Dear friends, Welcome to our annual Danni’s Diary newsletter. We will give you a glimpse of life at your local children’s hospice, and show you what your generous donations have paid for. It’s fair to say that 2020 hasn’t been what any of us expected. We started the year on a high with the news that we had been rated Outstanding at our CQC inspection. The paint was only just dry on our million-pound refurbishment of the building, and we were still glowing with pride after being being voted the national JustGiving Awards’ Charity of the Year. Then in March COVID struck and the world changed. One thing that didn’t change, however, was the care we offered to our children and their families. That never faltered for a second. Despite our events cancelled and the income from our shops grinding to a halt, we remained open to our families when they needed us most. We helped them through some of the toughest and most isolating times they have experienced. We not only pulled together as a team to change the way we offer services (check out page 7 to find out how we got our grandparents on Zoom!) but we’ve also worked really hard to add new services, to help out our local NHS, and to attract new families from further afield. The ways we raise money has had to change. But crisis has brought innovation, with some creative fundraising escapades that have given us a lift and proved that our supporters are always there when we need them most. So thank you to everyone who continues to support us despite things being uncertain for all of us right now. No matter what happens as we continue to find a ‘new normal’, we will remain committed to being the leading light in children’s palliative and end-of-life care in the UK and will always strive to ensure that the life of every child in the North West matters. ’ s ow n e o L ock d L COVID stopped Leo from walking his mum down the aisle… so he walked the British Isles for Derian instead! Inspirational teenager Leo Cliffe made the most of his lockdown, raising a whopping £6,400 for Derian House by walking the length of the British Isles on a treadmill in his garage. The 19-year-old from Coppull was disappointed after the pandemic meant he couldn’t walk mum Vicky down the aisle when her wedding to stepdad Scott in April was cancelled. But undeterred, the plucky teen decided to walk the length of the British Isles instead to raise money for the charity which helps him. “I really enjoyed raising money for Derian because the hospice holds a special place in my heart,” said Leo, who took to his treadmill every day and – with the help of his friends – clocked up more than 1,000 miles. Leo has health problems caused by a rare congenital disorder called Williams Syndrome, which affects one in every 20,000 4 people in the UK.
Although his condition has given Leo It was even Leo’s idea for his mum to some extraordinary gifts – he is friendly, propose during a dream holiday to funny and has a flair for music - it has Florida during which Vicky got down on also led to heart and kidney failure, and one knee on the last day to ask Scott to Leo has had more than 50 operations marry her. since birth. Thankfully, hope came in the form of Leo comes to Derian House for respite pioneering surgery and in March, 2017, stays in The Lodge, where young adults Leo travelled to Great Ormond Street can enjoy their independence in a Hospital in London for a double kidney supported environment. autotransplant (which involves moving the kidneys to a different part of the body). The operation was a success, and although more health problems followed, including heart failure which resulted in open heart bypass surgery, the trio stuck together through thick and thin. I really enjoyed raising money for Derian because the hospice holds a special place in my heart “Scott has been our rock,” said Vicky. “He took us both on knowing what the future held and supported me through my darkest days of Leo being on life support. Although Leo’s condition remains life-limiting, he is here, and there’s nothing more I want in the world than to have him at my side while The wedding day would have been made I marry my soul-mate.” all the more poignant for the fact that in The wedding will now take place in 2015, Vicky was told her son - 15 at the April, 2021. time - was unlikely to make it to his next birthday. It was around then that Scott, You can still donate to an old school friend, got back in touch Leo’s fundraiser here: and love blossomed. Our million pound makeover... T op class facilities including a sensory room, messy play zone and cinema have been unveiled as part of a £1.4million makeover at Derian House Children’s Hospice. In 2018 we began a huge project to make the hospice “fit for the future” so we could continue to care for children with increasingly complex conditions for many years to come. Walls were knocked down and the hospice was remodelled into a lighter, brighter and more flexible space, with the very latest technology added. The work has transformed the building into a state-of-the-art facility which puts it at the pinnacle of children’s palliative care in the UK and will improve the respite and end-of-life care received by more than 400 children from the region. Children’s Bedrooms Sensory Room PlayZone What’s new? • PlayZone (sponsored by AO Smile) with a large sensory room with ball pit and a messy play area for arts and crafts. • £100,000 cinema room which allows families to relax and watch the latest releases together. • Accessible kitchen (donated by Red Sea Pedestrians) allows the young adults to bake or fix themselves a snack. • Cutting-edge technology has been added to rooms to give the youngsters greater independence - including special sensors on doors for wheelchair users and 8 smart speakers in all bedrooms.

