The Australian Grains Industry Conference 2021 Welcome from your Conference Hosts Australian Oilseeds Federation (AOF) As co-host of the Australian Grains Industry Conference, the Australian Oilseeds Federation (AOF) once again welcomes you to this year's Conference. Having demonstrated resilience and flexibility in adapting to COVID-19 during 2020, this time last year we would have envisaged a different scenario for 2021. 12 months on, the sector Australian Oilseeds continues to respond to and cope with the challenges of a COVID world. Despite the difficulties Federation of operating in an environment of lockdowns and border closures, shipping challenges and global tensions, the Australia agricultural sector has provided a very bright and optimistic business environment for the grains and oilseed sector. With 2020 proving to be the much- needed 'drought breaker' for much of the country, replenishing bank accounts across the value chain, 2021 is shaping up to be an even bigger, brighter and more profitable year for the sector. The domestic oilseed sector has been one of the 'stars' of this season, with record planting for canola, continued growth in safflower and a return to solid areas planted for soybeans and sunflowers on the back of good summer rain in the north and more affordable water in the MIA. Internationally, the oilseed complex has experienced unprecedented volatility, with soybeans reaching multi-year highs and canola prices at record highs. The impact of drought-induced Canadian canola shortages combined with greater demand for biodiesel in the US and EU, continued soft rapeseed production in the EU and a drop in the AUD has created the perfect environment for Australian canola growers, with prices nudging AUD $1,000/tonne. The buoyancy in the sector has created a strong platform for continued investment in oilseed capability, spanning breeding, agronomy, processing and end use markets. The confidence has also spread to export opportunities, with exports of crude and processed oil reaching a record high over the past 12 months. The opportunity to 'value add' domestically and export oil rather than seed provides for stronger returns for the industry and a greater base for further investment. The AOF continues to lead the oilseeds industry, promoting the development of the industry and supporting its growth through providing services to members, facilitating linkages between participants and encouraging the industry to work together for the betterment of all. An example of this leadership is the establishment of Sustainable Grain Australia, an initiative to simplify and reduce costs for growers and exporters associated with ISCC certification of canola and other grains. Between Sustainable Grain Australia and CBH, 5000 grain farms were certified under ISCC in 2020, delivering over 3 million tonnes across canola, barley, oats and lupins. The AOF continues to support the industry through its participation in industry and government bodies. Over the past 12 months, under the stewardship of the AOF, the Australian oilseed industry developed the next 5 year Strategic Plan to set clear goals and pathways to ensure the industry continues to grow and prosper through a common vision and cooperation between all sectors. I hope you enjoy the learning and virtual networking opportunities provided by this year's Australian Grains Industry Conference. Rosemary Richards President, Australian Oilseeds Federation 8
The Australian Grains Industry Conference 2021 Grain Trade Australia (GTA) On behalf of Grain Trade Australia (GTA), and during GTA's 30th birthday celebrations I would like to welcome you to AGIC 2021. This is our second “virtual” conference following the successful AGIC Live 2020. The grain industry story prior to 2020/21 has been one of years of severe drought in eastern Australia. Thankfully, Australian grain production recovered in 2020/21 season to 58 million tonnes, the second largest crop on record. It has been a monumental effort by Australian grain supply participants, including GTA members to efficiently receive, store and move this large crop to demand points within Australia and across the globe, while ensuring the grain quality and food safety throughout the supply chain. The industry has been truly tested in the past year, and I am pleased to report has passed the test. This highlights the importance and value of GTA's core mission the 'facilitation of trade', the ability for industry participants to appropriately manage risk and the willingness of GTA members to support an effective industry driven self-regulatory framework. 