03 HIGHLIGHT Star Chef | Legal Clinic Star Chef 2019 30 Participants 10 Companies Held on 2 and 3 October 2019 at SHATEC Institutes, Star Chef 2019 challenged chefs in teams of two to demonstrate their culinary skills in either a Western Fusion competition or a Asian competition. The competition followed a mystery-box format, whereby participants only found out the main ingredients for their starter and main course 45 minutes before the start of the competition. This year the competition also promoted sustainability: aprons and chef jackets were made of sustainable materials by Chaud Devant (Worth’s Apparel Design), and the marketplace featured local produce from MEOD, sustainable chocolates from Callebaut (Food Xervices) and plant-based protein such as Omni-pork (Green Monday). All teams were to prepare 1 starter, 1 main course and 1 dessert for judging. 2019’s panel of esteemed judges included: Chef Pung Lu Tin, Chef Eric Neo, Chef Frankie Ong, Chef Ku Keung, Chef Daniel Tay, Chef Michael Lau, Chef Louis Tay, Chef Elvin Chew and RAS council members Mr Dickson Low and Mr Han Jin Juan. Legal Clinic 17 Participants 10 Companies As part of the Growth Development sub-committee, a Legal Clinic was developed to assist newer restauranteurs with their legal concerns such as understanding legal terms, documents and licenses. Alexander Pang, CEO of New Ubin Seafood graciously hosted our members and shared his vast experience. Alexander Pang was previously a lawyer and is presently a non-practicing member of the Singapore Bar.
TRIPS 04 Business Mission to Ho Chi Minh & Hanoi Business Mission to 10 7 Ho Chi Minh & Hanoi Participants Companies RAS and Enterprise Singapore, organised a recce mission to Ho Chi Minh (HCM) and Hanoi from 12 to 16 May 2019, as part of a bigger joint Food Services and Retail Mission to Vietnam. The aims were to achieve a deeper understanding of the Vietnamese F&B market, explore opportunities for Singapore companies in Vietnam and develop relationships with partners (F&B operators, franchisees, mall operators, local distributors and professional services providers) to assist brand expansion into the market. Vietnam is a strong market with good economic growth in South East Asia, with HCM and Hanoi being the 2 main ports of entry into Vietnam for international F&B players. There are strong opportunities for Singapore F&B companies to venture into this market, either via joint venture or franchising routes. Participants visited a total of 9 shopping malls and met with various consultants, mall operators/developers, Vietnamese and Singapore F&B companies.

PROGRAMMES 06 Mentorship Programme Mentorship Programme The RAS mentorship programme is a unique 6-month programme that allows young F&B restaurateurs to learn from our team of esteemed industry veterans. Mentors will guide their mentees through individual sessions and provide invaluable advice and insights. The programme seeks to strengthen the ever-growing F&B community and aims to bring business success to more local companies. 09 HIGHLIGHTS GSS: Experience Singapore 2019 | RAS Futsal Tournament 2019 GSS: Experience Singapore 2019 Singapore’s annual shopping event, Great Singapore Sale was rebranded to “GSS: Experience Singapore” this year. For the first time, 6 trade associations collaborated together for the event. This included: Restaurant Association of Singapore (RAS), Singapore Retailers Association (SRA), One Kampong Gelam (OKG), Orchard Road Business Association (ORBA), Singapore Furniture Industries Council (SFIC) and Textile and Fashion Federation (TaFF). RAS members were invited to participate in The Great Singapore Street Pop-up, a 10-day event that was held along the streets of Orchard Road from 21 to 30 June. 42 retail and F&B operators participated in total. Members were also encouraged to list their deals and discounts on the GSS: Experience Singapore website. On 22 May 2019, members visited Smart City Kitchens' first facility in Singapore, before their official launch, to learn about the innovative ways they can accelerate their growth by expanding into delivery-centric kitchens. Before the tour of the kitchens, members also heard from Mr Warren Tseng, Regional GM of Smart City Kitchens, Mr Justin Chou, co-founder of Greendot Group and Ms Dionis Chiua, Founder of Lean Bento. Annual General Meeting 2019 & PLEASURES@RAS 22 90 54 AUG Participants Companies Held on 22 August 2019 at UOB Penthouse, members gathered together and reviewed the work and achievements of the association for the year 2018. A PLEASURES@RAS sharing session followed after the Annual General Meeting. Ms Wong Yu Ling from Unilever, shared with members on how businesses can expand their market of diners with their new platform, ShiokFoodFind. Mr Low Boon Seong from Align Group shared informative insights on how businesses can future-proof themselves via transforming human capital. Ending the session, Singtel’s Ms Clara Tan shared on how businesses can embrace digitalisation to unlock new growth opportunities.

HIGHLIGHTS 22 Inbound Food Services Business Mission- Vietnam to Singapore In-bound Food Services Mission Vietnam to Singapore 40 20 18 8 Participants Companies Participants Companies RAS, with support from the Restaurant Association Vietnam (RAV) and Enterprise Singapore, welcomed 18 Vietnamese delegates to Singapore from 25 – 27 September 2019. The objectives of the mission were for local F&B companies to explore, validate and secure partnership opportunities with Vietnamese investors, franchisees, joint-venture partners and operators, with interest to collaborate with Singapore companies. The mission also sought to promote knowledge exchange on the business landscape and market opportunities in both Vietnam and Singapore. The Vietnamese delegates visited 9 local F&B companies across three days, providing them with the opportunity to experience, immerse and taste our local F&B concepts. The delegation visited companies such as Select Group, Creative Eateries, PUTIEN, Joe & Dough, Gratify Group, Greendot, CJS Catering, Tung Lok Group and Yolé. The mission concluded with a networking session that was open to all RAS members. Hosted by our member CJS Catering, the session was held at Sea Scent at Keppel Club and comprised presentations by industry experts that provided tips and insights on ways to successfully internationalise one’s F&B business. In addition, Orissa International conducted exclusive one-to-one clinic advisory sessions to assist local restauranteurs on their regional expansion plans. RAS hopes to continue our long-term partnership with RAV and will continue to support our members on their global internationalization efforts.
