These transition events start early in the term and finish in our last week of term when students and parents find out who will be in their class and who their teacher will be. Obviously the current COVID-19 events have prevented us from completing all of these events which will mean that, depending on future advice from SA Health, we will need to explore other ways to help support, as best as we can, a positive transition process for students in readiness for 2021. Supporting students as they try to manage their thoughts and emotions in relation to future changes in their lives is important. As a school we take this seriously and endeavour to do as much as we can here at school to provide this support. I recently read an interesting article written by Madhavi Nawana Parker that provided some advice and practical suggestions for parents/carers about how they can support their children with these changes. Madhavi is a well-known behavioural consultant, author and public speaker who works in schools and allied healthcare settings, specialising in building cultures of wellbeing, resilience, social-emotional intelligence and confidence. Madhavi has presented Parent Information Evenings at our St John’s Campus in the past and is also the Director of Positive Minds Australia. In this article Madhavi speaks about how parents can support these times of change, specifically in reference to moving classes and connecting with a new teacher. I refer you to the link below and also to the Positive Minds website which provides access to a range of free resources. NAIDOC Week St John’s Campus acknowledged NAIDOC Week with a range of activities. We were blessed to have Mr Rodney O’Brien (Kaurna Elder) share a Welcome to Country at our Assembly. Both Mr O’Brien and Dr Roger Thomas explained the importance of NAIDOC Week as a celebration of the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Throughout the week, students and staff engaged in a range of devotions and learning activities focussed on the 2020 NAIDOC theme, “Always Was, Always Will Be”. Nancy Wells Arts Teacher Year 4 Bohnenpflanzen Meine Bohnenpflanze (My bean seed) Over the course of Term 4, Year 4 students have been exploring a unit of work run through the Goethe Insitut titled “Meine Bohnenpflanze” (my bean seed). This new and innovative unit of work authentically connects the learning area of German with Science. Students studied the German story “Jack und die Bohnenstange” (Jack and the Bean Stalk) where they were exposed to a variety of new language structures and grammar. Students also explored the life cycle of the bean seed and learnt a variety of language conventions in German related to this process and the ability to explain this process in German. The culmination and arguably the highlight of this unit of work has been the opportunity for each student to grow and nurture their very own bean seed. It has been great to see students’ enthusiasm and excitement throughout this unit of work, especially as they continue to observe their bean seed as it grows. Jane Graham German Teacher Year 1 Museum Excursions On Wednesday, 11 November, the Year 1 students had an excursion to the Migration and SA Museums. We saw so many amazing things and learnt a lot about life in the past. Some of the highlights were: Learning how to play games from the past like ‘Mani Mani’ Seeing the giant squid in the SA museum Looking at Aboriginal artwork Discovering which animals have become extinct over time Jasmin Bartlett, Rachel Harrip and Maddy Russell
Year 1 Teachers Year 3 Camp to Nunyara On Thursday and Friday last week the Year 3s recently enjoyed our camp to Nunyara in Belair. We focused on communication, teamwork and building leadership skills. Our students enjoyed activities such as a water obstacle course, shelter building, brain teasers, billy cart course design and racing, and challenged ourselves with climbing a huge pine tree. Some highlights of our camp from our students: “One thing that I really enjoyed was the water activities which included throwing sponges to each other, building a puzzle, building a successful water system to get water from one bucket to another bucket and crawling under a net carrying a sponge. I also enjoyed riding billy carts we had to build the track and we tried to get a really fast time.” “First up the awesome water obstacle course and it really helped on my team work. But a heads up if you ever do it, you get drenched! My second was the tribal games kung fu king and especially the game called 1,2,3 and the harder level 1,2,3,4. I wasn't the best at it but it was so much fun. Another highlight of camp was the tree climb it looked so high but once you get up to the top the view is amazing. And last but not least having FUN with my friends and people that I haven't really played with before. All I could say is that Camp Nunyara is fantastic! And the food is delicious and dorms are great.” “I enjoined the big tree climb and when it was my turn I made it to the top! Noah went really fast when I was in the billy cart. The food was so good because the garlic bread and the penne Bolognese was so good then to top it off with a frog in a pond. The brain twister was so good because the activities were really fun and good especially the noodle one. The water obstacle was fun because Mrs Wilk got drenched while playing with us!” Caitlin Wilk and Mike Kriewaldt Year 3 Teachers Back to top

