KEYNOTE SPEAKERS Stephen Rowan, Vice-President of the EPO Directorate-General Patent Granting Process Stephen joined the European Patent Office as Vice-President on 1st January 2019. He is responsible for the entire Patent Granting Process at the EPO and has the lead for the largest Directorate General with more than 5,000 staff. He is also Site Manager for the EPO branch in The Hague. Before joining the EPO, he held a number of senior leadership roles in the UKIPO. These included the position of Director of Registered Rights, responsible for the end to end processing of patent, trade mark and design applications and the associated tribunal functions. He has an LLB (Hons) from the University of the West of England. Tim Moss CBE, CEO of the Intellectual Property Office Tim took up post as Chief Executive Officer and Comptroller General of the UKIPO on 1 May 2017. As CEO of the UKIPO he is responsible for advising Ministers on all IP policy matters and for the operation of the Office, which grants some 6325 patents, 63312 national trade marks and 20137 Designs each year. He came to the IPO from Companies House where he was the Registrar of Companies for England and Wales and Chief Executive (March 2012- April 2017). Tim’s career also includes 12 years in senior operational roles in the manufacturing industry. He has a Natural Sciences degree from Cambridge University, an MBA from Swansea University and lives on a farm in South Wales with his wife and two children. He was awarded a CBE in the 2016 Queen’s Birthday Honours list for services to the economy and the people of Swansea. Amanda Michaels, Hogarth Chambers Amanda is especially well-known as a trade mark specialist, dealing with trade mark and passing off matters at all levels, in UK and Community Courts. She has a wealth of experience in a broad field of practice, ranging from trade marks and passing off, copyright and designs, breach of confidence and related commercial disputes in the media and entertainment field, to broader contractual and Chancery disputes. She has acted for multinational brand and copyright owners, film, TV and record companies and collecting societies, as well as for SMEs and individuals in disputes in the music/record industry, films, advertising, television and publishing. Amanda is the author with Andrew Norris of ‘A Practical Guide to Trade Mark Law.’ The 5th edition of this popular textbook was published by OUP in March 2014. Amanda is an experienced mediator of IP, Chancery and wider commercial disputes; she has a high rate of successful outcomes. Lee Davies, CIPA Chief Executive COMPÈRE Lee Davies is the Chief Executive of the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys (CIPA), a role he took up in February 2012. Prior to this, Lee held the position of Deputy Chief Executive of the Institute for Learning (IfL), where he was instrumental in reforming and refocusing professional identity in the further education sector. Lee is a passionate advocate for the association sector and is Vice-President and Chair of the Institute of Association Management (IAM), where he leads the Chief Executives’ Forum. Lee’s professional background is in engineering (mechanical services) and further education teaching. Lee has experience of the governance of professional bodies, having served as the President of the Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering (CIPHE) in 2011-12. CIPA OFFICERS Julia Florence, CIPA President Julia is the current President of CIPA and,until her recent retirement, was a senior patent attorney at GlaxoSmithKline. She has extensive experience of building, managing and defending IP portfolios for pharmaceutical products at all stages of development and commercialisation. More recently she has been involved in European IP policy issues. Prior to joining GSK in 2001, Julia worked for several years at Kilburn & Strode, as well as in the former Glaxo, Wellcome and SmithKline Beecham. She has a keen interest in education and training and served as an examiner for the European patent exams for several years. She served an initial 3-year term on CIPA Council in the late 90s. She returned to Council in 2015 and has been a member of the Patent and Life Science Committees. Richard Mair, CIPA Vice President Richard is the current Vice President of CIPA and will become President in January 2020, having served on CIPA’s Council since 2015. He has been a member of CIPA’s International Liaison Committee since its formation in 1996 and was appointed its Chairman in 2015. Richard has led or been a member of CIPA delegations and has presented papers all over the world. He has over 40 years’ experience as a European and UK Patent and Trade Mark Attorney. In 1988 he joined Abel & Imray as a Partner and, after leaving the Partnership 27 years later, continued as a Consultant to the firm. He has also served as Vice-Chairman of CIPA’s Trade Mark Committee; representing CIPA on the UK Trade Marks Registry Practice Working Group, on the UKIPO Marks and Designs Forum and at British Days at 3 WIPO on Trade Marks and Designs. Nicholas Fox, Finnegan SPEAK Nicholas Fox practices intellectual property law with a focus on electronics, telecoms and software patent litigation. In addition to being qualified as a solicitor, he is also qualified as a European and Chartered British patent attorney, with full rights of audience to appear in intellectual property proceedings at all levels in the English High Court. He is also qualified and admitted as an attorney in New York. Nicholas is the author of the practitioners work “A Guide to the EPC 2000” and is the consulting editor and author of the UK intellectual property, European patents and European enforcement chapters of the book “Intellectual Property in Electronics and Software” published by Globe Law and Business. Ingo Beckedorf, EPO Ingo Beckedorf, Dr. iur., M.L.E., is the legally qualified Chairman of Technical Board of Appeal 3.2.07 (Mechanics) and a regular member of the Enlarged Board of Appeal of the European Patent Office. In the latter he was rapporteur in decisions G2/12 and G2/13 (Tomatoes II and Broccoli II) and G1/16 (Disclaimers III) and member i.a. of the panels deciding G3/14 (Clarity), G1/15 (Partial Priority) and G1/18 (Filing of an Appeal). Before joining the Boards of Appeal in 2007, he was a judge at the Han- seatic Higher Regional Court Hamburg (GER), legal counsel to the Court’s President in court man- agement matters and legal counsel to the Constitutional Court of Hamburg. He also held a position outside the judiciary as attaché de presse and deputy head of the Office of the European Parliament in Germany. Gwilym Roberts, Kilburn & Strode / CIPA Honorary Secretary Heavily involved in CIPA’s