CTF CONNECTION *CROSS COUNTRY CANADIAN NEWS* Manitoba News Submitted by Dan Tereck Winnipeg Tenpin Bowling Association – Promotion Continues In order to encourage our local bowlers to report on the accomplishments of bowlers in their leagues, the Winnipeg association had initiated a promotion, with the chance of winning a $100 Pro Shop gift certificate. The rules were fairly simple: For every story/event that is submitted for publication (whether it be on our website, in our quarterly local newsletter, or nationally, in the CTF Connection), the person who submitted it gets an entry into the draw for the gift certificate. We held the draw at our Annual General Meeting that was held on August 16th. And the winner is… Helen Fenk Congratulations Helen! ************ Manitoba Athletes Perform Well at the USBC Senior Championships l-r: Bex Talania, Paul Santos, Terri Dueck, Lauraine Chatelain, Elaine Yamron, Ven Altasin, Clem Perreault, Hermie Amante, Don Decker, Trudy Quint, Debbie Zelondek
CTF CONNECTION *CROSS COUNTRY CANADIAN NEWS* A huge CONGRATULATIONS to all of the Manitoba bowlers who represented our province at the USBC Senior Championships held in Reno, Nevada on Aug 1-3. A number of other Canadian provinces sent bowlers to this event as well. And of course, the bulk of the competitors were representing their states. We did AWESOME! We believe this is the best performance of a Manitoba contingent to this tournament ever. Of the 11 bowlers who made the trip, 8 of them qualified for the Medal Round (this is an additional 3 games that the top 6 qualifiers in each age category compete in for the medals)! After the dust had settled in that final series, their results were: • Terri Dueck – 5th (she also had a 279 game in her qualifying rounds) • Trudy Quint – 2nd • Debbie Zolondek – 5th • Lauraine Chatelain – 3rd • Elaine Yamron – 3rd • Hermie Amante – 4th • Don Decker – 6th • Ven Altasin – 6th Yes, all 5 of the women qualified for the Medal Round, and 3 of the men. The other members of the team didn’t make it to the Medal Round, but finished respectably. • Bex Talania – 11th • Clem Perreault – 22nd • Paul Santos – 28th Here are the 8 Medal Round finishers with their awards. l-r: Hermie Amante, Ven Altasin, Don Decker, Terri Dueck, Debbie Zolondek, Trudy Quint, Elaine Yamron, Lauraine Chatelain ************
CTF CONNECTION *CROSS COUNTRY CANADIAN NEWS* Hamilton News Submitted by Jim Margueratt CUSTEAU RETIRES FROM PRO SHOP DUTIES When the 2018-2019 tenpin bowling season begins, there will be empty feeling at Skyway Lanes as Dave Custeau has closed his Showtime Pro Shop after over 24 years. With a demanding job for the past two years in Milton Ontario, Custeau, 48, found it difficult to combine his job as an Industrial Engineer at Karmax Heavy Stamping with his Pro Shop duties. He previously worked as a Quality Manager in Ancaster for 16 years, and a Program Manager for a Windsor firm for 8 years after graduating from Sir Winston High School and completed a Business & Administration course at Mohawk College in Hamilton. Dave started as a Skyway pin chaser in 1986 and moved behind the front counter in 1988. On December 3, 1993 he became the seventh owner of the Pro Shop and re-named it Showtime after a L.A. Lakers motto, "When it's time, make it Showtime". Dave has been an important part of Skyway Lanes for 32 years of its 61- year history and calls it his "home away from home". His last official day was April 30,2018. Dave belongs to a bowling family as father Dave, mother Vicki and sisters Patty, Christine & Erin all bowled. Vicki worked for Dave for 10 years taking care of the Senior Leagues. The previous six owners of the Pro Shop were Ed Nalborczyk, Danny Downs & Al Tone, Al Schatz, Ed Maurer, Bill Rowe Sr. & Bill Rowe Jr. and Don Watson. At one time, the Pro Shop was located where the present control counter is, but for the past many years was in the basement. One of the many highlights of Dave's tournament action was winning a gold medal at the C.T.F. Juniors Nationals in Thunder Bay in 1988 at age 17. For his 18 games he averaged 198 and claimed Gold medals in Singles by 227 pins, in Mixed Doubles with Aimee Carter, 16, and a Bronze medal in Teams. That earned them a trip to Puerto Rico for the American Zone Junior Championships. For the Junior season back at Skyway, Dave averaged 210, dealt a 289 single and Canadian record 778 triple. Over the 24 years, Dave estimates he drilled between 100 to 150 balls a year with many repeat customers. He also offered shoes, towels, shirts, etc. to his many loyal customers. What will Dave miss the most? “The bowlers, the Skyway employees and the reward of making bowlers better and help to keep them loving the sport". Dave will not be found in the Skyway basement but he will continue to shine upstairs in the Skyway Jonarc League on the same team as his brother-in-law Ryan Dickenson. He has a pair of perfect 300 games, a 792 high triple and a high average of 216. Thank you Dave for the past 24 years and now is the time for that elusive 800 triple. Final 300 game total for last season is 21 with Mick Anderer, Ryan Dickenson, Len Garinger Jr., Rob May and Art Oliver Jr. rolling two each. With one perfect game were Aaron Bouchard, Travis Cauley, Joshua Colwell, Matt Havens, Bill Hicks, Matt Lewis, Nick Murphy, Doug Schatz, Mike Smith, Ron Smith and
