INTRODUCTION On behalf of all 15 of the Cancer Support France associations, I would like to thank you for taking part in this, the fourth, Cycle for Life. Your participation will help us to reach our goal of raising awareness of CSF and, additionally, raising funds to support our training initiatives. We hope that you will have great fun cycling with us along these fabulous canals which cross France from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean. We have put together as much information as possible to make the ride as easy and pre-prepared as we can. The bike ride itinerary gives a fixed start time and location, suggestions for lunch points or restaurants (or you can buy your own picnic provisions en route or before the start) and possible evening meals / accommodation. Although is it up to each participant to make their own arrangements for eating and accommodation, conviviality is at the heart of this event. We hope that everyone taking part will share lots of laughs over some delicious food and drink, meet our CSF members and take back many happy memories (even if some are of sore bottoms!) of their personal Cycle for Life. Plans for refreshment stops will be updated as we get closer to the start, so please do keep an eye on our dedicated website www.csfcycleforlife.org or the Facebook page www.facebook.com/activityforlife Cycle for Life is definitely not a race! There will many different abilities, ages and levels of fitness so do feel you can undertake the trip at your own pace. There is plenty to see and do along the route and if you want to go at a quicker speed that is fine. We only ask that, if you need support from our volunteers and transport vehicles, you please respect the arranged start and end point times given. Please be aware that there may be a short distance between the end point and your chosen accommodation - this might mean cycling with your rucksack or finding out whether one of our local volunteers can help. Again, if you require support, we do need to know in advance to ensure that we have a volunteer in place for you. In addition, if you would like a support vehicle to transport your personal items, we would ask that you label your rucksack/luggage clearly, this will help to avoid any confusion and ending up with the wrong pyjamas...! Cycle for Life is organised by many volunteers and I would like to thank them all for their effort and time which is freely given. Without you and without them, the event could not take place. This is the only CSF event specifically to support the National association which, like all CSF associations, relies entirely on donations. If you feel able to raise some funds for us too, then we would be most grateful. For French tax payers, donating through our page on Alvarum gives tax advantages, have a look here: http://www.alvarum.com/cancersupportfrance/cycle-for-life-2018 To help us in our goal of increasing visibility of CSF across France, please do also consider ordering a CSF T-shirt. As well as promoting Cancer Support France a T-shirt really helps you identify your fellow cyclists! Finally, whatever YOUR motivation to take part in Cycle for Life, I hope it will be a super experience and one that you will want to repeat as I know that others have done. Wishing you a safe and enjoyable ride! Penelope Parkinson v.02 04/05/2018 3
President Cancer Support France (National) Before the ride Personal fitness for the event This is not an endurance test and there is no pressure on time taken or even whether you finish every stage. However, it is generally advised to practice some general cycling to get ‘bike fit’ and there’s a helpful article on our website by Freewheeling France www.csfcycleforlife.org/top-tips-for-getting-bike-fit Booking accommodation & meals Please make haste in booking your accommodation to avoid disappointment. A sample selection of accommodation suggestions are listed in this pack, but if you are having difficulty finding somewhere suitable please email Sasha at admin@cancersupportfrance.org We have also suggested some meal and refreshment stops and, where indicated, advanced booking is strongly advised. Cycle Hire If you don't think you have the right kind of bike to take part in Cycle for Life 2018, or you are travelling from a distance and need to hire one - help is at hand! Europe Active For those of you wanting to cycle from Royan to Marseillan Plage, then Europe Active are offering a super package. The rate for bike rental is 130€ per bike from 19 May to 31 May including the delivery in Royan and the bike being picked up in Marseillan/Agde. In addition, they are offering a 10% discount to CSF riders. Contact Aurélien on aurelien@europe-active.com for more details and help. And for further information here is their website: velo.europe-active.com