Patents Committee, Gwilym is closely involved in responding to patent office consultations especially in the area of future changes and improvements to the system. In his professional life he advises clients on all aspects of the patent process including IP audit and capture, IP filing strategies and patent portfolio management techniques. He acts for a range of clients including individuals, SMEs, Universities and spin outs through to multi-nationals and handles a broad and diverse range of cases before the UK Patent Office, EPO and WIPO. He is a visiting Professor at QMUL, President of the British Group of UNION, Chairman of Kilburn & Strode LLP and a Council Member of CIPA Greg Corcoran, ASML Corporate Intellectual Property Greg Corcoran is a chartered and European patent attorney at ASML. ASML is a global supplier of silicon chip fabrication equipment which is based in the Netherlands. Greg’s practice covers the full lifecycle of a patent from invention identification and patent drafting through to risk assessment and litigation support. He is a member of CIPA’s Congress Committee. Anita Shaw, IBM Anita Shaw is a dual qualified European and UK Patent Attorney at IBM. Having first trained in general sciences and then tech, she has wide-ranging experience in protecting and harvesting IP as well as monetising IP through deals, collaborations and licensing. Anita is involved in a number of external initiatives in the broader European & UK IP & Legal professions: Policy work around copyright and patents, EPI: Examiner for European Qualifying Examinations, Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys (CIPA): South and South coast Regional Representative, IP Inclusive: Founding Member of IP&ME (a diversity network for BAME employees and their allies). James Porter, IPO James Porter is a Deputy Director at the Intellectual Property Office and a hearing officer in relation to patents matters. As head of the Patents Legal Section, he is responsible for matters concerning UK patents legislation and practice. He also has some wider responsibilities for IP legislative change and he led the Parliamentary Bill teams who delivered the IP Act 2014 and the IP (Unjustified Threats) Act 2017. His most recent legislative work has been on aspects of IP law affected by EU Exit. He joined the Office as a patent examiner, following a PhD in condensed matter 4 physics. AKERS Sophie Maughan, Cleveland Scott York Sophie has over fifteen years’ experience advising clients on IP matters. She is qualified as both a Patent Attorney and a Trade Mark Attorney, and advises clients on all aspects of IP protection and enforcement relating to patents, trade marks and designs. She is described by The Legal 500 2013 as “proactive and professional”. In relation to patents, Sophie works with clients in the chemical and life sciences fields. She has particular experience in working with clients in the medical field, in areas such as orthopaedic implants, medical devices, pharmaceuticals and laboratory research equipment. Sophie has gained extensive experience dealing with issues relating to methods of treatment and diagnosis before the European Patent Office. Sophie works with multinational companies, SMEs and universities on matters such as patent drafting, prosecution and infringement. Alasdair Poore, Mills & Reeve / CIPA Council Alasdair is Head of the Intellectual Property Team at Mills & Reeve LLP, advising on protection of intellectual property and technology contracting especially in the IT and public procurement sectors. He is a past President of the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys and Editor of the CIPA Journal. Alasdair has a mixed Natural Sciences and Law degree, following which he qualified as a barrister, before joining Shell’s Patents and Licensing Department, working in London and Canada prior to moving into practice as a lawyer and patent attorney. Alasdair is also Deputy Chair of the Litigation Committee of CIPA and member of CIPA’s Trade Marks and Patents Committees Gordon Harris, Gowling WLG Gordon Harris is Global Co-Head of IP at Gowling WLG. He has specialised in IP enforcement for over 30 years, originally working across the full range of IP rights but for many years now specialising in patent litigation. Gordon conducts litigation in all UK and European Courts for clients seeking to protect their IP or who have been accused of infringing other people’s rights. His highest profile win was in the Supreme Court in Virgin v Zodiac. He is on the Committee of the Intellectual Property Lawyers’ Association and has worked in that capacity to inform the government in respect of aspects of the proposed Unified Patents Court and Brexit. Stephen Jones, CIPA Immediate Past President Stephen is the Immediate Past President of CIPA and was formerly editor for 15 years of the CIPA Guide to the Patents Acts. He is a UK and European patent attorney and trade mark attorney. He is also an accredited mediator and a solicitor-advocate. During a career spanning nearly 40 years he has practised with major international law firms, with one of the leading UK patent attorney firms and in house at a major industrial company. He was most recently a partner and then consultant at Baker & McKenzie where he worked for 17 years. He is a visiting professor at the University of Law (formerly the College of Law), a visiting lecturer at University College London and tutor on the IP Diploma Course of the University of Oxford. He is also a Council Member of AIPPI UK. Stephen Lester, Flint Engineering A founding partner of Flint Engineering, Stephen has driven the company through 7 years of research relating to the flat heat mat. During this time, successful research and development projects funded by Government, the EU and private companies have seen the successful delivery of results in flat heat pipe technology, leading to applications which are now approaching commercialisation. The latest and most advanced of these is currently part of negotiations with The Chinese State Shipping Company to set up joint venture factory with a value of £5 million. All of these projects, both past and ongoing, have been brought in on time and budget. Prior to Flint, Stephen spent 30 years in IT as a project manager responsible for many multi- million pound projects in both the public and private sectors. Alexandra Seymour-Pierce, Venner Shipley Alexandra is a UK Chartered Patent Attorney and European Patent Attorney at Venner Shipley LLP. She joined the patent profession in 2014, following a PhD in Engineering Physics from University College London, during which she designed and tested sports equipment for use by Team GB athletes at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.
