THE FORDSON TRACTOR Chic’s name was William Graham Walmsley (W G a fact that not a lot of people were aware of). The Fordson tractor was purchased by Richard (Dick) Holder, grazier, on 5th September 1951. Price was £700 from N J Furze of Merriwa NSW, Ford salesman for Merriwa and district. After attending a movie at the Astros Theatre, Merriwa, they ventured out on what was a very chilly night, 14 miles out the Willow Tree road, when they reached half way up Galla Gilla hill, the tractor stalled as it ran out of fuel. Chick told Ruth to jump off. He thought it might run back if the brakes didn’t hold. But they held and no one was injured. Fortunately Richard Holder was behind them in his car. WELCOME TO THE SUPPORT CLASS - HISTORY Oh what fun we are having. We have been completing our book covers and title pages. Learning about Egypt and dancing like an Egyptian. We have been watching documentaries on all the Egyptian Gods and taking turns to listen to each other respectfully. The other focus has been discussing our own personal histories. Very interesting. We have learnt about monks, cathedrals, monasteries and crusades. Lastly, we have been playing hangman using some of the words that are a little challenging and making distinctions between vowels and consonants. The students are an absolute pleasure to teach. Michelle Charters MC Class Teacher SECONDARY LIBRARY Term 1 has been off to a great start in MCS’ Secondary Library. The Chess Club, running Tuesdays and Thursdays, has seen a lot of revival with a weekly crowd of regulars and newcomers. With Mr Buchan’s expertise and guidance, the kids’ games get sharper every week. The library is also continuing to work closely with the Teaching and Learning, TAS and MC faculties to encourage an active reading and borrowing culture within the school. We have already checked out several books to the MC and Year 7 English classes as part of this. On this note, the Premier’s Reading Challenge has also started for 2021. Any secondary students who are interested in being part of this can come up to the library at recess or lunch, to get a reading log. The library has always been a welcoming, safe and inclusive space for our kids. We look forward to continuing that and empowering our students to continue being Safe, Respectful Learners in 2021. St Joseph’s Primary School FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S OFFICE Thank you to all the parents who met with their teachers for Goal Setting meetings in the previous week. Goal setting is something we all unconsciously do from time to time but is also something that is very important on our child’s educational journey. Our students must learn how they are currently performing, which steps they need to undertake to improve and to set a goal for improvement, to continuously strive to be their best. Our Working Bee was very well attended last Sunday, with over 35 people from 12 families in attendance. The yard, gardens and canteen were “spruced” up and given some much needed TLC. We thank our families for giving their time for the school. Last week, Welderup completed the last of their finishing touches to our new COLA. Thank you to Justin and the team who did a magnificent job! We must place a few finishing touches to ensure the safety of our students, but we cannot wait to get our students playing under it soon! All families should take pride in the fact your school fees financed this project. Thanks to Cricket NSW and Sports Schools Australia, St Joseph’s students were given an opportunity to learn about the basics of cricket, with Kristy. Kristy reported that students did very well, had EXCELLENT behaviour and attitude and that she could not wait to come back to Joeys to do it all again. Page 14 Merriwa Ringer