CTF CONNECTION *CROSS COUNTRY CANADIAN NEWS* Brian Ward. Matt Lewis set a new Hamilton high average with 237 beating his father Lionel and his 235. Tops for the women was Christine Johnston 205 average & 279 single and Aleta Manning a 720 triple. For the first time in six years there are two new members of our Hall of Fame, both for meritorious service. They are Barb Hollands, our current association manager, and Ron Metcalfe, long-time junior booster. This summer saw the loss of two prominent Hamilton bowlers in John Howard and Garry Bailey who had our 16th. perfect game in 1963 which was the first in our annual association tournament. And some late-breaking news… At The PABCON Senior Tournament held in Calgary, Doug Schatz of Hamilton averaged 207 for 18 games with high singles of 279, 268 & 267. HAMILTON TENPIN TRIVIA 1. Construction has started on condos on the former location of Bowlerama Stoney Creek. Roseland Bowl in Burlington is still standing awaiting their condos. Sherwood Lanes, a 24-lane fivepin house has closed, awaiting their fate. 2. Terry Wira Sr. fired a 300 game at the Hoinke Tournament in Cincinnati in 1976 marking the first time in 36 years that a Canadian had rolled a 300. He said the reason for the 300 was it was the first tournament in 12 years that his wife was present. 3. Stan Quin, who passed away in the last year, rolled a 117 in 1967 and complained about lousy lane conditions. The next game he rolled our first ever 298 game. 4. On February 15, 1918, Fred Cooper was fined $20 for having employed young boys to set pins. 5. Total sanctioned Hamilton 300 games is 466. Total unsanctioned Hamilton 300 games is at least 40. ************
CTF CONNECTION *CROSS COUNTRY CANADIAN NEWS* Windsor-Essex Chatham-Kent Bowling Association Submitted by Cathy Wilbur. We usually talk about leagues of ordinary bowlers, but everyone needs a place where they feel included. I would like to highlight the Michael & Dorothy Graham Bowling League which first began in the early 60’s. The league was first supported by the Alhambra organization. Alhambra is a fraternal organization which is dedicated to assisting persons who are intellectually disabled or handicapped. When Alhambra withdrew their support the ICHA (Italian Canadian Handicapable Association) took over support of the league. The bowlers in this league are all adult bowlers who are intellectually disabled or who have some other handicap challenges. The league bowls on Saturday from 1-3 p.m. from September through May. This league started at Crescent Lanes, and then moved from Rose Bowl to Superbowl where it still operates today. Mike Graham takes care of the league and proudly indicated that he wanted to continue something his parents started so many years ago. This is not a sanctioned league, but this league suits a much-needed purpose within our organization. Some bowlers need assistance, on some lanes they use bumpers on approximately 8 lanes, and some use a rack to roll the ball down the lanes. The league uses approximately 22 lanes with 3 bowlers per lane. The league started with 50 bowlers but now lists 75 participants. Usually on a weekly basis they have 65-68 bowlers that show up to bowl. I asked Mike how does he decide who to allow to bowl if you do not have enough room? He indicated that unfortunately he has to let the regulars bowl and if there is room, those who show up infrequently bowl. Some of the bowlers come with a parent, worker or a relative to help them out and some come by themselves. They also have many volunteers who provide assistance. As previously mentioned each bowler bowls 3 games with 3 bowlers to each lane. Bowlers pay their own bowling. Bowlers are assigned to a certain lane for the whole year, and if they don’t get along then some shifting of bowlers can occur. Gary Crume, executive member from the ICHA, supplies the bowling shirts for the bowlers. A local printer provides special score cards for each bowler to record his/her own scores. Volunteers help record the weekly scores on these score cards if required. When the league first started they used to give the bowlers medals to hang around their neck but in time the medals were no longer seen as very important. At the end of the season, if there is enough money, then a pizza party is arranged for the league. Mike Graham and the rest of the ICHA (Italian Canadian Handicapable Association) do an exceptional job running this league for these bowlers. *****************
CTF CONNECTION *CROSS COUNTRY CANADIAN NEWS* Canadian Deaf Sports Association (CDSA) Looking for Bowlers Thank you to Paul Halas, of Winnipeg, Manitoba for bringing this to our attention. The CDSA is recruiting tenpin bowlers to represent Canada at the World Deaf Bowling Championships being held in Taiwan in August, 2019. As Paul said to me, “I am sure that lots of bowlers with hearing loss have never heard of bowling competition for the deaf.”. Please review the poster below for all the relevant information.