Vie et Vélo Vie et Vélo, who are based in Caux near Pezenas in the Herault, can help with finding accommodation and bike hire in their area and beyond….and can provide tips for preparing/training for the event. Please contact Bruce & Denise if you would like more information +33 (0) 603 76 64 14 / info@vie-et-velo.com For those living or holidaying in the area, Vie et Vélo also provide bike hire and guided day rides, organising rides for groups of any level. This can be a great family activity when friends and relatives come to stay! Most of the rides are leisurely and can be customised to suit the group. Bike hire (comfortable bikes for leisure riding) is also possible with delivery in the region around Pezenas. Mellow Velos Mellow Velos have a special offer available to CSF participants, including hire of electric-assist touring bikes. ● Electric comfort 'Kalkofs' - these are step-through so better suited to ladies (CSF price 25€) ● Electric touring 'Focus' - the "best ever" electric bikes - these are trapezium so a little mobility is required (CSF price 30€) ● Comfort bikes - a classic bike ideally suited to the canal paths - (CSF price 18.00€) All bikes come with puncture resistant tyres, paniers, front baskets, pumps, repair kits with locks, helmets and a bottle of water. Delivery and collection from start/finish points can also be arranged. To pre-book please contact Sandra on v.02 04/05/2018 4
04 68 43 38 21 or email paraza@mellowvelos.com Insurance CSF members are covered under the Association policy. If you would like information about joining CSF - please email admin@cancersupporfrance.org Our recommendations for things to bring ● Cycle helmet (mandatory) ● Bottle holders for bike, or a rucksack incorporating a water supply system like a Camelback. ● Bike fit for purpose (i.e. tyres suitable for canal paths and some uneven surfaces, dirt & mud – a multi terrain bike (VTT) is recommended). ● Own puncture repair kit and spare inner tubes, bicycle lock. ● Small first aid supplies and medicines. ● Fully charged mobile phone (and charger) ● CSF T-shirt, please use the link on the website to order www.csfcycleforlife.org/t-shirts ● There is lack of shade along some stretches of the path due to the removal of the trees - sun protection and sunglasses are advised. Fundraising We would love you to raise funds for us. Any donations or sponsorship raised will go towards the national training programme, which is at the heart of maintaining the services provided by CSF to English-speakers in France. The National association has no method of raising its own funds and relies entirely on donations. The Cycle for Life is the only national fundraising event. Cycle for Life is primarily about having fun and raising awareness of the associations and the support they can give. It’s also a great opportunity for CSF members to meet fellow volunteers from other regions. If you, or your friends would like to make a donation or raise sponsorship, it is easy to set-up and contribute via http://www.alvarum.com/cancersupportfrance/cycle-for-life-2018 (this is the equivalent of the Just Giving site) where the Cycle for Life event is already listed. You can download the sponsorship form from the website or ask Sasha on admin@cancersupportfrance.org Transport to/from start points Local accommodation If you have a short distance to travel between the start/finish point of any stage and your accommodation, CSF volunteers will be on hand to assist with transport of bikes and luggage. To return to your cycle start point, the options are: ● Retrace your steps via the same route ● Return on a pre booked SNCF train ● Arrange for a family member/ friend to collect you from your finish point ● Contact CSF to find out if a volunteer can help transport you and your bike v.02 04/05/2018 5
To enable us to prepare ahead, please let us know as early as you can if you would like help from a support vehicle at any of the start or finish points. Return train options from Agde There are trains from Agde to Narbonne and Agde to Montpellier on the 31st May roughly every half hour. Please check each time to find out whether bicycle space is free or needs to be paid for. Here is the SNCF (French rail) website which can also be accessed in English: www.oui.sncf According to the SNCF website today (10th May 2018) trains from Agde will NOT be affected by strikes on the 31st May If you have any further queries please contact Sasha on admin@cancersupportfrance.org v.02 04/05/2018 6
