Commodore’s Message Greetings Members, The Holiday Season is officially upon us as we recently celebrated Thanksgiving. The First Lady and I had dinner at the Club, and we were not disappointed with our meal. Turkey, ham, oysters and all the fixings, plus many wonderful desserts including S’mores!! Thank you, John and Susan, R/C Gary and Board Member Pam for joining us for a wonderful evening. Lest I forget, a big thanks to the BYC Staff for preparing a delicious meal for all to enjoy. Want to know the best part? No cleanup, and we got to take home leftovers! On Saturday, the volunteer corps of BYC descended upon the Clubhouse to transform it into a Christmas wonderland. Organized groups oversaw the decoration of the dining room, bar area, entrance, and lounge. Each officer decorated their tree with a special theme, and as evening came and the lights were lit, it looked beautiful. Thanks to the usual volunteers and the newbies for all that you do for our Club. On Saturday evening, many members joined together to have dinner and enjoy the Middle River Lighted Boat Parade. The weather the previous two days did not look favorable, but by evening the winds abated, and we all got to enjoy the show. Special thanks to Captain Mike Dunn and crew who participated in the parade with his beautifully decorated boat. Christmas will be here soon, and there will be many activities to enjoy before the Club takes a break for our annual shutdown. This will occur after Christmas and last into early January. Look in the Weekly Update and also consult your trifold for more information regarding this. Before I sign off, I would like to remind the membership to consider giving a special gift to our hard-working staff. Remember, they work while we play and without their dedication, it would not be nearly as much fun. First Lady Karen and I would like to acknowledge the hard work of our staff, management, and everyone who volunteers to help make BYC such a great Club. Without them, our Club would just be ordinary. They truly make it special. Happy Chanukah, Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year from our home to yours!! Commodore Bill and First Lady Karen
Vice Commodore’s Message Brrr, it’s cold outside and the fire is roaring. Santa is on his or her way and I am sure I will be handsomely rewarded by Sam this year because I have been really good all year long! No, really, I have been good, I promise! I sure hope everyone at BYC is happy and healthy and waiting to see what is on the agenda for December and January. What an exciting time it is, getting new fuel tanks, it doesn’t get any better than that, (yea right)! On a lighter note, the piers are just about completed and plans to improve the pool are well underway. Spring is just around the corner and if you look closely, you can see it just past the snow drifts and ice on the parking lot. As Vice Commodore it is my responsibility to encourage members to volunteer to commit one year of their life to be literary geniuses and take on the thankless task of “PIER WRITER”. I am in search of a pier writer to cover the news for piers A and B. Now don’t everyone submit their resumes just yet. All you need to do is send me an email, letter, telephone call or grab me at the bar and we can discuss your contract as “Pier Writer 2022”. I will even buy you a drink of your choice. I am not above bribery, but I do have my limits. Seriously, if you are interested, please let me know and you can get started as soon as possible. BYC is continuing to get inquiries about membership. Remember this year we will be adjusting membership numbers and printing a roster book in early spring. We are all going to move up on the list in search of that magic number 101. Thanksgiving dinner at BYC was a success and the reports were, Scott Lockwood, Chef Eric, and the BYC Staff put on another wonderful feast for the members. Thanks for attending and supporting the club. The turnout for Trim the Clubhouse Day was the best on record! There were so many members contributing to decorating it is impossible to single anyone out but WOW, what a great event. As the resident reindeer, I would also add that the Children’s Christmas Party was a great success and would be remised if I did not thank Debbie and Wayne for all their work and commitment ensuring the children had a wonderful time. Santa put in a full day’s work in a few hours, what a trooper! Sam and I want to thank everyone for supporting the club through their Holiday Greetings and photographs. Jack and Nancy Peters were awesome again taking photos throughout the entire day and during the Lighted Boat Parade. Their contribution to BYC is off the charts. Please remember the management and staff this holiday season. They provide opportunity throughout the year for all of us to enjoy the club with our friends and family in a great atmosphere. The good times at BYC are made better by their work ethic and enthusiasm and interaction with every member. Thank you all! Vice Commodore Keith Lessner
