Colonial Carriage & Driving Society Presents the 22nd annual ORLETON FARM Combined Test, Driving Trial and Pleasure Driving Show THURSDAY, Friday, Saturday & Sunday august 12, 13, 14 and 15, 2021
Dear Exhibitors and Friends, Welcome to Colonial Carriage & Driving Society’s 22nd Annual Pleasure Driving Show. Colonial Carriage & Driving Society and Orleton Farm are proud to play a part in promoting the history and tradition of pleasure driving here in the Berkshire Hills. The Berkshires had great history in the gilded age with the large estates and wonderful carriage houses as the place to come and be seen driving your horse and carriage. Harvey and Mary make their home at Orleton Farm, which has been in Mary’s family since 1900 and has always been a horse facility. The grounds have become home to Colonial Carriage for it’s many events held here throughout the year: sleigh rallies, clinics, fun day, club meetings, and the pleasure show. The show started 23 years ago at famous sculptor Daniel Chester French’s home, Chesterwood, in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. The show continued there for three years, with the number of exhibitors and spectators increasing each year. The need for more space prompted the show to move to Eden Hill, one of Stockbridge’s great estates. in 2006, with the desire to add more classes, the show expanded to a two-day show and moved to Orleton Farm. A third day was added in 2011, expanding the show with more classes and divisions for our exhibitors. The Orleton Farm Pleasure Driving Show, Combined Test and Driving Trial is a unique event. In 2016 the show expanded to a four-day event to further accommodate the increasing interest in this venue. We continue that format in 2021. There are classes and divisions for everyone. The first day offers the Combined Test for VSEs, ponies and horses with Dressage and Cone classes. On Friday morning, the Pleasure Show kicks off with Turnout classes and Timed Cones for all divisions, followed by the Driving Trial Marathon in the after- noon. The three-day pleasure driving show 2021 schedule will continue to offer the Utility Vehicle Division, a Park Division, and a Picnic Class along with a popular American Heritage class and the Ride and Drive class. We also offer a Tandem Division and Unicorn/Four-in-Hand Division and continue with a Coaching Division added in 2019. The Maiden Horse/ Pony Division and the Trade and Commercial Vehicle Classes will also be offered. On Sunday, the gathering of Vintage Automobiles will also be on display. Our stabling opens at noon Tuesday, August 10, for those who want to come early. Exhibitors are invited to the Pizza Party Wednesday evening followed by the Exhibitor’s Briefing for the Combined Test and Driving Trial, starting on Thursday. Burgers and light fare will be available Thursday and Friday evening at 6:00 PM with beer and wine provided by Orleton Farm. These evenings will include presentation of the Combined Test and Driving Trial awards. Thursday night will include a briefing for Friday’s Driving Trial Marathon, while the briefing for Pleasure Show classes will take place on Friday night. Saturday night features a chicken BBQ open to exhibitors, family, and friends. Please purchase tickets with your entry. As our show continues to grow, we are dedicated to make your experience the best possible in these COVID times, with safety and fun in mind! The entire show staff joins our excitement, after an extremely difficult year, in providing the return to competition we have missed. This year, we are following the COVID guidelines of the American Driving Society as well as state and local government. As the year moves forward, we hope these guidelines will be eased by the implementation of vaccination programs. The ADS makes periodic changes to their COVID action plan. Please familiarize yourself with this document available on the ADS website. If you have any questions, please contact us. The show relies on the friendly volunteers from Colonial Carriage. They are committed to making your show experience the best possible – without them, the show would not go on. You can identify our volunteers from their club shirts. They can help with any questions you may have about the show or Colonial Carriage. We also take this opportunity to thank all competitors for participating, sponsors, and advertisers for their support, and all spectators for coming. The multi-day show schedule comes with certain financial risk for Colonial Carriage. Entry fees and other showing fees alone do not cover the cost of the running the show. Emerging from this pandemic puts an even larger burden on finances. Please consider being a sponsor or program advertiser as you fill out your entry form or consider visiting the show. With your participation and financial support, the show will continue to grow and enhance your showing experience in the future. We urge you to make your motel reservations early as there are other events in town during our show dates. We look forward to your continued support and to seeing you in August! COLONIAL CARRIAGE & DRIVING SOCIETY WELCOMES YOU AND INVITES YOUR SUPPORT We hope your journey to the 22nd Orleton Farm Pleasure Driving Show will be a pleasant one and that you and your friends will enjoy the weekend filled with diverse driving classes and social events. You will begin to experience the history and tradition of carriage driving in the Berkshires. As you drive up Prospect Hill from the Red Lion inn, which was a coaching inn and tavern established c. 1873, you will pass several of the former summer “cottages” of the late 19th century – including Bonnie Brae (now the Shrine of the Divine Mercy), Naumkeag (a Choate family residence), Oronoque – and you will shortly arrive at your destination: Orleton Farm. Upon passing through the entrance of the Farm, you will marvel at the beautiful grounds and pageantry of the horse show and surrounding activities. We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for sharing your enthusiasm for preserving the tradition of pleasure carriage driving by attending the show. This is the third year of a four day show at Orleton Farm. Colonial Carriage has expanded the format at considerable financial risk. The members know how much you will enjoy the show and encourage you to help the club meet their expenses with your generous support. All contributors will be listed in the show program if received prior to July 15, 2021. Levels of support with their benefits for you and your guests: ❏ $50 Class Sponsor.