Middle School students meet Bruce Djite 26 Book Challenge Year 7 and 8 Transition Australian Geography Competition STEM Hydro Rockets From the Concordia Campus School Pastor The spiritual theme for the Concordia Campus this term has been Light In The Darkness. This has given us the opportunity to reflect on the unique hope we have in this life to face all sorts of difficult situations together as a community. Our hope is inspired by the incredible acts of God throughout time, who regularly defied the odds to bring life, goodness, blessing and reconciliation out of situations that looked bleak. The most important and defining of these events was Christ’s resurrection, which began a new dawn and a new era in our world, where the human longing for death to be overcome became a reality. It was, therefore, a touching moment when we celebrated All Saints’ Day a few weeks ago at Concordia Campus, and took the time to thank God for the people who had been such a blessing to our lives but who had sadly passed away in the past twelve months. These people – and even pets – have greatly enriched our lives and been a source of joy for our families. The relationships we had with them were acknowledged as gifts from God, for they contributed significantly to us having a sense of connection, purpose and identity that are essential to our lives as human beings. As the names of these people were read out, we lit a candle to remember them and to signify the light of hope we have in facing death. We also recalled the words from Scripture that point to a new heaven and a new earth where the pain, suffering and darkness of this life will be left behind. In this passage, our Lord promises to “…wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” (Revelation 21:4) This promise of the future gives us hope in the present. We will soon celebrate God’s light coming into the world at Christmas, which is another event in which God pulled off the miraculous in circumstances that seemed unlikely, and even impossible. That we celebrate this festival with lights that shine
in the darkness is truly appropriate. May we, as a community, be people who reflect this light in the way we live our lives with hope, no matter what the circumstances of our times may be. We may never have another year like 2020 (let’s hope not!) but there will certainly be events in the future that make the darkness more apparent. We pray that Christ’s light, in good times and in bad, will continue to shine in our lives. Dale Gosden School Pastor Microsoft Surface Lighthouse School 2021 Several years ago Concordia College made the decision to incorporate Microsoft Surface devices across our campus, to help teachers deliver better learning in the classroom, provide a wider range of learning environments, and to ensure our students have the digital literacy and technological skills they need to thrive in the future workforce. Our approach has been so successful that Concordia has recently been recognised as a top tier Microsoft Surface Lighthouse School. This is the highest level of recognition possible from Microsoft for Australian schools, and means we are now part of an exclusive cohort of schools delivering outstanding learning using Surface devices. We have been leading the way in digital learning for some time now and are thrilled to be listed as a Surface Lighthouse School. This recognition also comes with new levels of collaboration, support and resources from Microsoft, which will be of great benefit to our students, staff and the wider school community. You can read more about the Surface Lighthouse School program and what it means for Concordiahere. Adrian Wuttke ICT Manager Annual Arts Show 2020 On Friday, 13 November, the creativity of our Concordia Campus students was well and truly on display at our annual Arts Show. The Pavilion in the Quad housed the amazing products crafted by our Year 12 Design, Technology and Engineering students, while in the Nautilus Centre and Art Centre foyer a wide variety of work by Visual Arts, Design, Media and Photography students was on display for guests to enjoy. Jimmy Dodd, our Artist-in-Residence who worked with students to create some amazing kinetic art for several weeks in Term 1, opened the show, and it was wonderful to have him join us for the evening. Mat Noble Director of Music Year 9 German Students Visit Hahndorf During Term 4, the Year 9 German students are learning about early German settlement in South Australia. They will shortly be undertaking a task in which they take on the persona of one of the children who travelled from Germany to Australia on board the Zebra in 1838, writing a diary entry about the experiences of their chosen child migrant. The Zebra was captained by Captain Dirk Meinertz Hahn, and the passengers on his ship, who ultimately settled Hahndorf, named their new village in his honour. To prepare for this task, the Year 9 German students took part in a full-day excursion to Hahndorf during Week 4. Fortified by a morning tea of German cakes, the students explored the Institute museum, Rodert’s Farm, the Pioneer Memorial Gardens and the main street, as well as visiting St Paul’s and St Michael’s Lutheran churches. These activities provided the students with valuable insight into the experiences of the early German settlers, as well as the opportunity to view original buildings, machinery and artefacts first-hand. The lunch break also gave students the opportunity to sample the local German cuisine. It was a very enjoyable and informative day that will enable the students to write about the experiences of the early settlers with greater insight.
