A Message From the Principal I think it is fair to say that 2020 has been a ‘different’ year for the entire world. Never before have we experienced such restriction on our daily lives, impacting everything from being able to travel, work, socialise and even attend school. No one could have predicted the unprecedented experiences that have been brought about by the COVID-19 global pandemic. It has certainly presented a unique set of challenges for us as a school, and particularly for our Year 12 students. For our Year 12s, the disruption to the school year has been a rollercoaster ride. With the brief shift to learning from home at the end of term one, many felt the loss of social contact and comradery with classmates that often ‘glues’ the team together. Seemingly constant changes as our education system responded to the government’s health advice affected everything; attendance, courses, assessments, workplace learning access, excursions and camps (including Country Week), and created much uncertainty about next steps into university, TAFE and employment. There is no question it has been a testing time for you all. Thankfully, semester two has seen us get back on track with most things, so while the COVID-19 crisis is far from over, we have returned to a level of daily life that, while not quite ‘normal’, is not far off. Looking back on the crazy uncertainty of 2020 makes me appreciate the idea that ‘every cloud has a silver lining’. Fundamentally, this means even when things are ‘bad’, there are always ‘upsides’ that maybe we don’t expect. No challenge is without opportunity. There is also a saying that ‘Whatever doesn’t kill you makes you stronger’. You might not realise it yet, but the many curve balls that COVID-19 has thrown you this year have taught you lessons that will serve you well throughout your lives. Among the most important things that I hope you have learned is that you are adaptable. For a generation of young people who are predicted to typically have up to 17 different jobs across 5 totally different career pathways, this is a pretty handy skill! Being able to see the ‘upside’ in a challenging situation, to embrace opportunities and make the best of what life throws at you will be an important factor in your success as you move beyond school and into the wider world. The only things in life that are certain are death, taxes and constant change! Being flexible and able to adapt to changing circumstances will be the trademark of all successful people in future, so hold onto this lesson. Another lesson arising from the COVID-19 crisis that I hope you value moving forward is that you are strong, capable and resilient. While circumstances may have made things hard in 2020, as young people about to launch into adult life, you have learned to weather the storm. You have hung in there when things were at their worst, and have found your way back to solid ground. As a cohort of Year 12s, you have held hands and stuck together. Life will see you navigate many different storms, some more wearing than others. Be confident that everything you need to get through and emerge on the other side is already in each and every one of you. You are stronger than you know and more capable than you imagine. Believe in your ability to cope, to change direction, to learn and to grow. The final lesson that I hope 2020 has taught you – indeed all of us – is to not take things for granted. We live in a country where we enjoy freedom of speech, the freedom to travel, the protection of law to keep us safe, access to quality education and health services and social values that acknowledge the individuality of all people. It is not until these things are taken away, restricted or compromised that we realise how lucky we are to live in this context. I hope the lesson that COVID-19 has taught you in impacting some of these freedoms is to be grateful for our version of ‘normal’ life. We have had to give up some liberties temporarily; many people in the world will never experience having them. Keeping sight of this ‘big picture’ will help you to maintain perspective and may make the hurdles you will inevitably face seem a little lower and perhaps not so daunting. I also hope it will make you consciously appreciate your place in the world and remind you to be compassionate to others who do not enjoy the same quality of life. We indeed live in the ‘lucky country’, and right now, Western Australia is possibly the luckiest part of it. When you reflect on your Year 12 experiences, you will no doubt remember all the issues, challenges and inconvenience that COVID-19 caused. I would like to think that you will also be mindful of and grateful for the lessons it has helped you to learn. These are the ‘upsides’, the ‘silver linings’ and they are unique. I have no doubt that each of you in your own way, will be ‘stronger’ for having been Year 12s in 2020. I am certain that you will step confidently into your next phase of life, ‘front-loaded’ with the skills, understandings and attributes that will lead to your success. You take with you the legacy of having been a part of a great school community, which I hope you will revisit next year for the Pinjarra Senior High School Centenary celebrations. My very best wishes to you all for your future endeavours, wherever the adventure takes you. Jan Stone Principal 1