Rear Commodore’s Message Oh Another Spray article due already!! Once again, I’m happy to have nothing but good news to report. Our winter redecking project is well underway and the progress looks great. Special thanks to all the members who got their vessels relocated by the end of October so the project could begin on time. Big shout out also goes to all the members who showed up to assist with pier winterization day. Everyone worked hard, got the job done, and enjoyed a hearty lunch in clubhouse. FC Eric, I’m happy to report “the thing” has been properly returned to its secret location for you to carry on the mysterious “thing duty” next year. As a reminder over the coming months, be mindful of slippery conditions on and around the piers and if you are wintering in the water, be sure your lines are properly tied to handle the extreme tides and other weather conditions that can adversely affect the safety of our boats and club property. I’m sure Donnie and his team will do a great job watching out for the basin, but please do your part to make the Dock Teams job as safe as possible over the winter. As the Grinch so eloquently said, “Maybe Christmas doesn’t come for a store. Maybe Christmas perhaps means a little bit more.” Be it Christmas, Hanukkah, or whatever holiday you choose to celebrate, the holiday season is not about anything that comes from a store. The holiday season is about exactly what we are so fortunate to enjoy at BYC every day of the year – fun, friendship, and family. As the holiday season approaches, I want to take this opportunity to wish all my “BYC family” a happy, healthy holiday season and a 2022 filled with peace and prosperity. Happy Holidays, RC Gary Blankenship
Fleet Captain’s Message Seasons Greetings Everyone! I am writing this the week after Thanksgiving and looking back on the past couple of months as Fleet Captain I really don't know where the time is going! While time is flying by these days I'm pleased to report many things are well underway in planning for the year's entertainment. We are securing stops for the cruises, booking bands, and planning all kinds of fun events to carry us through much of 2022. We are excited to start sharing as the plans unfold; mixing tradition with bits of new and old. Please keep your eyes open for emails from the club which is our primary means of communication to get items out quickly and reminders too. As we open up registrations for the cruises we invite you to sign up early so we can do our best to accommodate as many in the BYC community as possible. The more the merrier!! In closing, my family would like to wish all of you a Happy Hanukkah, a very Merry Christmas, and a prosperous New Year. We are so grateful to have BYC as our extended family and wish all of you the very best in the year to come! And plenty of entertainment!! Sincerely, F/C Eric Hiemstra* fcbyc22@gmail.com 443-904-3807 *(Heem-stra) lol
Mates President’s Message Happy Holidays! November was a wonderful month for the Club with all the activities including the Fall Fest, Bull Roast, Thanksgiving, Decorating the Club and the Parade of Lights. The Club came through with events for the young and older alike. The Angel Tree participation was overwhelmingly and graciously exciting, all of the one hundred and one children were adopted! The Mates will be wrapping the gifts on Friday the 3rd and delivering them on the 4th in time for delivery by Christmas, to the Salvation Army. If you can help to deliver the toys, please contact, Patty Garey at 410-574-6548 or shiftyb@aol.com. Thank you very much to everyone who contributed to this wonderful cause. Without the help of our members, these children would not be able to experience the magic of Christmas this year. We're still collecting non-perishables for St. John's Church who has partnered with Peace Lutheran Church as well as Grace Lutheran Church in New Orleans to collect items for this year’s hurricane devastation. They will be leaving Essex on December 13th to deliver to New Orleans. Please contact Deb Penczek for information *410-808-5185 or email debbiepenczek@comcast.net+. Patty Garey is still accepting school supplies, toiletries and winter warmth items for Deep Creek Elementary School. Please find a place in your heart to contribute. Patty can be contact at *410-574-6548 or shiftyb@aol.com+. I want to thank the Mates for the support they're given to the elderly folks at my assisted living. Patty Garey spearheaded this effort as well. Please come and join us at a meeting. We meet the first Friday of every month at 8:30pm. We seek your input, ideas and efforts to help maintain BYC as the premier club on The Bay. Meetings are also broadcast via Zoom. Please contact IPP Sara Tennyson for details on participating via Zoom *410-812-1589 or tennyson@jhu.edu+. Last but every bit as important, I seek support for our Princess Gabby Hiemstra, with her chosen charity; John's Hopkins Children Center of Neurosurgery. They have a special place in her heart after the outstanding work they did to aid her sister Cassie. Let's all rally around and help Gabby promote awareness and donate to her cause. I wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and Hanukkah, as well as a wonderful and uneventful New Year! Always yours, President Ruthie
