Van Long Wetland Nature Reserve in Viet Nam. The initial focus of the Green list examined the governance aspects: the decision makers, their processes and how others can get involved in the decision making for Van Long, but also examines the history, culture and land uses from both local village residents and other stakeholders. Read more State of World’s Biodiversity for Food and Agriculture The UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) has ) recently published the State of World’s Biodiversity for Food and Agriculture. IUCN provided inputs, through analysis of The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species™ of species for human food and the extent to which species used for food are located within protected areas. IUCN’s analysis finds that over 98% of species used for human food (95% of threatened species) are “covered” by protected areas (i.e. a predetermined percentage of a species geographic range is within protected areas). These can relate to any aspect of management or governance: financing, tourism, enforcement etc. Please submit your solution on the “protected areas” portal of the PANORAMA web platform Solutions will then be reviewed and published on the platform. Selected “solution providers” will be invited to present their cases in a public webinar on 24th April. Submit your solution New MOOC by IUCN PAPACO On 4 March 2019, IUCN-PAPACO launched yet another session of their MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses). The usual selection (Protected area management, Ecological monitoring, Law enforcement and Species conservation) now includes a brand-new MOOC on the Valorisation of protected area resources and Sustainable tourism. The goal of this new course is to know how the valorisation of different protected area resources can take place, and to understand protected area valorisation through tourism. Registration are open until 1 June 2019. This is an exciting opportunity for a dynamic, regionally active organisation that shares the mission of BIOPAMA and is interested in becoming part of and helping to shape, the development of the Regional Observatory and supporting the delivery of its core functions.