Associate Principal's Message As you look back on your schooling, 2020 will stand out as a year to remember. This is not just because it was your final year of school and the gateway to your FREEDOM but also because this final year has such historical significance. The Coronavirus led to significant upset and change in the educational setting. Fortunately for us all, WA was one state that managed the pandemic well and we were back to near ‘normal’ sooner than most. Nevertheless, this virus put extra pressure on all of you, and on your teachers, a pressure which you all seemed to take in your stride. The fact that you continued with your learning and maintained sight of your goals is testament to your maturity and your resilience. First the School Ball was cancelled, then Country Week, then graduation looked to be in peril. Then the School Ball was back, albeit in a different venue, and Graduation was back, albeit in a different venue and Country Week? Well, at least you all got to go last year! It has been a pleasure to be associated with this Year 12 group as your Associate Principal. I feel I know you all well – and I do – but as your teacher and as the English HOLA rather than as the ‘Deputy’. What this has reinforced to me though is the importance of building relationships with the people in our lives – not just our family and friends but with our peers and colleagues. Taking on the role of Associate Principal would have been infinitely more challenging had we not known each other. Having that connection, that relationship founded on mutual respect and understanding, allowed me to tell you off when I needed to, to remind you of your responsibilities, to hold you accountable for your mistakes, to work with you to overcome your challenges and to continue to make silly jokes that you pretended to laugh at even though you thought they were quite lame. I would like to leave you with a final message. A final quote by Aeschylus. It’s the one I think about when life gets really hard. When things get tough, my mum always tells me that ‘this too shall pass’, but this quote reminds me that there is a positive outcome to the pain. ‘He who learns must suffer. And even in our sleep, pain - that cannot forget - falls drop by drop upon the heart, and in our own despair, against our will, comes wisdom …’ So, the bad news is that in your future there will be times of pain – physical and emotional – but that from this you can learn and become wise. Old too … but wise Caroline Green Associate Principal 2
Student Services Manager 2020 Review As the Graduating Class of 2020 I absolutely appreciate that the Pandemic has made life challenging and has resulted in a few missed opportunities. During our chats I have heard the statement “Why did this have to happen to us”. My daughters have a day a word a day calendar. Each day they get up flip over the calendar and it gives them a word to add to their vocabulary along with a definition and a few sentences to put it into context. Flipping the calendar for today it gave me the word that I want to offer you as my piece of advice to look back on your graduating year 2020. PERSPECTIVE Meaning - “a particular attitude towards or way of regarding something; a point of view.” Used in a sentence: “When you look at the painting, you are viewing the artist’s perspective of the world.” So my question to you is what perspective do you choose to view your time at school culminating with 2020? In terms of 2020 a perspective that one could take is one of pandemic stress, doom and gloom, social injustice, race riots, missed opportunities, crippling bush fires and so on. All these things have had a significant impact on the year but should they define YOUR year? What if we put a positive spin on the year? (Glass half full if you will). Let's take a look from a different perspective…… This year has taught me that the human spirit can triumph. Driving down local streets with rainbows, teddy bears and inspirational messages in windows. People going to the shops during lockdown to buy supplies for their elderly neighbours, not to mention the amazing and selfless effort of our doctors, nurses and yes even teachers to keep things running as smoothly as possible despite the risks. Even home schooling and isolation restrictions for many families has had the opportunity to bring them closer together by spending quality time together. Earlier in the year Australia and people from around the world came together to raise millions for the bushfire relief. There were clips of people rescuing car