The Route (URL links to google maps of the daily route are at the end of this section - pdfs of the daily route can be downloaded from the URLs - or please contact Sasha who will send you these by email) General information & recommendations In planning the route we have assumed a very gentle pace, and the estimated arrival times allow for (approximately!) a 2-hour lunch break and an hour of refreshment stops. We do ask everyone to register in the morning and also check in on arrival at the day’s destination. If for any reason you are not able to do this, please ensure that you telephone one of our members so that we know you are safe. We do not ask people to cycle together as we want you to go at your own pace, you will be given a daily note of the telephone numbers of our lead riders and support drivers in case you need assistance. The majority of the Canal paths are good, although there are some sections that are quite bumpy due to the tree roots. There are a few sections where the path is narrow (single-file only) and could be quite overgrown. Due to this, a road bike is not recommended except for the last day which is on good cycle paths and minor roads. There are limited public toilet facilities on the Canal paths and, where possible, we have indicated the whereabouts of these, together with cafés, in this Pack. Please keep in mind on any roads that it is safer to cycle single-file and if turning or changing direction to give clear hand indications well in advance. Full information on the French Highway Code is given in English here by Freewheeling France : http://www.freewheelingfrance.com/planning-a-trip/rules-for-cycling-in-france.html The lock-keepers houses along the Canal du Midi are at regular intervals and often sell cold drinks and snacks. At various locations along the route CSF volunteers will also have water and refreshments available at times to correspond with our planned route. Please stay as hydrated as possible in hot weather. Please drink plenty of water before you set off, (minimum half a litre) and keep drinking water regularly along the way and always before you feel thirsty. Tea, coffee and alcohol can all aggravate dehydration. Fruit snacks like apples and oranges can help. If possible, some electrolyte drink (like Gatorade) will help replace salts and minerals. CSF will be providing each cyclist with 2 bottles of Sémillante “still” water every morning We urge you not to rush the route, but take plenty of breaks and enough time has been allowed in the route planning to do this. We have estimated that there will be at least one break after every 45/60 minutes cycling. If you feel that you need to stop cycling and cannot continue, volunteers with support vehicles are in the area and can be contacted via your lead-riders. URL links are on the following pages, cut and paste the appropriate link into your browser. To print a pdf of the route, click on ‘DETAILS’ under the blue box and below the cyclist symbol on the left side. (Screenshot 1 below) A text version of the route details will now be visible. This can be printed with or without the map by first clicking on the print symbol which has appeared under the blue box and to the right of the estimated route time. (Screenshot 2 below) Then click ‘imprimer’ or ‘print’ which will appear in the top right of the next screen. v.02 04/05/2018 7

The route running beside the Gironde Estuary is not completely laid out at time of writing, so you have to deal with a few stretches of small, rough, steep tracks for the moment. Monday 21st May Rest Day at leisure in Bordeaux Notes and Points of Interest The city of Bordeaux is among France's most exciting, vibrant and dynamic cities. In the last decade and a half, it's shed its languid, Belle au Bois Dormant (Sleeping Beauty) image thanks to the vision of city mayor Alain Juppé who has pedestrianised boulevards, restored neoclassical architecture, created a high-tech public transport system and reclaimed Bordeaux's former industrial wet docks at Bassin à Flots. Half the city (18 sq km) is Unesco-listed, making it the largest urban World Heritage site; while world-class architects have designed a bevy of striking new buildings – the Herzog & de Meuron stadium (2015), decanter-shaped La Cité du Vin (2016) and Jean-Jacques Bosc bridge (2018) across the Garonne River included. There will be plenty of things to do and see here on your rest day or simply stroll along the river and have a leisurely meal in one of the many restaurants. v.02 04/05/2018 12
Stage 4. Tuesday 22nd May (Bordeaux to La Reole) Approximate distance 69km Notes & Points of Interest stages 4 & 5 - 147km Bordeaux is a splendid city listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and makes for one glorious starting point on the Canal des 2 Mers à Vélo cycle route. Once you’ve crossed the mighty Garonne River, you enter the Entre-Deux-Mers vineyards via a great cycle track. At Sauveterre-de-Guyenne, join a quiet road to reach the Canal de Garonne near the town of La Réole. Then a greenway runs alongside the canal, shaded by planes, up to Agen.