VOLUNTEERS 13,979 Hours of volunteering saved us £115,000 in wages! 183 Regular volunteers WE NEED YOU! Volunteers are the lifeblood of Derian House, we simply couldn’t operate without them. Our 183 volunteers do everything from answering phones to running our charity shops – and we always need more help. Jill’s quarter century of help Jill Pullin, 78, has volunteered at Derian for 25 years doing every job you can think of – from manning reception to starting a popular tea and cake trolley round. Her sewing skills are in high demand and over the years she’s shortened more curtains and made more giant T-shirts for teddy bears than she could care to remember. “I always say with volunteering, you get so much more out of it than you put in. I’ve made so many friends and had such laughs. I wouldn’t change it for the world.” 10 Interested in volunteering for Derian House Children’s Hospice? 20 News Derian News The latest news from Derian House Children’s Hospice Brea 20 k New ing s Helping our very youngest lives Families of sick babies facing an uncertain future are getting more help than ever, thanks to your donations. Derian’s perinatal service was launched in 2018 and has gone from strength to strength, with 31 referrals so far this year (to Sept 2020). Families have always had the option to stay at the hospice for end-of-life care. But work is also now being done with pregnant mothers to ensure that when their baby arrives they can enjoy the time they have together, having already considered the difficult decisions they may have to face. Family splash sessions, playgroup and baby massage are just some ways we can help them make precious memories together. The service expanded with a new member of staff in summer 2020 – with lead Katie now having a helping hand in the form of perinatal nurse Kathryn. The new resource has allowed us to offer hospice at home services, with respite visits, wellbeing activities and play all being taken into families’ own homes. Links are now in place with hospitals in Manchester, Bolton, Preston, Burnley, Liverpool, Lancaster and Wigan, meaning the provision is accessible across the North West. Putting Derian on the map Derian House is bringing smiles to children and young adults from further across the North West. The charity is taking more referrals from the Greater Manchester area – with families who previously accessed Grace’s Place Children’s Hospice in Bury offered a helping hand. And a new outreach post planned for South Cumbria will also help families to the north of Derian’s patch 12 access services.
Community rallies after break-in Generous supporters pulled together to raise more than £10,000 after thieves targeted Derian’s Chorley charity shop. Staff and volunteers were left devastated when heartless raiders smashed through the roof to gain entry to the story – causing £1,000 of damage – during lockdown in April. But after an appeal for witnesses on social media went viral and was picked up by the media, a silver lining emerged. £1,000 The charity was inundated with offers of help and donations of damage began flooding in. Dozens of kind-hearted trades people offered caused to lend a hand – with roofer Lee Schofield fixing the damage for free. Local businesses and community groups also rallied. One parent whose daughter comes to Derian House even raised £10,000 £2,200 in just a few days. raised by The £10,000 total not only paid for new security measures across the hospice’s whole network of charity shops in supporters Leyland, Horwich and Adlington, but will also was enough to cover the wages of two hospice nurses every day for a month. Tributes to Derian founder Tributes were made to Ian Haydock, the co-founder of Derian House Children’s Hospice, who passed away in April, aged 69. The Chorley grandad died from pneumonia in Royal Preston Hospital after suffering heart and diabetes complications. Ian came up with the idea to found a children’s hospice after losing his brother Derek to Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) in 1969, aged 19. David Robinson with Ian Haydock He started a fundraising campaign with his family in 1991, raising the initial £25,000, before turning to local businesswoman Margaret Vinten, who helped make his dream become a reality. In 1993 Derian House Children’s Hospice welcomed its first child through the doors. The name Derian is a combination of the names of Derek and Ian. David Robinson, Chief Executive of Derian House, said: I hope Ian's family take some comfort in the fact that his legacy will live on in the name of our hospice and in the good work we do to help children and young people from across the North West. 13