loads of koalas and starting pop up animal shelters, as well as complete strangers stopping to help protect people and their belongings from the fires. The most recent and powerful opportunity that we have is to be part of the global social justice change via the Black Lives Matters movement. These are just moments in a lifetime…. YOUR lifetime that you will look back on. Has this time been one of overwhelming challenge or amazing opportunity? When enough time has passed some of you will view highschool as one of best times of your lives while others will view it from a different perspective. Which one are you? From the Senior School Coordinator To the Year 12 class of 2020 2020 has certainly been the year! Words such as social distancing, sanitiser, lockdown, pandemic, postponed, cancelled, on-line learning, hibernation and Webex have been the normal and a ‘new normal’ is what we have lived through. Your Year 12 Pastoral Care group had ‘A Sense of Humour’ as its focus – we could not have needed it more. The concept that growth comes in many forms and is rarely what you expect is certainly true for 2020. Say ‘yes’ to opportunities - take every positive that is offered to you to make you stand out from the crowd, to grow, to experience and to take yourself out of your comfort zone. Create the opportunity to dazzle. Be confident enough in yourselves ... to be silly! Earlier this year, a Year 12 showed me this (on her phone that wasn’t on or out at school), as it resonated with her. I hope that it is also a way for you to appreciate that 2020, although not what any of us anticipated, can still be …. an inspiring year, the year you could make a difference. What if 2020 isn’t cancelled? What if 2020 is the year we’ve been waiting for? A year so uncomfortable, so painful, so scary, so raw – that it finally forces us to grow. A year that screams so loud, finally awakening us from our ignorant slumber. A year we finally accept the need for change. Declare change. Work for change. Become the change. A year we finally band together, instead of pushing each other further apart. 2020 isn’t cancelled, but rather the most important year of them all. -Leslie Dwight You have had many people leading your group. One hundred and twelve started in Year 7 with Ms Dale (Term 1) and then Mr Coates through to Year 9. Ms Mason worked with you in Year 10 where Mr Teakle was in Student Services and Mr Sinagra was your Associate Principal. In Senior School, Ms Walters was your Year 11 Coordinator and in your final year, seventy-five of you remain, with Ms Green as your Associate Principal, Mr Pittman as your Year Coordinator and Mrs Gray (yep, me) as your Senior School Coordinator. Your Principals have been Mr Hunt, Mr Lawson and Ms Stone and we have not even mentioned your teachers and the rest of the staff that have been your support network. That is a huge team that have wanted to be there for you. It has definitely been a year to remember ... most of my moments begin with "Mrs Gray do you have a minute?" Most of your moments have been part of a waiting game to see if they would even happen! The School Magazine that I received in Year 8 at PSHS had the Editor’s note, “VISTA – is the 1979 Pinjarra Senior High School Magazine – in Latin ‘Vista’ means ‘expanding horizons’ or ‘endless view’ but to those of us at Pinjarra – the name also represents our five house groups: Vikings, Incas, Spartans, Trojans and Aztecs.’’ As you leave and the school moves into 2021, our 100th year, you are the last group to dress and chant at the Athletics Carnival for these houses. 2021 will see a new house system that is ‘more us’ and that we hope represents our school for another 100 years! Every choice you make, makes you. I was privileged to be involved. At the beginning of the year I said, ''Sometimes we are all too quick to count down the days; that we forget to make the days’ count'' – make every day and moment an amazing memory! May you all find your true, full potential. Live with honesty, courage, wisdom, compassion, empathy, tolerance and acceptance. You are capable of amazing things. My very best wishes for your lives out of school. Work hard, wear sunscreen, make good choices and stay safe! Be True to yourselves and stride forward with pride! Go on … just get out there. The new journey begins. Mrs Gray Senior School Coordinator 4
