Welcome to the
Neighborhood
Jefferson County is located in the state of New York and is named after the third President of the United States of America,
Thomas Jefferson. The county is adjacent to Lake Ontario, southeast from the Canada–US border of Ontario. The county seat
is Watertown and the county comprises the Watertown-Fort Drum, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The U.S. Tenth Mountain
Division is also based at Fort Drum.
Watertown is situated about 20 miles south of the Thousand Islands. Named after the many falls located on the Black River,
the city developed as a manufacturing center in the early 19th century. From years of generating industrial wealth, in the early
20th century the city was said to have more millionaires per capita than any other city in the nation. Watertown claims to be the
birthplace of the five and dime store and the safety pin. It is also home of Little Trees air fresheners. It manufactured the first
portable steam engine. Watertown has the longest continually operating county fair in the United States and is home to the Red
and Black football franchise, the oldest surviving semi-professional team in the United States. The city is also served by
Watertown International Airport.
The Thousand Islands constitute an archipelago of 1,864 islands that straddles the Canada–US border in the Saint Lawrence
River as it emerges from the northeast corner of Lake Ontario. They stretch for about 50 miles downstream from Kingston,
Ontario. The Canadian islands are in the province of Ontario and the U.S. islands in the state of New York. Located along the
peaceful border between northern state of New York and southeastern area of Ontario, Canada, the 1000 Islands has endless
shorelines, rich history and unique culture. The 1000 Islands is perfect for sightseer’s and anyone who enjoys the outdoors. It is
a paradise of it’s own and a popular destination for those looking for an authentic outdoor vacation.