Princess Gabby Message Hello Everyone! Happy Holidays to all! I hope everyone enjoyed their Thanksgiving. I definitely enjoyed having time off of school to enjoy family and friends. It’s been quite a transition from being at the club almost every day for the summer to now only seeing everyone at special events or for dinner. However, the Bull & Oyster Roast Casino night was so much fun with seeing everyone again. Thanks to everyone who helped and to those who attended. It would not have been as exceptional without you. I am excited for all of the holiday events that are going on in December at the Club. It will be great to see all of the children running around the club again for the Children’s Christmas Brunch with Santa on December 4. Then I’ll see everyone at the Caroling and Dinner event on December 12. If you haven’t seen the Club all ‘trimmed-up” then you need to come down. It looks fabulous. As we always reflect during Thanksgiving, I wanted to share how grateful we are to be a part of such a great organization as the BYC. Everyone has welcomed us with open arms and so many of you have made donations to the charities I chose to support. I would also like to ask that if you are looking for making an end-of-year donation for tax purposes then please consider giving to: The Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation Online: https://team.curethekids.org/gabbyh and/or The Johns Hopkins Children’s Center – Department of Neurosurgery Online: https://secure.jhu.edu/form/neurosrg Designate Pediatric Neurosurgery under “Programs” Enter “BYC” in “Comments” By mail: The Fund for Johns Hopkins Medicine Department of Neurosurgery, Attn: Amy Bortner 550 N. Broadway, 7th Floor Suite 728 Baltimore, MD 21205 My family and I have been painting 20 of the crab shells from the crab feast as BYC ornaments. I’m hoping to have them at the club for sale. All of the proceeds will be split equally and go to these charities. Please consider buying one! To date we have donated over $1850 to these charities since October!!!! Not-so-fun fact: 1 in 285 children will develop cancer before the age of 20, and brain tumors are both the most common and deadliest in kids under 15. With those odds, it's likely a child you know will be or has been impacted by a pediatric brain cancer diagnosis. And if you’ve met my sister Cassie, then you already know someone impacted by a brain tumor. I hope that everyone has a great holiday season!!! If you enjoy these events as much as my family does, then please be sure to get involved. Our members and our staff are what make our club special! Princess Gabby

A Holiday Greeting Twas the Holiday Season, all thru the clubhouse, Not a creature was stirring, except the club mouse The trees and the rooms were decorated with care In hopes that the Members soon would be there The boats were all nestled in their snug winter beds All was shut down, cockpits, cabins and heads We entered the gate, and went up the hill A cool winter night, so quiet and still From the Chesapeake Room there arose such a clatter I ran thru the doors to see what was the matter Voices and music was filling the room PC John, on his piano, was playing a tune The members were caroling songs in the night The Five days of Christmas, (just seven days light) They all sang together, with laughter and cheer Voices over the water, a true wonder to hear The moon as is shone on the water so still A mirror reflection, as seen from the hill When what to my wondering eyes should appear Ten tiny PC’s, each touting a beer Now Wojo, now Frankie, Jay, Barry and Connie There’s Dicky, Frank Garey, and Joe, Bob & Scotty At the end of the bar, their glasses raised tall Look, there’s PC Mike Bruns, leaning up on to the wall When all of a sudden, I heard such a noise Oh, it’s just Fleet Captain Eric with six girls and one boy There’s Rear Commodore Gary and Vice Commodore Keith With Commodore Bill, by the big Christmas Wreath All dressed in their Blues, official and strong They entered the room, and joined in the song When we sang our last note, we all cheered our endeavor Knowing moments like this, is what keeps us together Each person unique, each person their own Brought together, like family, this club is a home The sounds of the Season, the meaning so clear Happy Holidays to all, and a Happy New Year PC Wayne A. Penczek - 2015