CTF CONNECTION *YOUTH NEWS* World Bowling Youth Championships The 2018 World Bowling Youth Championships were held from July 24 to August 3 in Detroit, Michigan. Canada sent some of our best youth bowlers to compete at this premier event. The Women’s Doubles team of Dakota Faichnie and Mykaela Mitchell won a Bronze Medal. All of the athletes performed admirably and represented our country well. This world competition gave them all more experience, and furthered their understanding of what it takes to not only reach this level, but to excel at this level. We will be hearing more about the successes of these outstanding athletes in the future. Congratulations to all! CTF CONNECTION *TEAM CANADA NEWS* 56th Tournament of the Americas Photo credit: Belle Bautista The 2018 edition of the Tournament of the Americas was held in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, August 5-11. We had 28 athletes competing for Canada, including teams for Juniors B (12-15), Junior A (16-19), Adult, Senior, and Super Senior. There were a lot of medals won! Too many to list here separately. But you can find the complete list at the Tournament of Americas website: https://www.bowlingamericas.com/scores_current/toa_awards_2017.htm Don’t let the “2017” in the above link fool you – they’ve mislabeled it – it is actually the 2018 results. One of the highlights of this event is the selection of the Friendship and Sportsmanship awards for each age category. And the voting is done by the bowlers themselves. So it is much more meaningful! There were several Canadians who were selected: Friendship Award for Juniors (12-15) – Michael Williams Friendship Award for Adults – Summar Farhat Sportsmanship Award for Juniors (12-15) – Dawson Daley Sportsmanship Award for Juniors (16-19) – Karley Foster Sportsmanship Award for Seniors – Cathy Harvey

Mitch Hupé of Towanda, Kansas [Editor’s Note: originally from Winnipeg, Manitoba], only had hours to wait to see if he was going to be the Open Singles champion at the 2018 Bowlers Journal Championships presented by the United States Bowling Congress. He bowled early on the final day of competition and rolled games of 257, 257 and 279 for a 793 series. The longtime member of Team Canada and a 2015 Intercollegiate Team Championships titlist with Wichita State topped the longstanding mark of 791, set by Jason Bowles of Strongsville, Ohio, on March 24, the second day of the 107-day event.
CTF CONNECTION *TEAM CANADA NEWS* Hupé will receive $8,000 for the victory, and he headlines a talented group of champions this year at AMF Strike 'N Spare Lanes, just a short distance from the Oncenter Convention Center, which hosted the USBC Open Championships from March 24-July 8. The 23-year-old right-hander, who also is a Regular Team champion at the Open Championships (2016), claimed an additional $1,000 for topping the Dual Entry standings, too. The special no-cost feature at the Bowlers Journal Championships includes all competitors who choose to use their three-game totals for singles and doubles at the same time. "I wanted to put up a good score but wasn't necessarily chasing the lead," said Hupé, whose set helped him to a third-place finish in Open Doubles with Kevin Bienko (653) with a 1,446 total. "I started the last game with a spare, so I had a long way to go. Luckily, I got the first strike in the 10th. Our main focus coming out here is performing well at the Open Championships, and we could have done better there, but I'm very happy to win the Bowlers Journal." *****************