2021 saw GTA hold the first Australian Grain Supply Chain Summit to launch an important strategy called “Modernising the grain supply chain - from drought, through Covid-19 to 2030”, developed by GTA to enhance industry, through strategic efficiency gains in the value chain. The rationale is simple; improving the efficiency of the grain supply chain improves the value of every tonne of grain that moves through it. That value will flow to all participants in the supply chain. In 2021, GTA published the Standards for Empty Container Inspection in collaboration with DAWE and Shipping Australia Ltd to provide guidance on the acceptable quality of containers. We also established a Domestic Sector Council in 2021 that will focus on the largest single “destination” for Australian grain - Australia. The GTA Domestic Sector Council now joins the Australian Grain Exporters Council (AGEC) as Sector Councils of GTA The work of GTA continues to deliver benefits to the grain industry. As the world is getting more complicated, the facilitation of trade grows in importance and becomes more challenging. GTA's products and services, including Australian Grain Industry Code of Practice, provide the foundations upon which our industry and value chains can operate with confidence and integrity in our transactions and product quality. In difficult times engagement with customers, consumers and colleagues is as important as ever. AGIC conferences have an important role in this. In March 2021, AGIC Asia was held as a virtual conference with over 600 delegates from 25 countries attending on-line for the event which highlighted Australian grain and the quality assurance process in the grain supply chain. I must thank our Technical Committees, and Sector Council Members and the GTA Board who all volunteer their time. These contributions result in a GTA that works, is representative of its members and is fundamental to the 'can-do' culture of GTA and our industry. This conference is an enormous undertaking. I would like to thank our Conference organisers, Program Committee, our speakers and GTA staff. These people have worked very hard to put together such a high calibre and engaging program on such a vibrant virtual platform. I must thank our sponsors for their unwavering support. We say it every year, and it remains true, without our sponsors, we would not be able to bring you AGIC events! Please show your support for them as well. Please move around the AGIC platform and engage with our sponsors and network with your fellow delegates in the chat rooms, ask questions of our speakers, and have a great conference. Remember the conference content will be able to delegates for a further 30 days. I am confident AGIC 2021 will deliver an opportunity to Reconnect, Reignite and Revitalize albeit in a virtual format! Yours sincerely Andrew Goyder Chairman, Grain Trade Australia 9
The Australian Grains Industry Conference 2021 Pulse Australia On behalf of Pulse Australia, welcome to AGIC Live 2021. Last year, we congratulated ourselves on being able to 'pivot' in a COVID-19 environment and hold AGIC as a virtual event. The word 'pivot' has almost disappeared from the COVID-19 lexicon, as we have all now adapted to life with COVID. The organisers of AGIC 2021 have once again done a fantastic job in being able to bring this annual event to the industry in a virtual format, under challenging circumstances. This year's conference program, as always, has a wide range of excellent speakers and topics, and I am particularly pleased to be involved in opening Day 2 on consumer driven trends and the opportunities these present for agriculture. The grains industry exists for one reason only - that being to put food on people's plates. The consumer truly is the decision maker and recognition of the changing consumer trends is essential to understand how this is shaping the grains value chain. One only has to look at the current debate around meat and meat analogues, or the increase in focus on sustainability in the grains industry, to appreciate how consumer trends shape what we grow, how we grow it, who will buy it, and for what purpose. The pulse industry is at the forefront of some of these consumer trends and is itself adapting to the changing needs. The demand for plant-based protein is changing the mindset around the role of pulses with the high protein levels in pulses being recognised as core inputs to new and emerging plant-based foods. Australia is seeing significant investment in this area, with one recently completed protein extraction plant already looking to expand, and another multi- million-dollar protein extraction facility recently announced. These investments are testament to the confidence of these companies in the future of the Australian pulse industry, and this confidence permeates the whole industry. This confidence continues to grow, despite restricted access to our main market, India, and the challenges with shipping over the past 18-months. The 2020 harvest and export program were very strong, as growers resumed more typical rotations with a confidence that the drought conditions had subsided. This year's crop is looking equally as promising, albeit with 8 - 12 weeks to go for harvest, and the BOM forecasting a wetter than average Spring. On the broader industry front, the establishment of Grains Australia Limited will change the grains industry representative body landscape markedly over the next 12 - 24 months. Pulse industry participants can be assured Pulse Australia is committed to a sustainable and value- creating industry good company to ensure we remain a globally recognised high quality producer of grains. On behalf of the Board of Pulse Australia, enjoy the excellent program of speakers and thought-provoking topics on offer at this year's Conference. Georgie Aley Chair, Pulse Australia 10