C Pier Report Happy Holidays everyone!! This is a crazy busy time of year and I don’t have a whole lot of news. Shari Zakielarz let me know that she is expecting grand baby number two in the spring. More to come on that! There was a good turn out of C Pier folks to help Trim the Club house. The Commodore’s tree turned out just beautiful thanks to Celeste Klima and Jill Davis’ (E Pier) help and design expertise. FC Eric and Lady Tristan Hiemstra put up a beautiful peacock tree! The Princess’ tree that PFL Marge Ragone decorated look pretty in pink! RC Gary Blankenship’s Grinch tree looks just great!! I can’t not mention VC Keith and Sam Lessner’s fun “Santa is on Vacation” tree. Beautiful and the Santas are just the best!! I hope everyone will have a chance to get to the club during December to see how beautiful it looks!! And finally, C Pier’s own Mike “Hobbit” made us all so proud with his beautifully decorated boat in the Middle River Lighted Boat Parade! I hope everyone has a safe and happy holiday season!! Pat Meredith
D Pier Report Ahoy D Pier and BYC Shipmates! Tis the season to be jolly and make merry, so hopefully you all are doing just that while most of our boats take a long winters nap. Not all our vessels are sleeping. As of this article, Lenora and Ron Stern (D 8), aboard JOINT VENTURE, were in South Port, NC as they make their way toward winter in Florida. Their intended next stop is Georgetown, SC, a lovely spot on the water that many people don’t know about. Their boat will remain there until mid-January so that they can spend the holidays in Maryland and Pennsylvania (being colder than they would prefer). Ron reports that their final stop will be “destination WARM! – likely somewhere in Florida”. The Sterns would like their BYC shipmates to know that anyone heading south should give them a call because they would enjoy welcoming you for a little hospitality. Also out and about this winter is TIDE OVER, which is hiding out from the cold in Loblolly Marina on Hobe sound (15 mi north of Jupiter Florida). The Jupiter, FL coastal area, along with beautiful Jupiter inlet, is a boater’s paradise. Ted Goloboski reports that, although he can’t stay the whole winter, he will be visiting his vessel down there regularly! Well, looks like that’s all for 2021. May you all have the Happiest of Holidays, the Merriest of Christmases, and a Wonderful and Prosperous Year in 2022! Until next time, see you on D Pier. Joe Hellner TIDE OVER nestled in its winter home on Hobe Sound near Jupiter, FL
Recently Dredged Travelift Area Now Plenty Water!!!
Sue Island Sue The Fall has been a busy time on the Island and it's beginning to look a lot like Christmas!! The lighted boat parade was great - a fire pit for the spectators and our own Hobbit participated! The clubhouse is beautiful. The officers never disappoint with their trees. It will be great to see all the kids (young and old) enjoying Santa. I wish you all the happiest of holiday seasons. Enjoy the time with your family and friends. "see" you all in the New Year! Sue Island Sue Kilroy November certainly started off with a bang! Could that have been the combined sounds of a roulette wheel, the throw of dice, and the cha-ching of the slot machines on Casino Night? Who knew BYC had so many enthusiastic gamblers? The crowds at the Blackjack tables were a testament to this. Maybe they were invigorated by feasting on bull and oysters. Winter is coming! Boats are gone, and the piers were winterized with no reported mishaps. Was it the cold weather or the pink stuff that limited the beer drinking at the winterization luncheon? With the ongoing pier construction, there’s not much opportunity for Kilroy to snoop around unnoticed. Thanks to the efforts of so many elves, the Clubhouse is trimmed to perfection. And, what better place to enjoy the Lighted Boat Parade than our prime location on top of the hill. Kilroy is looking forward to hearing and sharing the Club’s gossip in 2022. Happy Holidays and a great New Year.
Manager’s Message Happy Holidays! We welcome in the holiday season as we prepare the Club to enjoy the Christmas and Hanukkah holidays with our family and friends. Thank you to all the members who showed up to decorate the clubhouse for the season. The Club looked festive as we kicked off the holiday season with the Middle River Lighted Boats Parade. It is heartwarming to see such strong support for the Mates Angel Tree initiative once again. We are grateful for the Mates, led by the Chairperson for the Angel Tree campaign, Patty Garey. We are thankful for their efforts and the meaningful impact of this and their other charitable efforts in our surrounding community. Our team is looking forward to a busy holiday season. We look forward to our traditional Club events like the Children's Brunch with Santa and our Christmas Dinner and Caroling. However, our team is also working on some special nights scattered into the month. We are planning a Christmas on the Island night for Thursday, December 16th, including live steel drum Christmas music. Additionally, we will host a New Year's Eve dinner later in the month. Please keep an eye out for flyers on these events and others we will be adding. I hope everyone enjoys a happy and safe holiday season with their family and friends. I wish you all the best in the New Year as we look forward to a busy and prosperous 2022! Cheers, Scott Lockwood, CCM
