 Community meeting 18 September 2019

Coordination Change

Barbara Früh (DWD) handed over the coordination of the community to Christian Steger
(DWD) who was elected as coordinator by the SAB.

Status of the Science plan
Christian presented the current status of the science plan. There were no questions.

ICON-CLM

 ● Christian presented the concept for source code management. A detailed document
 will be prepared. A source code administration (SCA) group is in progress to be
 formed.
 ● ICON license: there are currently two possibilities to get a license (institutional license
 or personal license). The coordination is currently in contact with MPI-M to get a
 personal license for all community members without further application.
 ● No questions.

 ● ICCARUS 2-6 March 2020
 ● ICON-LAM/ICON-CLM training course 30 March – 3 April 2020
 ● Presentation of Ingo Kirchner for a possible location of the Assembly 2020 at the Free
 University Berlin, Germany (in September / October)

 ● There was no meeting, as there are currently only three active people in this group
 from which only Andreas Will was present. The position of the deputy is vacant,
 applications are welcome.
 ● Question Klaus: Will the implementation of the high order scheme be available in
 COSMO6.0 for COPAT2? For this, it is needed at the end of the year. Andreas:
 Hopefully; it is now the highest priority.

 ● Position of deputy is vacant, applications are welcome.

WG EVAL + combined ICON/EVAL meeting
(presented by Ivonne Anders)

 ● Positions of coordinator and deputy are vacant, applications are welcome.
 ● More volunteers are needed for participation in the coordinated evaluation of
 COSMO6.0 and ICON-CLM (COPAT2).
 ● Question: Is the COSMO tool „fieldextra“ part of WG EVAL? Answer: not yet.
 Information: it is designed for operational NWP purposes with many options. But
 possibly it is much work to set it up in a different way. Information: in the past, the
 CLM-Community decided against fieldextra, but this may be revised.
 possible task for next EVAL meeting
 ● Question: is it planned to use the FREVA tool of MiKliP? Answer: this will be
 investigated at HZG with a new colleague. Plan: combine FREVA and EvaSuite of
 HZG. FREVA is also used at DWD.
 ● Question: which tool is used at the training course? Answer: it has been ETOOL in
 earlier times; for 2020 no tool will be used, as we only have one day; it can be
 discussed again for the preparation of the course in 2021.

WG CP

 ● People are invited to join the group on the investigation of the CORDEX CORE data.
 ● Addition: it is important that the simulation protocol for regional simulations with
 CMIP6 forcing is distributed by EURO-CORDEX as soon as possible; other it is not
 clear how the setup for the simulations should look like -> Silje will try to clarify this
 (also necessary for PRINCIPLES project)
 ● Addition: wish for better decision strategy of which GCM use to downscale
 ● Question: it would be good to think about the model version for CMIP6 downscaling.
 Can we start shortly with the evaluation runs? We need soon the protocol. Answer:
 there was a short discussion, but timing is still unclear. In PRINCIPLES: if
 downscaling CMIP6 will be done, then it will be with the same version as for CMIP5
 and the same protocol. At the ETH, it is not decided yet.
 ● Question: Why are the CORDEX plans not clear yet? Answer: we know that the
 discussions have been started, but not sure if they had been finalized.

PG ICON + combined ICON/EVAL meeting

 ● Volunteers for participation in the necessary developments of ICON-CLM before the
 start of COPAT2 are invited.
 ● Comment on the naming: We already have the COSMO-CLM + CCLM, ICON-CLM +
 ICLM. We should use only one official name. Should be discussed. Answer: it was
 already voted to use ICLM, but in practice it is difficult; needs to be discussed +
 voted. Before publication of the reference paper! Will be added to the task list.

Not all members could be there, all except GUF sent a deputy.

WG AIO and WG CCAR
were cancelled due to too many absent members.