The German Faculty Lutheran Community Care – Christmas Hamper Appeal As you may be aware, Lutheran Community Care (LCC) is our focus service project this term. Already over the past weeks we have been collecting general pantry items to assist Lutheran Community Care’s work with needy families. Thank you everyone for the donations your families have made already. We are making a slight change to this for the next few weeks. Lutheran Community Care have asked if we can help to create ‘Christmas Hampers’. Christmas is a difficult time for many families in SA who may be doing it tough for many reasons. Lutheran Community Care collects these Christmassy items which they put together to bless families in need. See below for lists of items that LCC include in the Christmas hampers. We would especially ask that you consider donating some gifts for children (under 12 years of age). For example: books, puzzles, toys, sporting goods and craft items. We would also appreciate donations of Christmas wrapping paper so that the hamper boxes can be wrapped as gifts! Please bring items to either Home Class or place into the containers marked ‘LCC’ outside the SSO. This will be open until Friday, 4 December, to allow hampers to be completed and then delivered to families in the days leading up to Christmas. At Concordia, we would love to help make Christmas a happier time for many families who otherwise may miss out. Let's be generous givers and make a difference together. Thank you everyone for your support of Lutheran Community Care and the important work they do. Here are some items for our 2020 Christmas Hamper wish list: Canned ham or turkey Tinned beans Biscuits - sweet or savoury Continental pasta pack Sugar Coffee/milo Tea bags Instant mash Chips or popcorn Pasta sauce Canned tuna Long life milk Long life juice Long life custard Pasta or rice Cereal Tinned veggies Tinned fruit Christmas wrapping paper Children's gifts - newborn to 12 years old - (books, puzzles, toys, sporting goods, craft items, etc) Mark Rathjen Christian Studies Teacher and Spiritual Development Facilitator
Stage 2 Design, Technology & Engineering 2020 The Year 12 Design, Technology & Engineering class of 2020 were a highly motivated group of resilient students who let nothing get in their way of success. Through pure hard work and determination, the products that were manufactured were arguably the most diverse and best overall quality ever produced. The sense of pride and satisfaction on the students’ faces as the final photographs were taken is what makes this subject so special. Congratulations to every student on their exceptional effort throughout the year. Shane Beitz Head of Design, Technology and Engineering Year 9-11 Geography Field Trips Term 4 has provided the Geography students with an opportunity to explore the outdoors as part of their curriculum focus. Field trips are a fantastic way to learn outside of the classroom and to develop the skills required to further their geographical knowledge and study of the world around them. Year 9 students headed to Warrawong Sanctuary to combine their Science knowledge of Ecosystems and Geography knowledge of Biomes, and to look at how they are connected to help manage the land for increased biodiversity. Year 10 students had the perfect day to spend at Port Noarlunga South, Southport Dunes and Port Noarlunga Jetty. They collated information about coastal processes, land use and management practices, developing their field work techniques along the way. Year 11 students headed to three suburbs in Adelaide to look at the changing land uses and sustainability practices to ensure that Adelaide remains one of the most liveable cities in the world! They were able to speak with the Lead Project Manager of Renewal SA, Andrew Bishop, and explore some of the urban renewal processes evident. We look forward to building on these field work skills in Geography and giving our students a chance to learn beyond the classroom walls. Emily Johnson MYP Coordinator Music Notes 2020 Mike Stewart Memorial Award Mike Stewart joined the Concordia Music team in 2007 as a saxophone tutor and Big Band Director. He quickly established himself as a hugely talented and inspiring mentor to students and staff alike. His vast knowledge of Jazz, and his ability to play it with flair, motivated all who were blessed to have known him.
With the passing of Mike in May of 2014, the music community suffered a great loss, but his legacy is one of passion, imagination, vitality and encouragement, and it is these qualities that we will continue to celebrate. The Mike Stewart Memorial Award is our way of doing this. This award has been set up as a result of generous donations from the community, and is awarded to a Concordia College Big Band 1 member, who displays the qualities outlined above, over an extended period – that of passion for music, imagination, vitality and encouragement of others. We congratulate Ethan (12RSOM) who was presented with this important award during our Week 4 Assembly. He will receive $500 to assist with furthering his musical endeavours, and his name is engraved on the memorial panel located next to the Music display cabinet in the Murtoa hallway. AHOMINGS Significant Contribution to Music Education Award – Congratulations Martin Cheney A highly literate and capable musician, Martin Cheney has for many years demonstrated outstanding musical skill and leadership in music education, particularly through performance, arranging and composition. He has provided Concordia students with a superlative example of musical outcomes, thereby inherently enriching their Music education experience regardless of their year level or artistic ability. Whether in the classroom or as director of an ensemble, his expert delivery of material, as well as his production of outstanding resources, will remain an example for others to follow for years to come. Mat Noble Director of Music Year 12 German - Klasse kocht und backt! The Year 12 German class went out with a bang, showcasing not just their linguistic, but also their cooking skills. Kim Bennett Head of Languages Middle School students meet Bruce Djite In Week 4, during our Middle School Assembly, students had the privilege to hear from and meet former Adelaide United soccer player, and now Director of Football, Bruce Djite. Bruce, who is a highly regarded soccer player, shared his experiences of racism and prejudice as both a child and as an elite athlete. Bruce had a very simple message to share – treat each person with dignity and respect, and remember to look at everything from different perspectives. As a community we value diversity and warmly welcome people of all different backgrounds. Bruce’s parting message