Chappo’s Contemplations Yr 12’s of 2020 WHAT A WEIRD YEAR!! Not your year group personally, I’m referring to this interrupted year of COVID-19. I’m so sorry it’s messed up some of the things you were looking forward to like Countryweek, but hopefully it has blessed you in others ways such as getting time to slow down and to grow better family relationships!! And despite all the disruption I hope you’re proud YOU HAVE MADE IT! Twelve plus years of schooling that hopefully leaves you with a heap of good memories and at least a small amount of education!! I remember meeting many of you when I first visited your primary schools for transition, cute and wide-eyed at the prospect of high school. That may not have lasted long, but I can honestly say it’s been an absolute pleasure sharing the journey with you and I want to thank you for letting me be a part of it! At transition I reassured you that you wouldn’t get your head flushed down the toilet… hopefully that didn’t happen did it?... and also said there would be lots of great times ahead. First there was Year 7 camp which was full of laughs and good friendship building time, and at least now you can answer questions like ‘is that flying fox really safe?’ and ‘does the slippery tarp really give you an uncomfortable rash when you slide onto the grass?’! You’ve then enjoyed Sports and swimming carnivals, excursions, 40 Hour Famine sleepovers, Peel Carnivals, Countryweek 2019… where I’ve loved having the chance to know you better and been proud to see you grow and perform. I also find it amazing that just under half of your year group have at one time or other sought my support through difficult times, and I want to say thank you for trusting me! I encourage you to continue growing your support networks to help deal with the tough times that will undoubtedly come at certain points in your life. Along the way I hope you’ve got the message you ARE precious! You are unique and you are gifted!, and although some people may say the school years are the best years of your life, I DISAGREE! Yes there have hopefully been some great times, but I reckon life only gets better and better from here on in!! So enjoy the ride, follow your passions not your pocket and look for what you can do for others and the community, not just yourself. Please do come back sometime and say hello - I love hearing what ex-students are up to, and I’m always willing to lend an ear if you find you need support with something. Of course, if you come bringing KFC, well then, you’ll be extra welcome… Take care leaving class of 2020 and I pray you find your passion and purpose! Justin Hill aka. Chappo :) 5

Student Leaders Being part of the Student Leadership team has allowed us to develop valuable leadership skills. We had the chance to become more confident, cooperative and learn what it means to be the best possible Student Leaders we can. We had great opportunities, including running assemblies, helping at the 2019 Year 12 Presentation Evening, and organising a bake sale. Also holding a guess the amount of lollies in the jar competition for R U OK? Day in 2019 where we raised over $500 for a local men’s Mental Health Program. We also had the opportunity to go on a Leadership Camp at Nanga Bush Camp, where we took part in a variety of activities that focused on improving our leadership skills and critical thinking. We even got to meet and have a discussion with the Shire of Murray members about community ideas and have a say in improvements for our school. These were just a few things we got to do as a team but being able to experience them led to very memorable moments. Our opportunities were cut short due to a tough year everyone has had with COVID-19, but for what we did get to participate in we thoroughly enjoyed it. 38

Into the Enchanted On the 22nd of August the class of 2020 put on their dresses and adorned their suits in preparation for the night to come. Everyone arrived in their fancy cars and limos and looked stunning as they climbed the stairs of the Port Bouvard Surf Club that led to the beautifully decorated venue. The night Forest consisted of dancing to music played by the DJ, good food and lots of turns in the photo booth that left us with memories of the night that we can look back on in the years to come. At the end of the night a slow dance was put on and the boys led their partners to the dance floor to dance one final dance before the awards were presented. The awards consisted of Year 12 Ball Belle of the ball (Isobelle Edwards), Beau of the ball (Daryl Lasanas), best dressed (Torin O’Brian), best hair (Clay Philpott) and Cutest couple (Tucker Westworth and Breanna Hamilton) and the winners were well deserving of their awards. It was a night full of laughter, dancing and friends and is sure to be a night we will remember for the rest of our lives. Saturday, August 22 Port Bouvard Surf Club 52

The 2020 Year 11 and 12 Outdoor Rec Camp in Margaret River (9-11 September) proved to be memorable one as we immersed ourselves in the natural beauty of WA’s South West. Over the 3 days, there were a lot of scenic views, some tough walks and plenty of good conversations. Thursday’s surfing saw the surf school guys stoked to see the Pinjarra students (and teachers) charging hard. Students were independent and cooperative as they cooked, setup, helped each other and took on all challenges placed in front of them. Above all, they were darn good company and made the jobs of the teachers in attendance very enjoyable. Margaret River OUTDOOR REC CAMP 2019 & 2020 58
