With the Christmas season fast approaching, there is nothing more personal than giving and receiving a bespoke piece made by one of The New Craftsmen’s cohort of expert makers from around the British isles. ARJAN VAN DAL Following a successful career working for the Dutch Commission to UNESCO, Arjan Van Dal began his “second career” in ceramics in 2015 having studied in his spare time under the watchful eye of Raymundus van Kessel. He was taken on as an assistant to Hitomi Hosono before being selected for the Crafts Council Hothouse Programme in 2016. Arjan has since exhibited his work across the globe, notably at the International China Craft Week in Hangzhou, and he was also commissioned to create an entire dinner range for Gazelle Mayfair. 8

JOHN WHEELDON Creating tableware that contemporises traditional 18th century creamware designs, Derbyshire-based ceramicist John Wheeldon draws inspiration from early pioneers in the field, such as Josiah Wedgewood, Thomas Whieldon and William Greatbach. To decorate his work, John has manufactured his own specialist tools, such as roulettes and handle dies, based on examples found in museums originating from the 1700s. 14

MATTHEW FOSTER Ceramics artist Matthew Foster studied Fine Art at Kent University and after winning the Seasalt Bursary in 2016, he became an apprentice at Leach Pottery in Cornwall. Alongside growing his individual practice, Matthew continues to work as the Studio Production Manager at Leach Pottery and draws much inspiration from his contemporaries there. In line with an on-going exploration of the Mingei Philosophy (focusing on the beauty of ordinary, everyday craft), he is currently exploring peasant stonewares of the Korean Yi dynasty, Gongxian pottery, Tang dynasty, and porcelain pots from the Chinese Sung period. 18 19

MICHAEL RUH Michael Ruh is a celebrated glass artist, creating blown glass pieces with a modern aesthetic. Since establishing his Studio in 2004, Michael has worked with simple, traditional tools that have been used throughout the centuries to craft exquisite tableware, lighting and home accessories. Michael’s forms are each marked with his signature technique of scribing lines across the surface of each vessel. The technique is reminiscent of Japanese Bokuseki calligraphy – each stroke being applied with intent and assertion.From tumblers to salad bowls, each simple, silhouetted piece in Michael glassware range possesses an understated elegance. The clean lines of their form are interrupted only by the beautifully scribed lines which add unique texture and rhythm to each piece. JACQUELINE LEIGHTON BOYCE With a BA and MA in Ceramic Design from Central St Martins, Jacqueline Leighton Boyce creates handmade earthenware ceramics, which she decorates with motifs inspired by nature such as birds and flowers. Based in Devon, she draws her inspiration from the surrounding landscape and her pieces are imbued with an appealing rawness. There is a folkloric element to her recent work for The New Craftsmen, which features doves, swifts, dandelions and stags. 38 39

OTIS INGRAM Otis Ingrams is a leather designer who started his brand OTZI Studios in 2013 producing wallets, aprons and utility goods from British sourced leather. LEATHER LOG BASKET Born in London, Otis Ingrams undertook an apprenticeship with Bill Amberg Otis Ingrams studio after graduating from San Francisco State University. EYELET BIN (BUTT / BAR STITCH) Otis Ingrams Eyelet Bin (Butt Stitch, image on the left and Bar Stitch, image on the right) by Material: Italian vegetable tanned leather-worker, Otis Ingram, strikes a modern silhouette drawing inspiration from buttero leather, waxed linen thread mid-century forms, in particular the Bauhaus modernism of The Carl Aubock and solid brass Workshop in Vienna during the postwar era. HILARY BURNS Hilary Burns is a Devon-based basketmaker who grows, harvests, soaks and bends her own willow to create functional pieces and decorative baskets. Weaving has been a constant in her life, originally she trained as a fabric weaver before taking up the craft of basketry 30 years ago. In 1985, she planted several willow beds to grow her own sustainable materials, such as hazel, oak and ash. Her work is based on traditional techniques applied in a contemporary way to achieve a robust and natural look. 54 55

CHARLOTTE MCLEISH East London-based ceramicist Charlotte McLeish makes elegant stoneware vases and vessels. Drawing inspiration from ancient Greek and Egyptian ceramics, her pieces offer a pure and refined take on a traditional style. Having grown up in a family of jewellers, she has always been fascinated with hand- made processes and went on to study Ceramic Design at Central St Martins. Charlotte combines five different clays and uses only two dry glazes, resulting in her pieces having strong visual unity. 66 67
