As stated by the Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics, all credentialed nutrition and dietetics professionals, including RDNs and NDTRs, should have an NPI number regardless of work environment and payment status. It is required by law that all health care providers who are HIPAA-covered entities must obtain an NPI when transmitting electronic health information in connection with HIPAA standard transactions. An NPI must be obtained before enrolling as a Medicare provider or becoming credentialed with Medicaid or private payers. Learn more about the various types of NPIs and how you can apply for one at https://www.eatrightpro.org/payment/getting-started/becoming-a-provider/obtaining-an- npi-or-ein?_zs=gSuEa&_zl=LMk03.

PROPOSED BYLAWS AMENDMENT The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics is proposing a change to Article II Members, Section 7b: Associate Member Qualifications. The Associate Member category was originally adopted in 2011 and last updated by the House of Delegates in 2017. After discussion and thoughtful consideration, The Member and Student Advisory Committee (MSAC) has proposed an amendment to the Bylaws. The MSAC has proposed that the qualifications for Associate category membership be expanded to include individuals with degrees in public health and public policy. The purpose of the proposed amendment is to build collaboration and increase inclusion of non-dietitian, allied professionals who support food, nutrition, and dietetics professionals. Academy members have until March 26 to comment on the proposed Bylaws amendment. The proposed Bylaws can be found at https://www.eatrightpro.org/news-center/member- updates/events-and-deadlines/proposed-bylaws-amendment?_zs=gSuEa&_zl=uVRw2. Let the delegates know if you support the proposed changes by completing this survey https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/YNBSJPY. National Nutrition Month Morgan Harm Every March we celebrate National Nutrition Month as a way to promote nutrition education, informed food choices, and the importance of overall health. As dietitians, National Nutrition Month is also a way for us to advocate for our profession as the most valuable and credible sources of evidence-based food and nutrition information. Although we celebrate yearly, have you ever wondered why National Nutrition Month started? Keep reading to learn more about the history of National Nutrition Month! Before National Nutrition Month was a whole month, it started as National Nutrition Week in 1973. The theme was “Invest in Yourself–Buy Nutrition” and the week was launched with a presidential proclamation. It wasn’t until 1980 that National Nutrition Week expanded to National Nutrition Month. This was due in large part to the public’s growing interest in health and nutrition. Meanwhile, in 1977, the American Dietetic Association (ADA) introduced Nutribird–a bird with “a body shaped like a head of lettuce and a carrot beak.” Nutribird was utilized as a mascot for National Nutrition Week and appeared in TV announcements, radio broadcasts, and even song recordings to help promote good nutrition. Many dietitians and dietetic interns at the time wore Nutribird costumes to share nutrition education messages. Eventually, Nutritbird became obsolete in the 1980s as ADA ambassadors became spokespeople for National Nutrition Month and greater funding was obtained for different promotional materials. Throughout the 1980s the ADA continued to develop creative yearly themes and found new ways to promote National Nutrition Month with posters and table tents. These promotional materials even made their debut on national television when they were featured as school cafeteria props on the shows Head of the Class and Growing Pains. By the 90s, the ADA pivoted towards simplifying their themes choosing, “Eat Right America” as easy to understand with mass appeal. This eventually became the inspiration for the current Eat Right website today. With the rise in technology over the course of the late 90s and early 2000s, members of the ADA began to send out emails and newsletters with healthful tips during National Nutrition Month. 2009 marked the year where the ADA created a new organizational identity and the theme of “Eat Right” encouraged consumers to make informed choices. Over the past decade we have continued to see changes in nutrition messaging during National Nutrition Month as technology continues to evolve. Despite the many changes over the years, National Nutrition Month has been a continued success largely due to passionate RDNs, NDTRs, and dietetic interns alike. As National Nutrition Month continues to grow, I’m sure the goal of increasing the public’s awareness of the importance of good nutrition and highlighting dietitians as the authority in nutrition will remain the same. https://www.eatright.org/food/resources/national-nutrition-month/history-timeline https://www.eatright.org/~/media/eatright%20files/nationalnutritionmonth/nnmhistory_032006jada.ashx#:~: text=Over%20the%20years%2C%20National%20Nutrition,authorities%20in%20nutri%2D%20tion.%E2%80%9D
