Physical Weather Lack of connectivity Finding good cycle routes Painted lines offer no protection Pollution from motor vehicles Too much traffic - danger from cars Bike storage facilities Poorly maintained roads - potholes, small stones etc. Official off-road trails Not enough safe routes for families Confusing signage Lack of good quality, dedicated cycle lanes Tram track Lack of showers after commute Not being able to take bikes on trams Dog walkers without dogs on leads
Social/Economic Bike Theft Lack of enforcement of laws Harassment of cyclists (primarily by drivers) Attitude that it is a ‘poor mans’ way to travel and cars journeys are quicker Perception you need specialist clothing/equipment Aggressive anti-cycling narrative by national press Lack of bike maintenance knowledge Education on how (and where) to cycle safely Bicycle Cost Repair and accessory cost
Personal Challenges Finding time Lack of confidence Lack of physical fitness Lack of Motivation Age and/or disability
What other cycling-related initiatives would you like to see here in Broxtowe? What considerations should we have when designing new or adding to existing cycle paths?
Infrastructure More, segregated, safe cycle routes that link up to each other - not just painted lines Analysis of cycle journeys ensuring safe end-to-end cycle routes - tested by real cyclists More secure areas to lock bikes, especially in high streets and shopping areas More official off-road mountain bike trails
Initiatives A scheme where you can by a second-hand reconditioned bike Ensure that people are informed of good cycle routes A ‘myth busting’ campaign to try and reduce abuse directed at cyclists Make travelling to school by bike safer and more attractive Creating long-term cycling plans rather than short-term initiatives
Policing and the Law More CCTV and prosecution of bike thieves & bike coding events More enforcement of road safety laws
During COVID-19 38% of people cycled more 39% of people walked more 94% will continue this after Source: Department for Transport, National Travel Attitudes Survey (Wave 4 - October 2020)