particularly struck a chord – the character of a person is the most important thing; it doesn’t matter how good someone might be at something (eg. Football), if they are not a kind or caring person, then the rest doesn’t matter. Bruce’s mission is to erase racism – we were very fortunate to hear his message, and to be challenged to make a difference and take a stand. Joanne Wegener Assistant Head of Middle School 26 Book Challenge On Friday, 13 November, we celebrated the completion of our 2020 26 Book Challenge. Students who accepted the mission were challenged to read 26 books across a range of diverse categories. A sample of the categories: A book written by an author with your same initials. A book set somewhere you have always wanted to visit. A book published the year you were born. A book that has won the Pulitzer Prize. A book written by someone under the age of 25. All students were presented with their certificates, and three students who completed the challenge were drawn at random to receive a book voucher. At our celebration we talked about the new authors and books we discovered as a result of the specific challenge categories. It was fabulous to see over 30 students from Years 7-11 take part this year. A total of 20 students achieved the impressive milestone of 26 books. We also announced the members of our Book Council for 2021. Eight students from Years 7–11 will be involved in creating the categories for next year’s Challenge, as well as promoting literacy initiatives across the Concordia College campus. Congratulations to: Aryan, (7MRID) Matilda (7 MRID), Ciara (7RHOG), Victoria (8SCOO), Lily (8GGRA), Alicia (9ELCU), Tahlia (9ELCU) and Jack (11SBUD). We look forward to seeing your positive contributions to Book Council in 2021. Emma Rieger Gifted Education Year 7 and 8 Transition Over the last three weeks, the Middle School has been hosting “welcome” visits for the new Year 7 and 8 students joining our community in 2021. These visits play a very important part in helping students to adjust to their new school environment. Students joining Year 7 and 8 in 2021 had the opportunity to meet other new people and begin forging friendships. The Year 7 students also had the
opportunity to have a “try” of some of the subjects they will undertake next year – Science, Digital Technologies and PE all provided opportunities for some new experiences. Our Year 9 Ambassadors did an amazing job hosting these visits and helping the students get to know Concordia and each other. The Ambassadors led the students on tours of the school and engaged in a variety of activities to help “break the ice” and form new friendships. We look forward to getting to know these students even more when they join the College community in 2021. Joanne Wegener Assistant Head of Middle School Australian Geography Competition Back in Term 1, before the world changed, Concordia College Geography students entered the Australian Geography Competition to test their geographical skills and knowledge against students from around Australia. Across all six year levels, 300 students completed the competition, with 20% of participants achieving a credit or higher. Ten students achieved High Distinctions, and one of our students achieved the highest score for their year level in the state. Finally, Concordia College achieved its own personal best, being the highest scoring school in the whole of South Australia – well done to our geographers! Congratulations to these students for their outstanding achievements. In a year like no other, we have been reminded of just how significant geography is to our understanding of the world and its interconnections. So, it is very pleasing to see such success in our students and potential future geographers. Joanne Wegener AGC Coordinator / Geography Teacher STEM Hydro Rockets During Semester 2, our Year 10 STEM classes undertook a unit on Hydro Rockets. Students were challenged to investigate relevant scientific principles and concepts, which informed design, prototyping and construction of a rocket propelled by water and pressurised air. The most impressive feat of engineering is the design of the release mechanism, in which a parachute is to be activated at the peak of flight, enabling a safe return to earth. Final construction of rockets incorporates precision manufacturing processes such as CAD, 3D printing and laser cutting technologies. Final launch day is favoured as new heights and records are strived for, with very successful outcomes. Congratulations to the following students who achieved the best flight times in their class: Harvey 10NFLE - 18.56 seconds with a successful deployment of both parachute and astronaut Oscar 10BZAN - 19.7 seconds with a successful deployment of both parachute and astronaut Rhys Dezsery Design, Technology & Engineering and STEM Back to top

Knockout Basketball Year 8 and 9 Knockout Basketball On Thursday, 15 October, the Concordia Year 8 and 9 girls Knockout team played our first game for the year. It was a tight game against Cabra College. Overall the girls played extremely well as a team and although it was a tough game we came out with the win. This put us through to the next round at Cornerstone College. After winning an easy game against Cornerstone, Concordia was in the finals day! This was the first time in Concordia history that the girls middle school KO
team were in the finals. We played three games in total, winning against Heathfield in the first game. It was a competitive and close game which we kept pushing through to get the win. We then played Tenison Woods and lost by a few points. It was a tough game with the scoreboard changing every minute. For the semi-finals, the top team of each pool played the second team in the opposite pool. This meant we had to play against Henley, and lost by a considerable margin. It was an extremely difficult game, but despite that, we tried our best in every situation. We finished in the top four best teams in the state which was an amazing achievement. As a team, we would like to thank Emma Whyte, Erin Blake and Mr Nicola for being outstanding coaches. We can’t thank you enough for all the time and effort you put into coaching.
